Sairusontan Lectuges — Professor Caswell delivered bis third lecture on Astronomy, last night, at the Smithsonian; the branch of the sub- Ject treated of being planetary distances. The distances of the heavenly bodies from the earth are computed on precisely the same principle that the width of a river is ascertai without actual measurement in the case of a river a base line is measured off on one side of it and a triaagle struck with this by an instrument on the other side. This triangle is resolved and the width of the river ascertained as accurately as if it bad been measured across with a chain—in fact much more so, as the measurement by es fablishing and resolving the triangle is perfect, While the other must be subject to more or less fmaceuracy. This triangle, in reference to beav- euly bodies, is called the paralax of the Tespect- ive body, aud the computation the resolving of the paratax. The first effort that bad ever been to ascertain the distance ofa mag tog | body was in the case of the sun and moon, by to- tle, 3u0 years before the Christian era. ing to operate with the naked eye, without the aid of the perfected mathematical instruments of later times, be had avatled himself of the changes of the moon, making his observations at full and at balf moon. In this way he computed the se- lative but not absolute distances of the sun and Moen, makiag tbat of the sun nineteen times greater than that of the moon. Although the Prigeiple upon which the compntation was baxed ‘Was correct, the computation Itself was far from Might, the real distance of the sun being about four burdred times that of the moon. The ab- solute distance of the moon from the earth is es- timated at 247,000 milex, and of the sun 95,000,000 The absolute distance of the sun from the earth had always been considered the grandest prob- lem; and the transits of Veous across the sun were considered the most favorable opportuni- tiex knowa to astronomers of computing this dis- tance correctly. The transits of 1761 and 1769, bad been the most important and interesting eras in astronomical science. Ou those occasions the governments of England, France and Russia, had sent scientific men to all parts of the world for the purpose of making observations of the transit These observations had been exchanged and classified, and now present the vest basis of astronomical calculations The opposition of the planet Mars bad also added tothe data of @stronomical calculations, but has not given as satisfactory results as the transit of Venus. ‘The Bext transit of Venus is estimated to take place Ou the Sth of December, 1574, and scientific men pene | talking of preparations to make the mast out of the event. Adjourned Discnaxceo —Ourcitizens generally feelde p ly interested on account of the position which some two bundred@ mechanics are placed in by tue discharge on the day before yesterday, from the new Capitol works, on account of the appro- priation for their construction being exhausted A large number of these men are hard working cltizens of Washington, who have their fami- ties to support by their daily labor, and who, by the giving out of the Government work, are de- prived in the middle uf winter of the means of support. We learn that a commi'tee of ‘bree of the discharged workmen paid a visit to Secretary Floyd on Wednesday morning with a proposal from the discharged bands to be allowed to re- sume work on credit, and trust to chances for thetr pay, rather than remain for several mouths idle. The Secretary beard the delegation with hearty expressions of sympathy with their trou- bles, promising to do every thing in bis power to assist them in their end: avors to obtain work. He promised to communicate with Capt. Meigs upon the subject of their proposal, and let them know the result on Saiurday. Cineuit Covrt.—Yesterday, the Court was engaged with the case of Young & King agt. Kitter & Haines, in which action is brought for the recovery of the value of a boat load of wheat lost in December, 1357, in the Potomac river du- ring & freshet. The wheat, belongiag to the laintiffs, was shipped at Edwards’ Ferry on rd a canal boat belonging to the defendants, who were uaableto steer the boat by reason of the current, and it struck on a rock and was crushed, the cargo, of course, being lost. Plain- tiffs lay damayes on the alleged yround of bad management of the boat; and the defence is, that the boat was uncontrollable aud beyoud the power to save it or the cargo. The jury returned a verdict for the defendants. ‘The court then took up the case of Doe dem Jobn W. Massey agt. Barcey anv THE AUTHOR oF “ UncLE Tom's Cazin.”—The Macacheeh Press, a Re- publican paper published in Obio, comes down upon the Beecher family, individually and col- lectively, for their selfishness; and in so doing, states the following in relation to Mrs H. B- Stowe’s last story, illustrative of New England life, now being published in the Atlantic Montbly: “This last work bas a were f more illustrative yet of the Beechers’ mean seltishness. It was a to Doctor Bailey, of the National Era. Jar readers will recollect that the Era first gave Uncle Tom its rum of popularity. Since then, and since the premise made by Mrs. Harriet Beecher, certains facts have come to her knowl- edge. She ts well aware that Dr. Bgiley ts in a state of health so delicate—indeed precarious— that fears are entertained as to his power to strug- gie throng the winter. She knows that he is called upon to contend with pecuniary embar- Tassments, caused by an attempt to publish a daily paper tn Washington, and increased by the commercial distress of the last two years. One would suppose that a woman under such circumstances, would have bastened, with a full beart, to the relief of her fast friend and patron Not so with Mrs Beecher Stowe. Sue very qui- etly drives a bargain with the Atlantic Monthly, and very coolly gives that journal what in jus- tice she owes elsewhere.” Tue W£EaTHER.—Range of the thermometer for one week, beginning at noon of Thursday, January 27, and ending this morning: Morning. It is next toim- possible for a team with an ordinary load to pass on some of the streets; and in order to f° safely from Capitol Hill to the Navy-Yard, vehicles are frequently obliged to take a circuitous route, and the time of the trip is extraordinary. The rest- dents of the Fifth and Sixth Wards deserve the syinpathy of their fellow-citizens of wards bet- ter provided for. No doubt they would see a manifestation of it if the yd Were in a proper financial condition to relieve them; but the flnan- ces are in such a condition that very little in the way of improvement has been done under the orders of the present Mayor.
