All that is wanting to perfect this link, to enable passengers to take the cars in Washing- ton city and pass by railroad to almost any part South or Southwest, is to authorize the Alexandria and Washington Railroad Company, (French's road, as it is called,) at their own cost, without one dollar from the Government, to strengthen and improve the present bridge over the Potomac and remodel its draws. ‘There can be no reasonable objection to this, the opinion of the Union. During this interview four great thoroughfires were under consideration othe fivst_to obtain tmission from Congress to put the Potomac bridge in sub- stantial condition, and extend the line of rails across, connecti with the enter rising road, which proves to be of such vast uti ity, from the bridge, and thence through to Alexandria. Some of them bave been wealthy, have occupied bigh positions in the communities where the resided, were esteemed for their talents an moral deportment. But falling into the snare of the temper, we now find them occupying by charity, the cells constructed for the criminal; upon a level with the vagrant and pauper; bud- died together upon the brick floor around the stove In the guard. house, like Logs in a pen; @ lot of miserable, degraded victims of an uncon- treliable appetite. ‘Tux TueatRe —On account of the extreme in- clemency of the weather, last night, the drama entitled “The Poor of New York,” was present- edto rather a slim house.
