A COUPLE OF CALIFORNIA TRAGE- pies. THE CHESS CONTEST. Morray Bears Anp N.—The match between these players has terminated in favor of Mr. Morphy, who won seven games to An- derssen’s two and two drawn. The result of pst pipe certainly places Mr. wetry at the head of all chess-players, and henceforth he will be regarded as the champion. Herr An- derssen is a professor of mathematics in one of the gymnasiums at Breslau, and ranks among the very foremost of European chess-players. He carried off the first prize in the London Chess Tournament held in 1851, against Szen, Mayet, Harwitz, Staunton and others. in the mateh between Mr. Morphy and Mr. Anderssen, says Galignani, the latter gentle- man in the course of the last two or threedays’ play, an additional which escay our notice, so that the final score was this: Mr. Morphy seven, and Mr. Anderssen two. It is impossible not to dwell with unmixed satisfac- tien on the frank and loyal manner in which both the players commenced, continued, and terminated their contest. They agreed ver- The San Francisco Bulletin, of Dec. 11th, says: About 4 o'clock, Saturday evening, Patrick Duon, who lives next door to 0’ Dowd’s store, heard the Doctor are heavily. Dunn imme- diately went to the door of the shop, but not seeing any one stirring he broke it open, and crossing to the rear room, found the Doctor lying upon the bed, a lifeless corpse. Dunn informed officer Sayward, who sent for Coroner McNulty and Dr. Gray. They came down and found an empty vial which had contained russic acid, lying at the head of his bed. The Pilowing letter, which had evidently just been written, lay on one of the show-cases in the shop: sty Dear Da: I am suffering from an- other attack, and from its severity, it is likely to prove fatal. I have been taking the acid as usual, and it occasions such disagreeable sen- sations that I have resolved to discontinue it, at all events until I at which I hope will be as soon as possible. am, my dear tor, | bally to play according to the ordinary rules yours, ete., of the game until one of the combatants was ‘°° * James J. The de- ceased was an Irishman, a graduate and licen- tiate of Trinity College. Dublin, and the Col- lege of Surgeons. He had liyed in this country for the last six years, and was aged 55 years He leaves no wife nor family. The Sacramento Union of Dec. 10th, contains the following : The city was thrown into a state of consider- able excitement, yesterday morning, from a report that David Wand, who resides on Fifth street, near N, had first shot his wife and im- mediately afterwards himself, in consequence of an discovered her in criminal inti- macy with an individual —— high posi- tion in the Stato Government. It soon trans- pired that the wife was uninjured by the shot, and the husband was still living, al- though the ball from the pistol had passed through the roof of his mouth and lodged in the back of the skull. At a late hour last night, it was supposed he would recover from the wound. In order that no imputation should rest upon an innocent party, it may be proper to meation that the officer of State whose name is connected with the affair is A. R. Meloney, State Controller. It appears that not more than ten or fifteen minutes after Mr. Wand’s attempt to destroy himself, he sent to the Union office, in order to be published, a statement to the public, anda bundle of love-letters, which had passed be- tween his wife and a man named Edward Ly- man Warren, who resided in New York, and who appears to have been criminally intimate with her. The following is a part of Wand’s utes’ conversation, down they sat, and played on, day after day, until the match was brought toaconclusion. This was the way in which Labourdonnais and Macdonnell were accus- tomed to enter on their brilliant encounters, and such is the grand principle on which all contests in the noble game of c! ought to be conducted. In these latter years a different system has been insisted on, and, we regret to Say, the difficulties have proceeded from Eng- land, for the match between MM. Staunton and St. Amant, there was as much preliminary negotiation as would have sufficed for regu- lating the government of a province, and when at last the games were played, two sec- ends were to be seen at each side, as if for a prize-fight. It is to be hoped, that for the fu- ture, ihe match just i? a between MM. Mor- phy and Anderssen, will serve asa precedent, and that the masters of the game will consent to enter upon their friendly combats for cham- pionship, without a multitude of conditions, which are as humiliating as they are unneces- sary. in conclusion, we have to state that M. An- derssen returns in a day or two to his duties as Professor of Mathematics at the College of Breslau, carrying with him the esteem of all the Paris players, both for his great skill in the game and fur his frank, straightforward bearing during his flying visit. Mr. Morphy, says the Illustrated News of the World, may now fairly take rank as the champion of the Oid World az well as the New No Englishman is found to do him battle, and every foreigner of note has now, with the ex- ception of Der Luja, fallen an easy prey to the youthful conquerer. It isa question whether he be not the finest player to whom the world has yet given birth. see Treascre axp Lirk.—Among the incidents, related by the Columbus ((a.) Sun, as occur- ring atthe late railroad disaster near there, are the following: One passenger, when he discovered some- thing was wrong with the cars, laid a hold of his carpet bag, in which was his money, a mumber of valuable papers and clothing, and he held bis until he had floated some two hundred verte down the creek ; when finding, from its accumulated weight, that one of the two things was inevitable, that either life or his treasure had to go; he tet at loose, aad soon found the shore. Mr, Fickeiberger, of Miss., had fifteen hun- dred “dollars in bank bills in a roll in a pocket of his pants, and the pocket pinned up ; but in the scramble for life in the stream, a naughty limb had to thrust itself into, his pocket, tip- ping it open, and discharging its contents into thestream. He also had sixteen hundred dol- lars in gold, belt around his body. SS A Necro Sextinet.