The Union congratulates the country on the intelligence received by the New York Hera/d of the peaceable adjustment of the Paraguay difficulties. ; The Union, speaking of European affairs, says that the attitude of the world at the pres- ent time is more disturbed than it has been for years, and expresses its gratification with the peaceable tenor of the last news. The Union alluding to the State canvass in Kentucky, says, whatever may be the exer- tions of the Opposition, it expects the Demoe- racy of the State to make a clean sweep in August next. The Intelligencer apprehends that the dis- patch of our National legislation too often fails for quite other reasons than an absolute want of time, and those are speeches for buncombe and that litigious style of discussion which has of Iate become too common in the Halls of Congress. —— -— -+mee 10> The farmers on the western end of Long Island, N. D7 The alleged fugitive slave Daniel Danger- field, alias Webster. in Philadelphia, was yester- day afternoon discharged by the Commissioner, his identity not having been established. An in- tense excitement prevailed pending the announce- ment of the decision, and as soon as the prisoner was set at liberty he was placed-in a carriage and drawn through the streets by a thousand colored men. 7 In New York, the Historical Society held a very interesting meeting on Tuesday night, when Rev. Drs. Hawks and Osgood, Prof. Green, Hon. Messrs. Bancroft, Folsom, and others, made ad- dresses on the Ninevah marbles, which were af- terwards exhibited to the audience. Measures ‘were also taken to secure an Egyptian collection for that city. U7 In Philadelphia, on Tuesday morning, a little affair occurred which occasioned consider- | able scandal. It appears that the proprietor of a hotel in that vicinity, supposing that his wife was out of town, took his board and bed with another woman. The wife suspecting something wrong, came home at an early hour, and detected her Hiege lord and attempted to shoot him with a re- volver. U7 The body of a female that was. found in a soap box at the Hudson river Railroad depot, Al- Dany, the other day, and was at first supposed to be the body of the missing Mrs. Brannan has been carefully examined by Dr. Armsby, and pro- nounced to be that of an old lady who had been | dead for several years, and had doubtless been packed and shipped for cheap transportation 2s a medical subject. 7” The American State Council of Maryland assembled in Baltimore on Wednesday morning, and passed resolutions re-affirming their unaltera- ble attachment to the principles which have here- tofore characterized the American party, and in- viting the whole body of conservative opposition in all the States of the Union to co-operate with them in selecting delegates to 2 national conven- tion for the nomination of President and Vice President. —— Rervsine ro Take THR OatH.—In the case of Isaac and Spencer, the two slaves charged with murder in Memphis, when the jary were directed t» take the required oath, a member, Mr. W. The law of 1845 authorizes such a contract to be made—not a law of 1835 as a typographical error made us say yester- day.
