Editorial Correspondence of The Star aN New Yore [No.8] Jaly 25, 1859. My last left me coursing towards this point, # little north of the latitude of Cape May. Later in the day we passed Atlantic City, the new sea vathing place of the Philadelphians principally, which has a commanding appearance from where I viewed it—on the ocean, perhaps three miles and a timif fram it, Next, we passed in full view Little Egg harbor, and then the Barnegat light and shoal, the jatter baving-a.most deplorable history. The Star’s readers will remember that on the thirty miles of coast adjoining it on the north perhaps more lives have been lost than on all the rest of the coasts of the United States, and that the inhabitants of that portion of New Jersey until a few years ago were pirates, and plunderers of the unfortunates wrecked there. An involun- tary shudder came over me as! sailed past that stretch of thirty miles, the result of a remembrance of its sad history. The Barnegat light-house and that at Atlantic City are the tallest I ever saw. Shortly after passing that of Barnegat night set in. and my fellow passengers amused theniselves for half an hour in watching the lights’ revolutions and flashes, which have a fine effect at sea, the apparatus being arranged so as to be visible for twenty-five miles. We saw little on the water of interest after that; darkness and the occasional light of a vessel on starboard or larboard or cross- ing our path only being visible. The evening was spent by a very happy and satisfied company upon the upper deck, the wind being fair and the atmosphere cool and it. We reached our dock in the North Riyer at 2 a. m., when almost all on the ship were asleep, I. alone, of all the passengers remained awake to witness the operation of warping in a huge steam- ship to her moorings at so “dead”? an hour at night. That occupicd but a quarter of an hour's time—when all was still asdeath. At5S a.m. 1 left the ship, and after breakfasting hastily at a aeighboring restaurant, sallied down to Fulton Market On the way I had a fair view of Inf a dozen of the usually most thronged business streets of New York, which guiph in and vomit forth more goods (trade) in twenty-four hours, than appertains to half the business cities or towns in the Union annually. The stilluess of the scene was only broken by the hurrying down town of hundreds of workmen and womea employed in the various manufacturing houses, for which the lower part of New York city is remarkable. It will be remembered that few. except night watchmen, sleep in that portion of the city, not occupied as sailor boarding-houses or low taverns, of which there are many hundreds there. 1 was foretbly struck with a fact. that the women I saw hurrying to work in such crowds, appeared no older than those who hurried thus through the same streets twelve yearsazo. This proves that labor in a New York down-town factory or shop, is in the main but the apprenticeship of life for those females who resort to it. They seldom follow it more than a few years; marrying their fellow- workmen of the other sex early, or leaving it for other pursnits imlife. Perhaps ten thousand girls find a livelihood in New York below the Park. in the various type-founderies, binderies, bamd- box manufactories, gold-pencil factories, map-col_ oring establishinents, and the other almost innu- merable works which are carried on int Heys and streets of this portion of the city, the visible Portions of which appear to be occupied by tra- ders, lawyers, importers, joint stock companies, jobbers, &e. It is a sight, indeed. to sec thent streaming, as I saw them this morning, down Nassan street to work; or, in the evening return- ing from werk. Mey their employment never grow less: Fulton Market is perhaps the most celebrated in thiseountry. As smallas itis—for it hardly covers a feurth the space occupied by the Centre Market in Washington city—being that from which the shipping in port here is principally supplied. the business done in it is immense. I passed through itthis morning at too early an hour to witness much of its daily bargaining and chattering— while its stalwart occup:nts were busily arranging their various stocks of flesh, fish and fowl for sale. ‘The old adage saying that “+ boys will Lave their Tan.’ was aptly illustrated by the passaze of a stray U.S. Artillery soldier throuh it. The mar- ket boys (from ten to thirty years of aye) set up a huzza on his approve. from one end of the syuare to the other. The oddness of his rig was the cause thereof. It was seized upon by them simply asa sort of escape-valve through which they might let off a little of the surplus fun with which the class always overrun. John Sodger appeared to com- prebend that they were making a butt of him, but had sufficient discretion to wend his along without stopping to ‘make a muss.) in which he would probably have been pounded to a jelly. It was wise in him to elect to bear their jests aud jibes rather tnan the imprint of dozens of their hard fists, to one or the other of which he was sure to be treated. Seven, a. m., saw the streets in this vic inity thronged with thousands on thousands, hurrying toand fro. opening stores. chaffering over bargains. lounging, begging, laboring. &c. The hive by that time was fairly in motion, and the din of daily avocations became like the buzzing ofa hive of bees swarming. Men and women of all nations, not a few of them in their national costames, were in the crowd. On nine-tenths of the faces I saw, thirst after the almighty dollar was plainly marked. Few care less for money after making it. than the laboring or trading New Yorker; yet none others seem to me to labor as hard to obtain it. Turn 2s one will in the lower pertion of the city, almost all that strikes the eye is evidence of the determination of this population to make money. We of Washington are pretty fast im that line ; but a thorough-paced New Yorker, whether native or foreign born, will give any other person in America nine points in the game and beat him ere its conclusion, thronzh early rising, quick thinking. and the exercise of a remarkable spirit of go-ahead-ativeness wherever a dollar is to be made by prompt business habits.
