Dove, while eogaged io making an »xcavation for a sewer at the corner of F and Thirteenth streets, yesterday drank inordinately of cold water while very much heated. He was taken sick suddenly and went home: by administering restoratives fe was con- siderably revived. and at 9 o'clock last night, felt so inuch better that be expected to go to work opel this morning; but he soon began to fail and died about 12 o'clock. The frequency of those occurrences argues Strongly for the erec- tion of proper posts or racks at which to secure horses tpon the streets, and especially about the markets. ‘Tbe most docile animal may be fright- ened. and if not secured runaway and do very serious injury to persons and property. A LavpaaLe Acrtio: n yesterday a paper ‘was circulated in the workshops of the Navy Yard for the phrpose of obtaining subscriptions to relieve the unfortunate victims of the recent Kun explosion there, and amongst the hands the sum of $200 was subscribed. It is understood that this amount will probably be doubled by the subscriptions of the master workinen in the various departments, and the officers of the Yard who have not yet come forward. This substantial sympathy is in keeping with the character of the noble hearted fellow employés of the sufferers, and atfords an excellent example for the benev- olent minded in other portions of the city, ‘To-day, the Court met at Cximinan Cover. the usual hour, and took up for trial the cases of | the United States agt. John Dennison, in which the defendant was charged with an assault and battery upon one Luke Conner in Georgetown. Jas. Hoover was also placed on trial on a charge of participating in the above assault. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty in both cases. The Court then took up three cases, in Which John O*Day, M.
