ISG, 2 police cffice was established by act of the Corporation in the Northern Liberties, near the Northern Market, and & poliee magistrate and six police officers appointed. for the purpose of gueliing the rowdy spirit which had been rife iy that neighborhood for a considerable space, nd had become a subject of terror to the 'e jeving citizens thereabouts. By a judicious ad- inistration of the laws on the part of the mag- istrate appointed for this new police district, = .d ao impartial execution of their duties on the vert of the officers, acbange has been wrought which bas resulted as happily as could have been desired in all respec: The character of the Northern Liberties for law and order had become more than questionable, chiefly through the lawlessness of certain desperate characters, nuwstly strangers to Washington, whose watch- words and tallying cries were a terror to the people by day, and not unfrequently, whose fiendish acts made the night hours herrible by the death sbrieks of their victims. The busines community too, bad suffered deeply, and it was high time for something to be done, in order that tue safety of the people might be secured ast the robber's bludgeon, and the assassin’s y knife ree consid into effet the late police act of the Corporation, whicu ied to the establishment of the Northern Liberties’ police station. and the piacta determined officers and an unflinching mayistrate lu charge of the same, was an e; poe ls ju this portion of the city which bad the effect, after a somewhat protracted struggle between the officers and the rowdy stranvers to displace disorder and misrule and establish in their place erder and decorum. A postion of the leading evil spirits were detected in their villainy and summarily puaished ; others ted to tind refuge in other cities, and the remainder, if any there ‘Was, Were Wise cnough to come toa pariey and succumb to the laws. During the struggle, the workhouse, the jail and the penitentiary, Lave a!! received considerable accessions, and the Corpo- ration has pocketed seme $2,000 in fines and costs Tux Teeatae.—Notwitbstanding the inclem- ency of the weather last nigbt, there was a good sized audience in attendance at the Theatre to enjoy the comedy of + Oid Heads and Young Hearts *’ The play was weil cast ard admirably performed, Mrs Julia Dean Hayne appearing to exerlient advantaye as Lady Alice Hawthorn. Dawson was dressed up within an Inch of bis iife, as Littleton Cooke, and made a first-rate yentieman. However, the audience felt that they bad lost more thaa they had pained, and boped soon *o see bita beck again in ie native element. Daw-on is @ favorite, here, that no star, elther masculine or feminine, comie or tragle, can eclipse. The publicowe bim a debt of gratiode for the good bealth that he has caused them, and no matter what the occasion or the surroundings, they never fail to manifest their favoritism when. ever be makes bis appearance. Charley Fisher makes an excellent Ligh comedian as well os tragedian, and we consider bis conception and execution of almost any leading ebaracter that be undertakes, much better than a good many stars who bave achieved a greater notoriety. By the way, we think that theatre managers would apna! their own interests by giving the public a large proportion of comedy. They get enough tragedy in real life, as they go alony. No tragedy, at any rate, should be tven with- out 4 good comic afterpiece Exquisite people may affect to prefer tragedy, as much as they picase, it is nothing more nor less than atfecta- t orelse a perverted and morbid taste. xen sible people, however retiaed, when they zo to the theatre, yearu for the comic; they waut to be tickled; tuey want to laugh, and do not consider it vuigar to do so—even at low comedy. Burton bas struck the popular veiu, and is inthe ; ig channel. Whether at home or abroad, be can draw a larger house than any other living actor And why? Simply because he makes folks laugh instead of cry. As we have said, People yet enough tragedy in real life—when they go thw theatre they want comedy.