—Theodore Parker, in & recent lecture on Washington, at Boston, re- | seaeay the following anecdote, related to him y an old soldier, who vouched for its truth: At Cambridge, Gen. Washington bad heard that the colored soldiers were not to be depend- ed upon for sentries. So one night when the password was ‘Cambridge,’’ he went outside the camp, put on an overcoat, and then ap- proached a colored sentinel, ‘‘Who goes there?” cried the sentinel. *‘A friend,’’ replied Wash- ington. ‘Friend. advance unarmed, and give Pustie.—When my wife came to California, immediately after her arrival, I d scovered a correspondence between her and a man from Ohio. His name was Lyman, al- though he signed all letters E. W., and the let- ters that [ got from my wife, sent to him, were addressed to Edward Warren. By these letters ~ 1 discovered that my wife lived in New York with this map as man and wife. Taey put my cbild, in the meantime, in a convent. I for- gave her, and tried to forget it for the sake of my child, although she never ted meas a wife should treat a husband. A. R. We lived unhappily to- — and last Spring separated, after which went to board with the father of Miss Grant for a short time, and of course became better acquainted with her. In a short time I went into the jewelry business, and in my travels I called often at her house. “Tis true I did think Miss G. a very fine girl, and still do; and judge you of my surprise, during one of my calls, when she came to me and told me that she had been seduced by a bar tender from Massachusetts, and implored me to help her. I did make the attempt to do so,with the aid of an eminent physician in Providence. He did all he could, and failed to accomplish any- thing. I then toid Miss Grant that [ knew of but steps for ber to take—either to go home to her parents or fiy with me. She chose the latter. I intended to procure a divorce and marry her, (aud do now if in my power,) but was prevented by her brother. The rest you know. He has made arrangements for the construction in Boston of a balloon with which he designs to make an attempt to cross the Atlantic next summer. The monoy is to be furnished by a wealthy gentleman of the modern Athens, who has sufficient confidencs in the practicability of the scheme to make a venture in it. The balloon is to be of silk, with an ascensive power which wiil make it capable of carrying & life-boat stocked with provisions and four passengers. The power it is designed to em- ploy is the gun-cotton engine—one of which, owned by a gentleman Springfield, Maes., has been tested. and found to operate satisfac- torily. Before the venture of sailing over the ocean, it is designed to make three long voy- ages, starting from Western cities, for the pur- pose of testing the capacity of the balloon and the effect of the employment of machioery. Mr. Wise, the “father of ballooning in Amer- ica,”’ who has been in consultation with Mr. La Mountain, approves of his plan in all its details, and will give him the benefit of his remarkable experience in suggestions as to the manner of carrying it out.— Troy Times, Lith. ARE THE WATERS OF THE GLOBE DECREAS txc.—M. Vincent maintains that the waters of the globe are gradually decreasing, foundin, his opinion on the fact that the vast deserts o' sand, mixed up with the salt and remains of marine animals, of which the surface of the globe is partly composed, were formerly inland seas, which have insensibly become dry. Ac- cording to M. Vincent, the Caspian, the Dead Sea, &e.; wi'l become dry in their turn, also, when their beds will be sandy deserts; and the inland seas, whether they have only one out- let, as the Mediterranean, the Red Sea, the Baltic, &e., or whether they have several, as the Gulf of Mexico, the seas of O’Kotsk, of Ja- pan, China, &c, will at some future time cease to communicate with the great basins of the ccean—they will become inland seas, true Caspians, and in due time will become like- wise dry. On all sides the waters of rivers are seen to carry forward in their course the soil of the continent. M. Vincent maintains, therefore, that there is an actual diminution of liquid matter. AParetrty Coxceit.—We yesterday saw, in the parlor of a friend, a very beautiful conceit It is, of course, the fancy of a lady, and con- sists of the burr of a pine tree placed in a wine lass half full of water, and from between the fitterent layers of the burr are shooting forth green bliades—bright, iful, refreshing. fora little thing, we have seen nothing that #0 pleased us by its beauty and novelty. And the secret is this: the burr was found dried and open; the different circles were sprinkled with grass seed, and it was placed in a wine glass, ater in asabove. In a few days the moisture and nourishment gave the burr life and health; the different circles closed and buried within themselves the grass seed, anda few days more gave to the seed also life, sprout and growth; and now a pyramid of living green, beautifully relieved by the sombre hue of the burr, is the result—as pretty and novel a par- lor ornament as we have fur a long while seen. We do not know whether the idea was original with the lady, but we do know that its success is beautiful —Troy Times Tar Wroxe Pew.—A correspondent of the Addison (New York) Advertiser, writing from Woodhull, gives the following incident as of a recent occurrence tu the Woodhull Brass Band: “They were invited to Jasper, to attend a lec- ture, and enliven it with their music. The lecture was to be at the meeting-house, and at the appointed time the band marehed up and proceeded to the gallegy. Finding a few gon tlemen and ladies occupying the seats bel they immediately struck up Yankee Doodle, very excellent tune and excellently played but singular!y inappropriate to the occasion. They hat broken in suddenly on the solemnities of a prayer meeting!
