Moore and MeNerhany, as members of the special committee referred to, stated that Mr. Divine had not testified in his own defence before the comunittee; he had been present at its sitting, aud was guestioned in reference to what disposi - ton bad been made of certain funds. Mr. Pearson said he did not desire to be misun- derstood; he had questioned Mr. Divine’s coudact as@ Commissioner, in connection with the other odicers of the market, but he disclaimed any sep- arate or personal action or expression against him. Garey, who introdaced the visitors in a few very pertinent remarks. S The President then responded, saying that it ‘was with great pleasure that he received them at the White House; paid a high compliment to fire- men in general, and especially to those of Wash- ington, remarking, among’ other things. that he never knew a better class of people than the resi- dent population of Washington Gen'l. Marertxp tn Haste.—This morning, a little before noon, a young man and woman inquired their way to the office of Justice Donn. where they were allowed the privilege of his conterence- room, and remained to await the arrival of Rev W. L. Childs, of St. Alban’s Church, for whom they sent. Upon the arrival of that clergyman, he proceeded to unite the young couple in the bands of holy wedlock, which was done in the presence of n wondering company. The name of the groom is Travers Scegar pre the bride Susan Woodward, both of Stafford county, Va. Ap rently, the groom is about twenty-one and the bride fifteen. Police Marrens.— Before Justice Clark —John Colbert was brought up on a charge of stealing a cap from David Fisher. Svsptvtsions —The City Surveyor and his as- sistant have been engaged lately with the work of sabdividiug certain squares and lots, before sub- divided, but in such a manger that now as the proeress of improvement brings those squares and ts into the market as available for building sites, the former subdivisions prove to be disad- vantayeous. In years past the subdivisions were frequently made to favor the erection of smail tenements. The demand for tirst class houses has reatly increased within the past ten years, and owners of real estate tind it profitable to change the subdivision of their property into lots suitable for such improvements. It is reported by those who have vis- ited the marshes, in the Potomac and Anacostia, that the birds are very plentiful, and many gun- ners have made e returns from single tides. The birds are be- ginning to be offered at the restaurants, hotels, and in the markets by the professional ‘unners, in large numbers; they find ready sale, being con- sidered a delicacy of the season. The amusing incidents connected with amateurs sporting in the marsh, as ducking, miring, &c., are as nu- merous as ever. but no serious accidents have yet been reported. Stevens, Pennsylvania avenue, near Ninth street, the at- traction being the crown and magic fan provided for the fortunate one who shall be selected as the Queen of Love and Beauty at the Tournament of the Sons of Malta on the 15th instant, and the beautifal wreaths for the Maids of Honor. ‘The crown is really super, composed of the finest French flowers, tastefully interspersed with sil- ver lilies of the valley. The magic fan is much admired. and especially beeanse of the het oad with which it is transformed from a beautiful fan to a boquet of equal beanty. ‘The blush rose wreaths, three in number, are tastefully designed These, too, are much admired. nek were all selected by Mr. Stevens, and do much credit to his taste. Tue Tueatee.—One of the largest and most fashionable audiences that has ever graced the in- terior of the Washington theatre, assembled last night to witness the performance of the great in- ternational comedy of “ Our American Cousin.” It was truly gratifying to the friends of the Drama, as it must have been to the company to know that so many people knew of the existence of the thea- tre. awd had actually found the way to that hospi- table establishment. Witbout having the space to enter into any criticism of the play or its perform- ance, we will simply say that it was most enthu- siastically received bv a very large and discrimi- nating audience, and will no doubt draw over- flowing houses as long as the managers = fit to keep it upon the Washington boards. The play is to be repeated to-night, followed by the farce of the Eton Boy—Mr. Raymond as Dabiter. Tur Revivat.—The protracted meetings at the Methodist churches are still in progress. At the Wesley Chapel, last night, a love feast was held ander the superintendence of the Rev. Dr. Mor- gan, Pres‘d Elder, and Rev. Mr. Ball. It was a very interesting occasion, and several penitents appeared at the altar for prayer. At the Methodist Church Sonth, interesting meetings are in progress under the direction of Rev.
