Apri 4.—This much talked-of trial was entered upon this morning, in the Criminal Court of the District of Colambi ‘ In anticipation of a pressure at the City Hall, a large police force was ordered to be present at half-past eight o’clock in the morning. The precaution was a wise one, for the crowd in and around the City Hall was greater than was ever drawn together there by a trial at law of any description. As it was a good-humered and con- siderate crowd, the police had little to do but to give information and make sugyestions to the over eager. which in all eases were promptly and pleasantly comptied with. We may add that the urbanity and politeness of the police to all. con- tributed much indeed to the gond temper of all Who were components of the large gathering. THE MORNING Morr. At 9 o'clock the conrt room 1 n to put on a busy aspect. The Marshal and Deputy Marshal ri ed in making active preparations for pdation of the press of people which were already gathering in front of the doors. The desks of the Court inside the bar were all removed, and replaced by long benches from the lobby, and chairs. A strong guard of police, under Capt. Goddard, were marched into the court reom, and statroned at the several doors of entrance. About 9 o'clock, a crowd of reporters of the = Presented themselves in the court room and xan to look for sitting room within the bar. Among them we noticed T.D. Sultzer, of the Baltimore Cli 5 H.G. Hays and Gobright, of the New York Associated Press; E. T. Adams, of he Galesburg (il.) Democrat; A. =. Hill, of the New York Tribune; Geo. W. Adams, of the Phil- adeiphia Eveni: Bulletin; Mr. Shaw, of the New York Herald; F. Smith, and others. Within the railing the seats were filled by an unnsuaily large re; ntation of the Washington bar, ai mingled with the lawyers, seat or standing. as they could find room, were a number of strangers of note. Among these were Mr. Sick- les, father of the prisoner, Mr. Bajioli, an elderly, bald-headed_ gentleman, father of Mrs. Sickles, Chevalier Wykoff, Thomas F. Meagher. the Irish striot, Hon. Emanuel B. Hart, of New York, Mr. Carey, of the New York Times, Thomas J. Brown, F.sq., of New York, and others. At 1% a. m., Judye Crawford came into sourt, and the session was opened. The petit jurorsef the pending panel were called by nome, and answered Mr. Sickies’s counsel. Messrs. Graham, of New York. Brady. do.. Ratcliffe. Chilton, Magruder, Hon. Mr. Phillips, late of Alabama, and Mr. Stan- ton. came into the court-room afterward. Mr. Carlisle appeared on the part of the United States, to assist the District Attorney. From the position he was now placed in, he might as well be in the jail, for any com- munication which he could have with his counsel Mr. Magruder followed. asking if it was too much to request that the prisoner might be placed in such position as that he could be confronted with the witnesses and the jurors. Mr. M. cited several cases where prisoners charged with the highest crimes known to the law had enjoyed the privileges of a seat at the trial table, and pens, ink and paper accorded them. ‘The Court asked if the gentleman ever knew a trial for murder where the prisoner was not placed in the dock. Mr. Magruder replied that he had. It was often done in the State of Virginia. and he was informed by his colleagues that such was tie practice in New York and Alabama. Judge Crawford said that was not the case here. He would direct that the dock be removed to near the railing in the rear of his counscl. and that the bailifts keep a space clear so that counsel could have access to the prisoner, but he could not permit the prisoner to be placed by the side of his counsel.
