He entered the ring, neighing fearfully, soorting, and rushing sometimes at and som‘ rimes away from the Professor, Now he pawed ound with impatience, and then fun; br Sind hoof with a foree ‘which saggested to standers-by the expediency of k Dg @ ©: civil . His case was a perfect lesson, and was watched with intense interest. Mr. Rarey at first approached his intractable pupil sewly, gently, but without fear, leeturing 2s he went along, and explaining the course of geutleness’’ by means of which this ud spirit was soon to be brought to a state of sub- mission. [is left hand was on the strap, eped unobtrusively from his coat bis right—extended in a most eon- cilistory wanner—in readiness for the prelimi- nary caress. Cruiser the Second looked puz- dled. then frightened, reared as if he medi- isted 2 sudden visit to the reserved seats, and then stood perfectly motionless. The master’s eye was upon him, and his own quailed under the mesmeric influence. Ina very few seconds Mr. Rarey was at his shoulder, the strap was on his foreleg, and the lesson commenced. The struggle that followed was ly as exciting and extraordinary an exhibition as was ever witnessed in a public theatre. There was no sham, no stage trick, no spell, no phi!- tor, it wasa lar stand-up fight between che horse and the man, between strength di- rected by courage and intellect and mere brute force, having only its sheer bone and muscle todepend on. Sometimes the maddened ani- wal reared, and seomed as if about to crush the Professor, sometimes he sank 16 upen his crippled foreleg. and, with head strete! out, blew up columus of sawdust by the violent - respiration from the nostrils. Then he would make another desperate effort to rise, but only to be followed by another and more helpless prostration. He sweated, he panted, he quiv- ered, his skin rose and fell in wayes under the strong agony, and his haunches were marked with deep corugations as he repeated hie fran- attempts to break his, to him, mysterious bonds. But it was of no avail. The tamer ail through clung so close to him as to seem a part of himself. He never got excited, never -leseribing to the audience what he was doing, and why he did it. His grip and pressure was vs slow, regular, gradual, but as inexorable as fate. until, at last, the poor animal surrender- ed at discretion, stretched himself at his length apon the arena, and seemed to experience an jost temper, never missed an opportunity of exquisite sensation of relief as the reward of his entire aad ancenditional submission. The — now gradually ceased, the muscles all caine relaxed, and the limbs lay helpless in the Professor's handa, as he knocked the hoofs together or placed them successively on hisown head to show how perfect was his confidence in the subjection of the horse. After a few min- uses’ rest the straps were taken off and the pu- pil was allowed to rise, when it was curious to observe that at first he kept his fore legs con- tracted, under the impression that the terrible ligatures still remained in their places. When he bad completely recovered his Mr. Rarey mounted on his back, and rode him slowly out of the . amid loud and general applause — London Nowe: as SPECULATING IN A PAIR OF VASES. In a room at the Girard College, in Phila- deiphia, is kept a large portionof Mr. Girard’s antiquated wardrobe, which is shown to visit- ors, and is generally viewed with much inter- est. With this explanation, the followi: % ».’ from the Philadelphia Nor! American, alleged to be true, will be under- stood and sppreciated : “A athe since a party — beers Praord reees ns, male female, je their t visit to the city. They inspected the Mint, Fairmount Park, and other places, at once, devoting the last day of their stay ton leisurely tour through the Girard College. They first went over the grounds, and then saw the pupils, the school rooms, the dormito- ries and play-rooms. They then asked to be shown ‘ the room where Stephen's old clothing was kept.’ Their escort was a recently-en- gaged female domestic, rather fresh from the a who professed to know ‘ how to do any- thing. an’ a dale besides.’ Milesian female listened to the request to be shown ‘Stephen’s old clothing,’ and remarked that ‘nothing was aysier.’ She conducted the party to the fourth story of the building occupied by Professor Stevens. She brought scats for her guests. then spread before them several pair of ts, a deal the worse for wear, a num- r of vests in like condition, and two coatr, one with a claw-hammer tail, and the other a dress-coat that had been converted into a ‘bob.’ “The visitors handled the garments with t veneration, expressed themselves freely as to Friend Stephen’s taste in personal a) rel, commen upon the stitching of the tton holes, the cut of the unmentionables, and finally retired, greatly gratified at having ocularly examined < friend en's ward- robe.’ As they descended tho stairs the party passed the open door of a sleeping room, in which Mrs. Professor Stevens was taking a siesta. Mrs. Stevens saw one, two, three. and finally eight yovple coming down the stairs of her own private welling, and wondered what was meant by the intrusion. The servant girl, however, saw them to the door, recei ir thanks for her politeness in exhibiting Ste- [et wearing apparel, and then returned to er mistress. “Who were those people, Biddy?’ asked Mra. Stevene. ‘** Mighty mice people, indade, ma’am. They're afther lookin’ at Mr. Stevens’s ould clothes.’ “** Mr. Stevens's old clothes?’ “*Yis, ma’am; sure they axed to see ’em, and I tuk ‘em up into the garret and showed “em Mr. Stevens's ould breeches and the like o’ thim.’ “‘Mrs. Steyens saw how matters stood, and laughed until the tears came The worthy Friends, we doubt not, will do the same pak when they learn that the blundering Iris e instead of gratifying their desire to be- old the garments worn by Pig ph Girard, had treated them toa view of Professor Ste- vens's cast-off clothing. Tur Fouspations or Hovses.—The nature and condition of the soil upon which houses are to be built, should receive far more attention than is usually bestowed upon such subjects A soil which is spongy and damp, or contains much loose organic matter, is generally un- healthy, whereas a dry, porous soil affords a healthy site for building. Thus a compact sand and gravel soil, like that upon which the greater part of the city of New York is built, is very favorable to health; because it has suf- ficiently porosity to allow surface-water to under —— without causing malarious vapors. Wherever we find a soil deficient in gtavel or sand, or where gravel and sand beds underlaid with clay, there should be thorough subsoil drainage, because the clay retains the water, and a house buiit such a spot would otherwise always be damp and unhealthy. When the sub-soil is swampy, which is the case with many portions of various cities that have been filled in with what is called made earth, fever is liable to prevail in houses built in such localities, owing to the decay of organic matter underneath, and its ascension in the form of gas through the soil. When good drain- age cannot be effected in such situstions, and it is found necessary to build houses on them. they should always have solid floors of con- crete, laid from the outside of the foundations and covering the whole area over which the structure is erected. The old Romans, who were exceedingly sen- sible persons in all that related to houses. made all their buildings with concrete floors. over each of these a flooring of tiles was laid, These floors tended to prevent dampness in their houses, co: uently they were more healthy than they otherwise would have been. Sach floors also tended to prevent the crackin: of the walls, owing to the solidity and firmness imparted to their foundations. We recom- mend the general adoption of such floors of all buildings which may be hereafter built on made soil or in damp situations.—V. Y. Post. +o Ee A San Francisco shopkeeper was cun- ningly outwitted a few weeks since by an un- principled female, in this wise: “A lady, attracted by the “‘loveliness”’ of a cloak grace- fally hung over a mock woman’s figure, pur- chased it. In the act of paying, however, it became apparent that her finances lacked just one dollar of the required amount. After a little reflection, she told the shopkeeper she would leave with him all the money she had with her, and send her husband during the day with the balance. To this, of course, the shopkeepor consented. Among other custom- ers of the day, a+: lady,’ No. 2, was alao fasci- nated by the charms of this cloak, for which the greater portion of the price bad been paid, and, on inquiry, was informed by the dealer that it was already disposed of, at the same time unheedingly mentioning the particulars relative to the purchase. She sought an ac- complice, who soon reached the shopkeeper’s emporium. The unwary dealer promptly wrapped up the cloak in a neat parcel, and itely handed it over to the pretended hus- and. who quickty departed. But what was the shopkeeper’s astonishment. when, after the lapse of a few hours, the veritable husband of lady No. | made his appearance. There was no alternative; the closd was now est, and the money had to be refunded. And what was bis still greater astonishment when in a few mo- ments athird husband came in anxious for a cloak! He sunk in despair, leaving his clerk to settle the matter, thinking he had been swindled e: bh. The last comer proved to be & genuine , and of course had to be satisfied. A Piows Rewarx.—We hope our readers will not accuse us of making light of religion, for we assure them that nothing is further from our intention, yet we cannot forbear repeating the following true story, which we heard, not long since, from the lips of one who saw and heard the whole affair: In the town of K—,, up in New Hampshire, some years since, there was quite an exciting religious revival, and not afew who had been considered as ‘‘gone cases,” were convinced of the error of th 8, and induced to repent.
