About half-past nine o’clock a large con- course of eltizens, headed by the full Marine Band, marehed to Brown’s Hotel, where Gen. Joseph Lane, Senator elect from the State of Oregon, is stopping. After several stirring airs had been executed by the band, Gov. Stevens, of Wasbington Territory, appeared apon the bal- cony and introduced Gen Lane, who briefly ad- dressed the assembiaye. as follows: Gentlemen and fellow-cilizeas: With all my beart | thank you for this manifestation of your high sense of (be importance of the admission of Oregon. Another State has been admitted into the Union, and you have the kindness to come and rejoice with me. We have cause to rejoice Our whole country has cause of gratulation; for, tm my judgment, the admission of Oregon isa great event—a national blessing; and | look upon this day’s work as the greatest Congress has ever performed It is anevent for which I bave for months labored with all the energies of my na- ture. I did everything within my power to pro- eure action upon the bill for our admission at the last session; and daring the present sexsion, until to-day, | have Inbored most assiduously and earnestly for this great purpose. Often, indeed, have [ entertained serious fears for the result; but the important measure was in the hands of Ste- phens, the eminent statesman and patriot, aud t.ost nobly, gallantly has he discharged bis duty. Ous hopes have been crowned with success; and Ocegon is one of the States of our grand Union Another link ia the chain that binds the States together has been added, and is in «very way cal- enlated to add strength and stability to the bonds of union connecting these States together. A bul- wark has this day been raised on the rock-bound ite against foreign javade:s, aad e bas given for the perpe u- Oregon has been settled by the hardy and the enterprising from every sec- tion of the country; and I feel sure that ber sons will recognize no North, no South, no Kast, no West ia the fulfillment of tueir duties as citizens of the whole Union. Twenty States bave been added to the confed- eracy since the establishment of our Independ- ence, and It is gratifying to know that each and every owe of them have been admitted under Democratic edministrations, or by a Democratic Congress We now have two States on the Pa- cific coast, and, ere long, we will have the Ter- ritory now represented by my worthy and tal- eated friend, Gov. Stevens—who has had the kindness to introduce me to you in so handsome a manner—knocking at the doors for admission ; then we will have our paitioa of the Pav ificcoast organized into States, to further strengthen the bonds of union Now, my friends, although a man of iron, 1 have been so constantly on duty, laboring day and night to bring about this giorjous result, that I find myself worn out; and, for once in my life, in need of rey I will, therefore, intro- duce to you my friend, Mr. Voorbees, U.S Dis- friet Attorney of Indiara, a young ventieman who has made more speeches in ge 4 oe of Deme- erat c principles than any man of bis age. He was succeeded by D W. Voorhees, Exq , U_3. District Attorney for the State of Indiana; Hon. M. H. Nichols, of Ohio; Senator Green, of Missouri; ion. Charles L. Scott, of California ; Hon Joba Leteber, of Virginia, aud others, who made short congratulatory speeches, which were Teceived with great enthusiasm by the crowd A procession was then formed and the line of march taken up forthe White House, and the whole space in front of the porch was « ly Sued by an immense throng = ‘The President, in response to repeated calls, appeared at a win- dow. He presumed, he said, from this handsome demonstration, that the Oregon bill had passed It bad not yet come to him, but when it did be rather thought he should not veto tt. He sin. cerely congratulated them upon the advent of another sovereign State iuto the glorious confed- eracy of republics—a State, too, situated on the very shores of the Pacific, favored with a fine chmate, an exuberant soil, aad filled with tried and noble Democrats, The elevation of General Lane, who had proved himself a gallant so!dier ia war, and a great statesman in peace, was also # fit subject for rejoicing. It was an honor that that he wad fairiy deserved by his exertions to bring this new Scate into the Union. Expansion was ia fature the policy of our country; cowards atone feared und opposed it. A number of these uoruly chaps are in the practice of annoying Mr. McDonnal ——— shoema- ker, who keeps a shop a short distance north of the Northern Liberties’ market house. Fifth District —Very little business bas been done at this oilice during the last and present month, althongh some warrants have beet issued and judzments rendered for proved violations of the city ordinances Probibiting forestailing, street nuisances, the sale of spirituous liquors, ale and porter, and withont license In the cases of forestalling, the defendants (Mallard and Black) employed an able member of the bar to make their defence, but he failed to convince Justice Thompson that the defendants had not rendered themselves lable to the penalty of $10 and costs, which were imposed in both cases. From the decision of the magistrate an appeal has been taken in the case of Malinrd, and it is jatimated by the connsel of Black that he too will appeal. It will not be a matter of regret, we learu, tothe Fifth district Police magistrate that bis decisions in these cases should undergo athorough investigation before the Circuit Court, for the legal points made in the defence are of an tant characte: alike interesting to our id the keepers of provision stores, now become numerous all over the city.
