That's good!” The magistrate, upon hearing the evidence, heid that Murphy, under the circumstances, was te- sponsible for his daugbter’s acts, and committed the defendant to jail to await the action of the criminal court On Saturday night, Conrad Fausnauht got deunk and went into the Northern Liberties Mar- ket-Louse, where be behaved in a very disorderly manner,to the great annoyance of the people during market hours. He was tuken before Jus- tice Williams, who, upon hearing the evidence, imposed a fine of $5 and 91 cents costs. George Smith A Suspicious l4PLeMENT.—Saturday night, Watchmen Robert King and Rabbit discovered a smail crowbar, such as ix used by burglars for prying open doors or windows, &c , and by them called a ‘‘ sheepfoot”* or “ jimemy,’? under a rain utin front of Deile’s restaurant, on Seventh stfeet, nearthe Northern Market The watch- men kept a lookout upon it, and about midnight twe young men went to the spot, and one of them, named J. Ennis, took it. The watchmen imme- diately arrested bim, and his pertner ran Ennis was taken tothe guardhouse. The next morning the justice dismissed Ennis, there being no evi- dence upon which to hold him. The circum- stance of having the “ jimmy’? at such a time of the night, and concealed in such a place, was suspicious, but nothing could be proven that would justify a commitment. Tuat was a Rack —Ou Saturday afternoon ss the trein which left Washington at 34 o'clock neared Beltsville, a man was discovered mount- ed upon a mule, riding close alongside the track As the train approached the mule became fright- ened at the iron borse and very gracefully tossed its rider in the mad, and then commenced a race as Wasarace. The passengers entered into the excitement. and odds were freely offered on the iron horse with but few takers, and amid the shouts of “go it horse,” ‘‘go it mule,” the race was prolonged for two miles, when flesh and blood was compelled to “cave,”’ and the mule came toa stand still from pure exhaustion. A sporting | doi 5 by our side, who bad his watch in hand during the progress of the race, remarked it to have been the best time on record. Balt. Clipper. Tar Taeatre.— We are glad to see that man- ager Stuart has succeeded in making the Washb- ington theatre a place of the highest fusbionable resort. The audience on Saturday evening was large, and to the highest degree respectable. Among the metropolitan celebrities present we noticed Senator Gwin and family, and Senator Douglas and family, and several other Senators and members of the House. The performance was weil carried through, and called forth the hearty approbation of the audience. The bill for to-night Is the classic drama of Medea, (peculiarly adapted to Miss Davenport's fine classical tases and accomplishments,) and the after piece of the Debutante. Maaistrate’s Fexs —We learn that a move- iment is about to be made by some of the acting magistrates of this city to induce Congress to modify the law under which they act, with re- spect to those United States cases which come before them for which they receive no pay. As the law now stands, the magistiate gets no fee for his services in United States cases except in cases of felony, and in all other cases where the United States is concerned they are compelled to farnish United States warrants, summons, com- mitmeuts, releases, bonds, search warrants, and to hear and determine all such cases brought before th without any compensation therefor, and furnisis besides, at their own expense, office room, blanks, ete. A Coin Bath —Yesterday afternoon, a man in & very latoxteated condition, was noticed lying on the south side of the Canal, near the Smithso- nian grounds,but he being out of the way and dis- turbing no one, he was allowed toremain. Last night he got up and tried to reach the north side of the Canal, but missing the track walked over- board. After yeliing and splashing about in the mad and water, he was relieved by two of the watchmen, who conveyed him to the guard- house.
