Fa The foreign news shows a farther decline in breadstuffs; the bakers should, therefore, aban- don the ‘shave’ and give their customers their snoney’s worth. — FP The Canadian authorities have made mate- tial reductions on merchandise, wheat, flour, corn, staves, and lumber, passing through the Welland Canal, which took effect on the 15th inst. UP The steamship America, which sailed from Beston on Wednesday for Europe, took out 67 passengers and $410,000 in specie. The provinces of the Argentine Confedera- tion show their approbation of the war by public demonstrations. 7 The bark Aun Elizabeth, at New York from Rosario, reports that when she passed Bue- nes Ayres, May ist, there was a continual firing ef guns. It is supposed a battle was in progress between the Paraguayans and Buenos Ayreans, as it was hinted to that effect at Rosario. weer -— - - DETAILS OF THE FOREIGN NEWS BY THE EUROPA. Tre Battie or Parestro. The London Times says the victory of the allies at Palestro was more decisive than that of Monte- bello. This time the Austrians can scarcely say that, having aci their purpose, they re- tired, because her J wished to retire It was to them an important object to hinder a junction of tbe Sardiaieus with Canrobert. In this they en- tirely failed. ‘This victory was won by Sardin- jans, their king at their head. The Times highly extols Vietor Emanuel and his army, und says that the hopes of Italy rest on the banners of the Sardinian hing. ‘The official Piedmontese Gazette of June 1, in publishing an order of the day, has the following concerning the fight of the day previous: he enemy, in greater force than ourselves, ously attacked our right, in order to hinder our junction with Gen. Canrobert. The fourth division, under Cialdini, behaved incomparably. The conduct of the Zouaves contributed considerably to the vic- tory. An Austrian general and several other of the enemy's officers were killed. Some details of the affair at Palestro are given in a dispatch dated Vercelli, June ist. viz: “The Piedmontese army, after having repulsed the ene- my along its whole front, on its riyht wing, fora moment outilanked by the Austrians, who threatened tie bridge of boats—across the Sesia— over which Gen. Canrobert was to effecta junction with the King. The Emperor then dispatched the third regiment of Zonaves, who, unsupported by artillery, rushed upon the enemy's battery, planted on the further side of the deep canal, bay- oneting or hurling into the water the companies posted on our side of the canal for the defense of the battery, tuking two pieces of cannon and tive hundred prisoners. ‘fhe Zouaves had one otticer and one bundred and twenty privates killed; also. two hundred wounded, among whom were ten ofticers.”’ MiscELLanzous Irems. Accounts relative to the movements of Garibaldi are conflicting, bat nothing warrants the belief that he has met with any serious reverse. On the contrary, later advices affirm that he was pros:- cating his campaign with undiminished vigor and success. i The Times’ Verona telegram of June 2d differs from its Vienna telegram of same date, which states that Gen d’Urban commanded and cap- tured Verese. The former has it that he arrived there without meeting with resistance, and levied war contributions. ‘T'he sub-Governor of Londrio fled with the gendarmes and public treasure into the Tyrol. Sardinian officials ill the publ in Londrio. Orders had been issued at Verona forbidding the ringing of bells on the approach of the enemy. The giving of information to the enemy about tie movements of the Austrian troops have 1 hibited, and will be punished mest severely The departure of voluntesrs from the Roman Provinces to Genoa is increasing. The Times Paris correspondent says that the Empress, and M. M. Walewski, Mould, and others are in favor of peace, and will give their best support to the same as soon as the French en- ter Milan. The reported disaffection in Tusc fair of no moment. ‘The Liverpool Times says there is every reason to believe that the massof the French aud the Piedmontese army is advancing on Mil € military read and railway which .