The improvements effected in field artillery and in small arms within the last few years will tell more against Austria in the present war than against her antagonists, from the fact that they in a great measure neutralize her incon- testable superiority in cavalry. For active Service in tho field there is no power in the world which can complete with ber in this arm of the service. The Russian cavalry is more numerous, but both men and horses are rustly inferior to those of several western armica. The horses are low bred, and the men want both the great eszeutialz, one or other of which all good cavalry must have—weight and viva- ity. ‘They figured well on more than one occasion in the wars of the Frouch empire, but it was tarely they ventured to make head against either Kellerman or Murat. In all the wars with the Turks, previous to the last one, they generally sought shelter from the sharp sabres and blood horses of the spahis behind the in- fantry and artillery. On the only two occasions in which they were brought into action in the Crimea, in 1855, they behaved contemptibly. They were ridden down ingloriously by the nd were repulsed by a not par- ticularly well-direeted volley from Sir Colin Campbell's Highlanders, drawn up in line. We. of course. except the Cossacks from the charge of inefficiency; but fighting ia not their As combatants they are worthless; ae seouts they are unequalled. In fuct, the ordi- nary Russian peasant has not either the bodily activity or personal dash which must always enter into the composition of a good horseman A cavalry :oldier must be more than well-dril- led to be good at his trade. A great deal has always to be left to his individual! qualitics. The French soldier has all the dash, pluck and vivacity which cavalry so much need; and if he could be taught to ride, and France had any horses worth riding. the French cavalry would be the finest in the world. But the honest truth must be confessed. that between the pigskin and the Gallic seat there seema to be an irreconcilable hostility. Riding rarely eomes natural to a Frenchman, and there is srobably at this moment not a worse ‘-seat’’ nown in any ziewave in Europe than that of the French dragoon. The best French regiment, to any body who is at all familiar with the re- lations which ought to exist between man and horse, is one of the most painful sizhta in na- ture. Six or seven squadrons shot out of their saddles in full panoply, a foot-and-a-half into the air, and let down again, apparently in helpless agony, amidst a erssh of steel and brass, without apparent defence aguinst con- tract with mother earth. is not by any mean: a pleasing spectacle. The soldier is. however, at all times worthy of a noble steed. ‘The rem- nants of the French cavalry are generally fit for nothing but the wi or the dung cart— heavy, lumbering, big-headed. « ware-quar- tered, slow aud low-bred, the wonder is that it is even possible ever to expect a charge out of them. Their leading pvints uro tolerably brought out in Rosa Bonheur’s “JIorse Fair.” but she has gifted her animals with an appar- eut fire, which no Norman carbhorse was ever known to display. We once heard a foreign officer account for all the great ch of t French cavalry by the supposition that, after the animals roused into a gallop, the riders lost control over them, snd literally “rolled upon the foe."’ But the sneer is ill-founded. The French cavalry, i ite of all its defects has performed as brilliant feats as any in the world, owing, howe’ more to the grent pluck and dash of the men than either to its horses or horsemanship. When a Frenchman finds him- self galloping full speed. in a crowd. his mere excitement makes him a formidable antagonist With the English cavalry our readers are generally so familiar that little need be said about it. For one charge, or one march, or fur appearance on parade, no cavalry in the world can be compared to it. Continental officers are rarely as well mounted as the English private The horses are half or three-quarters bred. and the men probably prozent the finest physique of any similar bedy in the world. The eonse- uence is that in a charge they are irresistible No other cavalry in equal force ean offer any- thing like a decent resistance to their onset But the wen are too vy aud the horses too tender, and the result is that two months active service renders them worthless. Their history in the Crimea, short, admirable illustrates their good and bad pointe. No power, however, can boast such # body of eavalry as Austria. It is enormous in num- ber. Tho horses are excellent—well-bred handy, active and courageous. The mon are bold ‘riders, good swordsmen, aud better still are the right weight. and are reerui lin reat part from two of the greatest equestrian nations in the world, the Poles and Hungariane Jn the monstrosity so often witnessed in France, of a giant of 200 pounds weight, laden with arms a outrements, astride of a boast not igger than himself is never wit nessed. In short the Austr is the model light-cavalry man cf the wo small, light, wiry, active, indefatigable. ari from his cradle. his bridle in his hee ned} hand, eye and heart on his sabre, indefatigable in the march, swift in the charge. everywhere y turns and nowhere long, it may be almost said that the Hungarian hussar, now that the Turkish spxhi is at each sks pust, is the only light cavalry, in fuct the only cavalry iu ex- istence. Ifis cuts are as fatal and sure us other men’s thrusts. His horse is part of himsctt: riding or fighting are his pastime. In former days he was the glory and boast of the Austrian army. Those gay swarms of hardy little men which shot from its sides on the march were its surest aidsin victory, its besi safuguards de- feat. All this, however, goes dowa before the En- field rifle and the Armstrong gun. Let tho horse be ever #v swift, the sabre ever so sharp, or the rider ever so bold, the conical ball is too much for him. A charge of cavalry upon a body of properly armed infantry bids fair to be henceforward impossible. ‘wo hundred yards has been fixed by the hest authority as the proper charging distance, and in by-gone days it was only at two hundred yards that the fire of square began to tell, and suddles io be emptied. But now-a-days the iron rain patters on the horsemen before they get within half-a- mile of the fue. If they quicken their pace to close, the maddest charge will not bring a dragvon-horse on the bayonet io less than three minutes. and when he arrives, he is blown and disabled. ‘* When he arrives” —it he arrives. we should say; for ey. travers- ing eight Luadred yardsat the top of his speed, he reecives half a dozen volleys from practised sharpshooters. To send cavalry on such ser- vice will. we may safely predict, houcefor ward be considered madness. The foot-soldier has a swifter messenger iu his cartouche-box than the fleetest hussar, and Ausivia loses her wost efficient weapon.—V. ¥.
