McCathran teacher, was examined yesterday. There are on the roll of this school 73 pupils, of whom 70 were in attendance on this interesting occasion. The school is divided into four classes. The first class was examined in spelling, reading, writing from dictation, punctuation, grammar, geography, arithmetic, geometry, and the Consti- tution of the United. opin the second class in the same, except emenyees the Constitution; and rth branc the thrfd and in the same as tie second class. At the c! of the exercises, es were ad- dressed by Mr. MoNerbany and Mr. ironsides, in terms highly complimentary to both teacher and stadents. ’ Cornection.—We are informed on good au- thority that the statement of aday having been appointed * one day last week for the consumma- tion of the marriage” alluded to in the Star of ‘Tuesday, under the head of «‘ A love affair in high life in Alegandria,” is unfounded, there having been no engagement since the early of June. D. Massey, Esq., was taking an alring in his buggy, with a couple of children, on the Washington and Alex- andria Turnpike, when near the Poor House Lane, the horse grew frightened at the approach of the railroad train and ran off. Fortunately Me. Mas- Sey had alighted before the train drew nigh end the children got out before the borse ran away.
