SPIRIT OF THE MORNING PRESS. The Constitution reviews the recent speech of the Hon. Wm. C. Rives, and suggests that it echoes the death knoll to a uxited Opposi- tion,’which has already sounded from both Whig and “Black Kepublican” quarters. The Constitution shows that it is the fault ef Congress, and not of the President, as inti- mated by the Opposition, that our citizens have lacked protection in Mexico. The Intelligencer is opposed to any attempt upon the integrity of Mexican territory at the present time, whether undertaken under the auspices of a legitimate diplomacy, or of that “organized emigration” which is prompted by private pillage. sce DJ~ The Medical Convention, which was in session last week, at Louisville, has adjourned to meet at New Haven next year. 17" The Legislature of California have resolved to have the laws of the State translated into the Spanish language, paying therefor 75 cents per folio. this year in France to one-eighth. It fs not prob- able, however, that that quality of so-called cham- pagne will diminish. ij” A New Haven candidate for the New Jer- sey Bisboprick has putin his claims. His name is Littlejohn. Another of the candidates whose name We Lave seen is the Rev. John Bigg. >" In New York, on Saturday, a policeman was arrested, charged with stealing a diamond necklace, valued at $125, from the neck of agirl ‘whom he had arrested and was taking to the police siation. D> The Savannah Republican says 1,341 tons guano have been transported to the interior of that State, over the railroads, for the four months end- ing 2tst March. The Republican says—the older portions of Georgia are more thrifty and produc- tive, at this time, than they were twenty years ago. In Chicago, the other evening, a musical conductor who had often been outraged by pecple leaving during the last few moments of the per- formance, introduced into the programme of an oratorio, preceding the closing chorus; the follow- Ing notice : + Phree minutes intermission to allow those to retire who do not wish to remain till the ‘clese.”* Avstria’s Staexcts —From statistics which reach us through a French channel, we tind that the military strength of Austria in time of peace is represented by 400,000 men, and in time of war by 750,000 men. ‘Le Austrian Navy, which is ef very recent creation, is composed of 135 ves- vels, armed with S25 guns, and manned by 8,707 seamen Missionanixe ror Jarax.—The clipper ship Surprise sailed for Hong Kong, China, on S1tur- day afternoon, from New York. Among the pas- sengers were the Rev. Richard J. Walsh and wife, the Rev. S. B. Brown and wife, the Rev. G. FP. Verbeck and wife, Dr. 8. B. Simmons and wife, Mr. Francis Hall, Mr. Greery, two Misses Brown, Miss Adrain and Master Brown, missionaries to Japan, sent out under the auspices of the Re- formed Dutch Churnh. The vessel was towed down the Bay amid the cheers of hundreds of in- terested spectators. Music.—We are indebted to the author for a very interesting pamphlet of the following title. Viz: A Treatise on Vocal and instrumental Music 3 by Professor A. F. Little, author of Farewell to Summer, Morning Prayer, Ellen Elvina, Annie Worthington, Alexandria March, Berryville Polka, Washington Schottisch, Ivy Waltz, &c., &c. Washington: Thomas McGill, Printer, 1559. Published by W. G. Metzerott, Washington city ‘his litthe work is a treatise on the history of music, from the earliest times of which records or traditions are preserved. It embraces an extensive fund of information on the snbject to which it re- lates, pithily set forth, indeed, and is therefore very readable. 0 Our neighbor of the Eramiaer is informed that our authority for saying that the capital story of “ Adele Barron” orig ally appeared in the Knickerbocker Magazine Is first class—j 4., that of the author himself, and also that of the editor ofthe Eraminer, who, as editor of the Wash- ington News,”’ copied the story years ago in that Paper, and gave credit to the Kuickerbocker. ‘The author of “ Adele Barron.’ we may add, is a yen- tleman of well-known public spirit and benevo- lence, and was formerly a resident of this city. It will perhaps be violating no confidence to add that the strikingly rapbic sericsof articles headed “* Legislative Experiences,” which appeared some time since in the N.Y. Post, was from his pen. “A Skull-and-Bone Sketch,” copied inthe Star from this series, will be remembered by our read- ers. eee US We are indebted to the pablishers, who send us through the hands of their Washington agent for the work, J. Shillington, the fifth volume of the New American Encyclopedia, a popular dic- tionary of general knowledge. Edited by George Ripleyand C.A. Dana. New York: published by D. Appleton & Co., 316 and 343 Broadway, and 16 Liltle Britain, London. ‘This fifth volume of the great American work of the times covers the ground from “char”? to “cou.’* Its preparation, as in the case of its pre- decessors, was the work of mauy of the ablest pens in the land, each writer for ithaving had assigned to him a subject or subjects which from previous training it was well known he could best handle, We doubt whether as great a uvimber of com- petent writers ever before cnguyed in the prodne- tion of a similar work of the kind, though in that way only can really useful encyclopedias be gotten up. In some of the previous volumes we found biographies, short to be sure, of parties striking us as not being worthy of being recorded in so important a work. That, however, is a mere mat- ter of taste, such books being prepared to suit the tastes of all. With that single exception, Apple- times payin bedta ls by long odds the finest of the in either hemisphere—in fact, the only*general encyclopedia wherein pier Jects are sensibly, correctly and worthily treated. — SS cs cay to all on either ic who aspire to - 4 Pi Possess a real AxgivaL or Commissioner Bow1ix at New Yorx.—The United States steam frigate Sabine, Capt. Adama, arrived at the Brooklyn Navy Yard on Monday evening, after a very rapid run from Montevideo, having left that port on the 2th of March. She brought home Commissioner Bow- lin and Samael Ward, Esq ; Secretary of Leya- tion. Immediately after the Sabine anchored, Thos. J Page, jr., Eaq., Secretary to Flag Oficer Sbubrick, set out for Washington, bearing impor. from the Commodore and Com- WASHINGTON NEWS AND GOSSIP at ‘THE INCON SIDERABLE RAIN that set in shortly after nvon yesterday, fell must opportunely for the interests of all. It was:requitéd to loosen the surface crust of the ground im which corn had been planted, in all directions, for seis cuit of fifty miles around the Federal metropo- lis. The planting very generally took place before the last previous rain, which baked the superincumbent soil, so that unless loosened by rain or man’s hand, much of the growing grain beneath it ran a risk of failing to break its way through the crust; 2 frequent cause for replanting, from which the farmer never suc- ceeds in obtaining & satisfactory yield. The wheat, too, throughout the same region of country, is just commencing to head, in many places, and this rain will stimulate it to head wherever it falls; thus insuring it, in a great measure, from injury from the joint worm, which made its appearance about the Ist of May inst., as usual of late years. On the whole, nothing could have been more fortunate for the consumer of what the farmer sells, as well as for the farmer, than this gentle outpour- ing from the clouds. Tue Santxe’s Orricers.—The following is a complete list of the officers attached to the U. S. frigate Sabine, which arrived at New York on the 9th of May, as reported to the Navy Department : Flag Officer, W. B.
