THE EVENING STAR. Gartast Act oF ax Exornser.—On the night of the 22d ult., as a passenger train was passing along the New Albany and Salem railroad, near nden. Indiana, the engineer perceived a human tigure ahead. and instantly blew his whistle and shut down brakes. The figure continued on the track, and the engineer finding it impossible to check the speed of the train, went out upon the ecoweatcher and grasped the man, as it proved to be. lifting him on to the coweatcher unhurt. He was a deaf mute, named Lave, and the gratitude of the poor fellow, when he saw the danger from which the bravery of the engineer had rescued him, was fully displayed by the most emphatic gestures. His brother also a deaf mute, had been tun over and killed about a year ago. IL Mr. Everett is not a newspaper writer, and never can be. W all his immense talent he could not make a daily paper live six months, un- less said paper was sustained by means outside of its legitimate income. The same remark will ap- ply to Washington Irving, Longfellow, and all the other well-known literary gentlemen in this country. The least readable daily paper in this country is the one published in Burlington by Saxe. the wittiest poet in Vermont. Saxe is a wit, scholar, and a man of genius, and yet he could no more make a readable newspaper than he could overturn the Pyramids. I> Papers from towns on the Upper Mississip- pi river, and on the borders of Missou and Iowa, report persons passing through daily, en route Pike's Peak. One of a party ofemigrants wri from Fort Kearney, says that large herds of lo have made their appearance along the Platte river, near that post. They were therefore boun- tifally supplied with meat; cern was worth six dollars per bushel at the fort. As barley has head- ed out, and grass is high enough to mow In Texas, it Is inferred that the season for grass will be un- usually early farther north on the plains. I" The latest case of Biddyism is chronicled by the Greenfleld (Mass.) Gazette. An Irish girl was despatched to a neighbor's with a note, and directed to give it personally to the person ad- dressed. On her arrival, Biddy yd that the neighbor had gone to Northampton, whither she wended her way. 12 miles on foot, and traversed the streets till she found the individual and deliv- ered the note. She then started to return, stepping over night on the way with some friends, and reached home nextday. when she told her m she must give up her place, for she could net yo any more on such long errands. Tug St. Nicnotas Cowract at ax Exp.—The New York Tribune of yesterday says: The St. Nicholas compact bet the four great routes to the West has been broken up. and there will, no doubt, now be an active competition for the tratfic between the two sections of the country. and lower prices for the business which now pays but little 1f any profit. Mr. Moran. being satistied that the agreements made between the roads were being daily vielated, sent written notice yesterday to Messrs. Garrett. ‘Thompson and Corning. that be no longer considered himself bound by the ar- rangement IL Scientific men assert that there is an inti- mate connection between the nerves and muscles of the face and eyes, and allowing the beard to grow strengthens the eye. It is said thatsurgeons in the French army have proved, by experiment, in Africa, that soldiers wearing the beard aré much less liable to disease of the eye, und it Is generally conceded that it Is a protection from diseases of the throat and lungs. 117" The steam propeller, Baltimore. the pioneer ofa regular line of steamers between Baltimore and Havana, was sunk in Chesapeake Bay, on Tuesday evening, by coming in contact with the steamer Patapsco, and another veasel.