- celli, throuzh Novara and the Ticino, across the Ticino at the bridge of Duafalord. ‘Fie london Giobe also says that the latest movements of the French and Serdiniane appear to indicate an ad- vance on Milan from the c re As soon as Marshal Baraguasy d’Milliers evacua- ted Casiexgio, Mentebello and Voybera, on Mon- day, the Austrians in catered these towns. So, we trust that he will at once avail himself of his privilege explained above, and thus while com- plying with the unanimous wish of the com- munity that the work shall be commenced immediately, relieve, at once, a3 he has the power to do, the extensive real suffering for want of employment that now certainly exists in our midst. Apropos—We desire to say that we have seen nothing identifying the Mayor with the plan to defeat the execution of the present law for the construction of the worke, involved, wheth- er so designed or not, in the introduction of a bill to substitute another law in its stead in the Alderman’s Board on Monday evening last. Its considcration there can have but a mischievous effect. If eficcting anything, it will simply be the means of inducing the Mayor to refrain from the prompt execution of the existing law, which it is his plain duty to carry out as faith- fully, promptly, and fully as he executes any other law of the Corporation. The plea that the existing law is defective, and that there- fore a substitute should be enacted, is a very childish one, in view of the fact that it has not yet been put into operation, and that therefore there exists no more reason to condemn it (the law) than before the effort to defeat its enact- ment under that plea failed so signally. In commencing the operation of an extensive system like that of hereafter supplying nearly every house in Washington city with water, it is not improbable that the earliest legislation to thatend may prove defective in many par- ticulars. But-the common-sense mode of deal- ing with such defects is to amend the existing law only as they show themsclycs in its ope- ration. Until a fair trial shall have been ac- corded to the present law, it is utterly impos- sible that the Board of Aldermen will legislate further on the subject. Their last vote of ten against to four in favor of the effort to defeat its consummation, (that law's) shows how hope- less of any other result than the possible post- ponement of the time when the Water Works of the Corporation shall be commenced, this movement for almost an entire new law really ir a Tue Carers.—We incidentally mentioned, on the day before yesterday, that the late re- moval of Mr. Erasmus J. Middleton from the post of Seeretary to the Board of Aldermea of Washington city was in pursuance of a vote of a caucus of the anti-Know Nothing party mem- bers of the Board. At that caucus all of them except Dr. Ma- gruder were in attendance. Fourteen ballots se oftices | were taken. Vhroughout this protracted bal- | | loting, to the last, the members are said to have voted as follows: For Mr. Middleton's reélection — Messrs. Fisher, Bayly, Price, Dunnington, Donoho, and Clark—6. For Mr. Laskey— Messrs. Ward, Moore, MeNerhany, Brown, and Aaron Miller—5. Bilank—Mr. Dove. On the last ballot, Mr. Dove is said to have voted for Mr. Laskey instead of throwing a blank vote as before; and Mr. Clark is sail to have changed his vote from Middleton to Las- key; thus making the total vote stand—for Laskey 7; for Middleton 5. Mr. Middieton had been the Board's Seeretary for thirty-cight years—not twenty-eight, as we stated a day or ; two since. = Feo tre Geir or Mextec. — Dispatches from Turner, commanding United | State: Saratoga, dated Tampico, jist uit.- have en received by the Navy Department, in which he says rumors had reached Vern Cruz that Gencral Wool, with a detachment of reactionisis, was about to make a descent upon the city of Tampico, and Minister McLane thought a vessel of war neccessary to protect American interests in that quarter, especially ts the general commanding at Tampico had direeted the American flag to be hauied down from the American consulate, insisting that emsular exequaturs have been, by ; ublic de- erce, withdrawn by the reactionary govern- ment. Accordingly, the Saratoga sailed to Tampico; but as General Wool, instead of marching upon Taimpico, procecded to support General Masia in a contemplated attack upon Feneral Dege!lado, and as no 2pprehensions of immediate danger to American interests at Tampico were felt, the Saratoga was to leave for Vera Cruz upon the Ist inst. ees Pawraw Braspy.—In a letler recently re_ cently reecived by the Commissioner of Pat- ents from Judge Law, of Evansville, Indiana, the writer says that having met at the house of 2 friend the other day, where there was some Pawpaw brandy, the distiller remarked that the Pawpaw, which is indigenous to our bottom lands, yields more spirit to the bushel than any other fruit, and that he has contract- ed for 1,000 bushels to distill the coming sca- son.
