The ladies among them yes- terday generally wore black lace veils over their heads. after the Spanish fashion,or whatare known as pic nichats with us. Soon the crowd coming over on that train, some two hundred in number, were driven in various directions, to their several quarters. I was taken down Broadway to Union Hall, passing the United States, American, and one or two other noted hotels on the way. The short drive was a very interesting one; as it gave me, at a first glance, 2 very good idea of the beau- tiful village and the four thousand strangers now domiciled in it. The hotel porticoes and windows, and all the lounging places under the shade of the magnificent elms whieh so grace Sar- atoga Springs. were alive with them; all appar- ently eagerly curious to scan the strangers being precipitated in among them. (where. as per direction, I duly swallowed five tumblers of the water.) I foond i-s magnificent marble basiu surrounded by gentlemen, ladies and children gut the liquid after the same fashion. It re- quired three persons to dip for them, each draw- ing up three tumblers of the water on a little stand or tumbler-rack at a time—and each making per- haps a dozen dfps in a minute. The grounds in which the Congress and Colurmbian Springs and the old water-works are situated are. to sry the least for ther mong the most beautiful | ever saw. They cover an extent of perhaps ten of bill, dale and deep plateau. All their walks are duly shaded with magnificent elins, maples. pines, firs, &c , and nearly all the rest of the space is devoted to thick sod, upon which all are for- bidden to tread. On the highest ground in the enclosure, also eapitally shaded. a circular rail- way with double track has been constructed, upon which all who so fancy propel themselves in a sort of velocopide, the exercise of which is caleu- lated to expand the lungs through the labor of turning the crank by which motion is given to the ear. ‘This toy-road acems to be patronised for the most past by juvenile visitors, who await their several turns with manifest patience. IJuter- spersed in the walks of these gronnds are many creditable marble statues suited to grace sucha place. The moststriking isa statuette of Mercury perched upon a pyramidal tower perhaps sixty feet high. which. in turn, is located at the poi: t where two streams of water, each capable of turn- ing a --right smart’? mill, rush forth from the bowels of Mother Earth. Not long since this joint stream furnished most of the supply necessary for the village water-works, now otherwise supplied. A few uncoutrollable fast-horse men tlitted upand down the street, and here and there a countryman or dealer with a fine span for sale might be secn slowly exhibiting their paces in front of the hotels by way of catching the eye of the desired customer. By noon most of the lady guests seemed to be visiting around the hotels. In this way the time was expended until 2 p.m., when dinner called the vast throng at Union Hall together again. For the ‘Mount Vernon Papers,” in the New York Ledger, he received $10,000, and in other ways smaller sums, making a contribu- tion to the Mount Vernon fund of $6=.163 56. In addition to his labors for this object, he has de- livered lectures for other benevolent associations making a total of more than ninety thousand dol- ‘ars in little more than three years culpable From Tenvanterec.—The New Orleans Pica- yune has letters from Miniatitlan. dated the 2d, which contain the intelligence that all property of the Transit Company was being seized for debts due the Mexicans, and that several cases were already up before the courts. The chief engineer of the company, Felton, with a number of the em- ployees of the road, had fled from the country for fear of being thrown into prison.
