Of Monday last at Orange court, there wasan exciting strug- gle, we hear, between the Democratic suppor- ters of Mr. Smith and Mr. Shackleford, respec- tively. in which thelgtter telauphed signally. The point of the former was to secure the adoy - tion of resolution endorsing Mr. Smith as the candidate of the Democratic party of Orango county for re-election to Congress. That of the latter was to bring about tho adjournment of the meeting (Démocratic) that was convened at the end of the discussion between the Senato- rial candidates, (Messrs. Green and Early,) without am expression of the party in favor of either Democratic aspirant for the position, In that they triumphed ; but not without a row, in hich, if we are correctly informed, a few eyes were-blackened and noses were bloodied. At Fauquier Court, in Warrenton, the three candidates for Congress—Messrs. Smith, Shac- kleford, and Thomss—met and discussed the issues of the times. Each was backed hy a host of eager and vebiferous fricnds, nearly ell of whom exercised their lungs in cheering on his favorite. The discussion is sxid to have had pretty much the same result as that on Monday of Isst week, at Culpeper Court, where the large erowd was about evenly di- vided, as at Warrenton on this oceasion—the Opposition men being to a man for Thomas; the preseut members of the Democratic party who had been members of Know-Nothing lodges being for Smith, and the Democrats who hud always been firm opponents of the Kuow-No- things being mostly fur Shackleford. In the course of the discussion, Mr. Smith was induced to read extracts from the now so famous Walker letter—the letter for the pro- duction of which Mr. Shackleford had hereto- fore called in vain—alleging that if produc- ed from the pocket of Mr. Smith it would surely convict him of pleading for the Know-Nothing nomination for Governor for himself, against Mr. Wise. As the extracts read by Mr. Smith havo been described to us, they were pleas that nomination, embracing a refusal to join | the lodges on the ground that to do so would lose him Democratic votes, and thus endanger his clectivn over Wise. On the whole, they have coriainly served to whet the appetite of the Domoerats of the district for the whole let- ter—a lengthy document, it appears—which. for the sake of siraightforwardness and fair dealing in politiss, it isto be hoped will eren- tually be brought to light. As faraswe have learned, the contest for Congress in the district is likely to end in Mr ‘Thomas's getting the vote of the Opposition with few exceptions, Mr. Smith's getting the vote of A sicamer hes just been builtat Pittsburg, | the ratting Know Nothings and some others to navigate the Kansas rive and fifty miles of Pike's P commodation for passengers, much taste and elegance.
