EVENING STAR. I WASHINGTON CITY: SATURDAVY............00ee--.July 2y 18590 SPIRIT OF THE MORNING PRESS The Constitution, treating upon the con- Position of the new British Ministry, has no doubt but that, representing as they do the liberal and enlightened sentiments of the people of Great Britain, they will be just as earnest and cordial in their desire and efforts to promote the best and most intimate rela- tions between their country and ours, as were the late Derby Ministry. The Intelligencer gives an exhibit of the manufacturing industry of the United States, as compiled by Mr. Jos. C. @. Kennedy, from the census of 1550. —- I> A cricket match will be played in Troy, N_Y., on the moraing of the 4th of July, on the grounds of the Watervliet Cricket Club, between eleven married and eleven unmarried members of the club. This isa new way of testing the effect Matrimony Torin lament orders of Secretary Cobb, Collector Schell of the New York Custom House, ou ‘Thursday notitied some eghty of the employers of that establishment that their services were no longer required, The de. eapitated are entry and invoice clerks, and. meas- urers and assistant weighers. 177° The Winan’s steamer, at Baltimore, within the last few days, has made three experimental trips on the Patapsco and Cheasnpeake. Twenty Miles an hour was made on Thursday last. ‘This was regarded as satisfactory. Ina short time new fronts will be added to the boat, which will not only add considerable to her length, but, it is ex- pected, will increase her speed. 7" At New York, on Wednesday, a trotting match came off over the Union Course between George Patchen and Lady Woodrutf for $2,.0, mile beats; best 3 in 5; wagon and driver weigh- ing 30 pounds. The first heat was won by Patchen in the second by Lady Woodruff in 2:32; the third in 2:314,, and the fourth in 2:33 by Pateben. The attendance was sinall, the weather being very warm. There was considerable bet- ting. Pateben having the call from the start, and he won tlie trot in fine style, making the fastest time to a weight of 3u0-pound wagon and driver ou record ‘Tue Michican THREN RatLoan Disaster. —Caver or tug Disaxter—At the spot where the disaster happened, a sruall stream or ‘branch’? is crossed by the road, on an embankment twenty- five to thirty feet in height. Here, for the passage of the water, is a good stone culvert, which has heretofore proved of sutticient capacity to carry through all that descended the creek. In the afternoon and evening before the accident, that locaiity was visited by a rain storm of extraordi- nary severity. The water fell in torrents, raising all the smalier streams, after the lapse of a few hours, toau unprecedented height. it is supposed that the drift-wood carried down by the little “branch” accumulated on the upper side of the culvert and caused an obstruction that every chip. leaf, and tloating hib made more se- Tious until the passage of the water was almost en- rely stopped. The water thus dammed up at- tacked the embankment, which is of sandy loam— more sand than loam—and soon dissolved it and carried it off, or made-it so soft and yielding that as soon as the weight of the train came upon it, it gave way Tue Btonpin Niacaga Feat—if Sam Patch bas identified his name with Genesee Falls. He desired at first to cross from Goat Island to x little below Table Rock, thus passing directly through the column of mist that the Great Horse Shoe Pall constantly sends up; but the Porter family, who own (Goat Island, refused to allow bim the use of their premises. The rope wes therefore thrown across the river at 2 peiut about @ mile and a quarter below the falls. and between the Cliftom House and the Suspension Bridge This poiut is some distance from the cataract it- self, and thus much of the intense interest of the fest was lost Some 12.000 peopfe were gathered to witness the feat. the majority of them being on the Canada shore, where they had nothing to pay for the sight. Business is duller just now throughout the city than at any previous time for a year past. This state of things must continue a shorter time than heretofore, as our city’s business population, and the demands upon them, increase heavily yearly. We think, from all the datain our reach, that Washington city has now @ popula- tion of between 75,000 and $0,000, and confi- dently expect that the census to be taken in 1560 will prove the eorrgetness of this opinion. We rely most, incoming to it, upon the gradual but rapid increase of the city cireulation and advertising of the Star; a sound criterion, az all Know who publish papers of universal cireu- lution where they may be printed—estimating the population of Washington at 75,000 souls. and the Star's regular circulation among them is nearly twice as large as that of any other Paper_among the population of the city where printed.
