oe EVENING STAR WASHINGTON CITY: TUESDAY . April 5, 1859. SPIRIT OF THE MORNING PRESS. The Unton. speaking of the Boston post office, says that the measure passed at the late session prohibiting its removal until after the next session of Congress was carried ingthe Senate under the erroneous impression, on the part of | Democratic Senators, that its passage was de- sired by the Department, and that it was put through the House on the morning of the 4th of March under the supposition that it had been carefully considered in the Senate. The Union says it understands that the Attorney General has decided that as the office was not entirely removed until the 5th of the month, the law, which is regarded as having passed on the 3d, bas been violated, and that the postmaster must remove back to the old site upon the guar- antee being given by the remonstrants as re- quired by the proviso of the act. The Union takes the Savannah Republican to task for misrepresenting the tariff policy of the Democratic party in alledging that it ad- voeates low duties, while it has actually in- creased them to an alarming extent. The Intelligencer publishes and comments faverably upon @ communication from C. K. Marshall, of Vicksburg. Miss., advocating a ship canal across the northern neck of Florida, Thé communication estimates the cost of a canal a hundred miles (or less) in length at $10,000,000; and the Intelligencer suggests commercial ad- of such a work both in reference to the trade between the Atlantic and Gulf States, and via the Tehuantepec route with the Pacific States. —— +208 WASHINGTON NEWS AND GOSSIP. Jcepek Crawrorp.—Invidious newspaper comments having been made upon Judge Craw- ford’s declension to wave, during the current trial, the rule of the Criminal Court of this District, requiring prisoners being tried for murder to oceupy ‘the duck’”’ while in the court-room, we have to remark that his de- cision on that point met the evident approval of the counsel of the accused—D. E. Sickles. Their allegation was that so great was the crowd intervening between them and their client as that they could neither seo him nor conveniently communicate with him at all times, during the trial. Toobviate that diffi- eulty, Judge Crawford, though declining to permit the prisoner to seat himself at the at- torney’s table, as requested, announced that he would direct the position of the prisoner's dock in the court-room to be changed, so as to be immediately in the rear of his counsel; and also, that thereafter the bailiffs of the Court should keep a space between the prisoner and his counsel ciear, so as to facilitate any neces- sary communication between then. Apropos:—A Washington dispatch in the New York Times of yesterday afternoon be- rates Mr. District Altorney Ould for requiring, in this trial, that the provision of law making it necessary that a juror shall be possessed of property to the amount of $800 above and be- yond his liabilities, be duly observed. It is to be presumed that such comments on the manner in which he is discharging his duty in this trial will only serve to commend him the more strongly as a public functionary, to those whose lives and fortunes may be directly af fected by the manner in which the laws of the District of Columbia are executed. No one doubts that the law requires the juror, in such a case here. to be worth $300 above his debts, and the District Attorney has no more right to waive, in this trial, compliance with that pro- vision of law, than to waive that which makes it hia duty to indict and try D. The meeting was very numer- ously attended, each school in the town being largely represented, and the proceedings through- out were of the most harmonious and juteresting character. The main objects of the Association are for a regular interchange of views between those engaged in this laudable christian enter- ise, the n of harmony and good feel- ng, and the adoption from time to time of such means as will be most likely to result in the greatest good to the rising generation, and pro- mote the prosperity of the cause.
