Portey anp Woman —This was the subject of a lecture at the Smithsonian Institation, last night, by Dr. £. ¥ Reese, editor of the Metho- dist Protestant, Baltimore. The audience was large and appreciative. The lecturer commenced by saying that the Rev. Dr. Plummer, ina lec- ture before a young ladies’ Institute in heel. ing, Va., said to the principal: ‘Sir, I hope that you will not undertake to te poetry here. any of your young ladies are gifted with the divine afft: and it will come forth, let it come, but do not undertake to force it. Like shouting at church, it should no: be practised from a sense of duty merely, but should be spon- taneous and without effort.’ The lecturer said he agreed with the eminent divine, as well as with the ancient philosopher, that poeta nasci- tur, mom fit, that a poet is born, not made. His design in selecting this subject was not to per- suade young ladies that they must all become poets in order to be true women, but to put them and their brethren in the pos the udying and appreciating true poetry, a: Profiting by its beautiful teachings. aziitt called man a po- etical animal. It wastrue that every man had More or less of the poetic feeling about him, Which might be defined as a state of intense in- ibility, but the pong to transfer poetic ht to poetic diction, and thereby commu- Bleate the feeling to others, was rare. The gross Materiality of the age, speeulation and money- making, had in a great measure stifled the spirit of poetry in the world. The busy, bustling, money-seeking crowd looked upon the poet, as they jostied bim in the street, as an idle dream- er. So did the inmates of insane asylums look forth upon the world, and consider every body crazy but themselves. The true poet wax the sanest and i of men. Truth was bis sentiment and bis practice—truth to nature and the noble destiny of ma The “ measured file and metrical array” of words did not consti- tute try; neither did the strained jingle of la- thyme. Unless there was poetry in the and the sentiment, no arrsy of words ake amends. The lecturer spoke ef the affectation of would- be s, sighing for impossible things the sen- sible man and true poet would sbrink from Milton was a true poet, the majeaty of whose diction was in keeping with the sublim 'y of his thought. Shakspeare, in his career asa success- ful ywright, had coined into words the true Poetry of Nature, in almost every department of life. A true poet, placed in companionship with common men, was a great blessing. He was a high priest in the Sanctuary of Nature. he lecturer eloquently recited several choice pieces from Tennyson, Longfellow, and Mrs. Brown- ing. It was true, as Haslitt bad said, that man Was a poetic animal; bat his most Poetic mood was when struck by the tender passion; when laboring undef the inspiration of woman. The lover was always a poei—and the poet always a lover, for the true man, which a true poet must » is never Insensible to the magic power of bright eyes, ruby lips, and graceful ringlets. The Troubadours were a race of poets, inspired by woma®, ali along the line. The lecturer, referring particularly to the sub- Ject of Woman, said it must be confessed that ber domestic relations were not always the most orable for the cultivation of the fine arts. Still she has her peculiar sphere of feminine. Power. He was not in favor of this Amazonian doctrine of women’s right-ism. He did not con sider thiz the right way for woman to achieve her highest destiny. Sbe bed ber natu sphere to operate in, from which she could not depart without fajury to herself About the relative capacity of the sexes for improvement much had been said and written to no purpose. The term great was Ungerer 3 cnt pre to men and their achievements, He thought that there were cases where it iaigbt properly be applied to women and their works of genius and of love. There was Caroline Herschell. who had a capacity of mind to estimate the distances between the spheres, and revel at ease in the realms of space Lady Jane Grey, Joan of Arc, Florence Night. ingale, and hosts of ether heroic women who might be mentioned had certainly achieved deeds ofgreatness. The lecturer ment oned some women who had excelled in poetry, among them Joanna Baily and Mrs. Hemans. He paia a glowing tribute to the poetic genius of Mra Browning, whom he considered a Christian Poetess in the fullest sense of the term. He re- elted several of her ms, among them a part of the Chiid’sery for Bread. The lecturer showed bis own appreciation of true poetry in the choice selection of gems and flowers that he bad made for the entertainment of his audience. Ustne a Powogr Kas ror Kixpiinc Wou Yesterday morning a friend of ours, who is bookkeeper in an Avenue wholesale store, feel- lag rather chilly, undertook to build a roaring fie Ima blurry. He succeeded! Looking about for dry foel, his eye rested on what he took for &a empty powder cask, and which struck him as exactly the thing. He accordingly crammed it Jato the fire, drew his coat tails under his arms, and Lacked up, a8 near as possible, to the genial best. Iu about the shaking of a lamb’s tail, however, @ tremendous explosion took place, our friend was thrown forward with a violent jerk, and frightened nearly out of bis wits; he inude worm-feace tracks for the door, to dodge the sbower of bricks, which be thought might be traveling in bis direction. The cask, it is sup- posed, was not entirely empty, though, fortu- nately, not enough remained to do serious dam- age. Our friend, after satisfying bimseif that the worst was over, resumed bis piace at his ledger; but it was noticeable that the entries thereia, for some hours after the explosion, were written with a Stephen Hopkin. iai-like scrawl, in place of the usual bold hand of the book- keeper.
