The Cheapest Paper in America!” sce Triat or Rivig Gexs at Fort Monrox.—A correspondent at Fort Monroe (a Washingtonian) informs us that at a recent trial there of Sawyers rifle cannon, the target was at a range of 2.000 yards, and so perfect wes the flight that five suc- cessive shots struck the target within a circle of three feet. A new competitor by the name of Can- field had arrived at the fort, claiming that he had a shotso constructed as to get the rifle motion from a smooth bored gun. The board of ofticers tried it at a range of some 1,500 yards. The line of flight was good, bot the shot fell short of the target, caused. Mr. Canfield said, by the wings breaking on the front of the shot in the gun, the wings not being quite strong enough to stand the force of the charge, and the rifle motion depend- | ing wholly on the pressure of the atmosphere against them. The merits of the shot, consequently, could not be fully determined. i> Two “respectable but indisereet” young married women, in New York, were allowed by their indiscreet husbands to go alone on a pic-nic excursion to Hoboken. The consequence was that the ladies did not lack the impromptu atten- tion of gallant rakes on the ground, and were found in the evening by their husbands in a house of ill-fame. It appeared. however, that the jadies had still maintained their innocence, and a reconciliation was effected. I> Late advices from Sonora and Arizona state that the city of Mazatlan had been retaken by Gan- dara, and he was reported on his way to Sonora with a force of 1,500 men. ‘The condition of that State was rapidly becoming worse. The lawless bands which infested it were daily committing new outrages. The Arizona papers publish a card from Lieut. Mowry, in which he pledges himself to exert his influence in Cougress for the speedy organization of a Government for the Territory. Items Telegr: ed from W: ington.
