Among the business attended to, was the statement of the money expended by the Cor- —- since I®35, on the streets and avenues of ‘he city; which was referred to the joint commit- tee before Congress. And the report of the schools committee on the bill returned by the Aldermen to have amendments properly attached; which was ordered to be printed, and the report Sent to the Aldermen. In relation to the statement, it is very good, as far as it goes; but it was stated in the Counc | that it was incomplete, since it only shows the money expended for grading. graveling and gut- — io out the important item of ving. The following Ix the recapitulation, showing the amounts expended, from the ward funds and neral fund, since 1#35: ~ Cmantes A. Barnett received the Holy Com- Manion in the jail this morning, at the hands of Rev. Father O'Toole. He is resigned to the fate which awaits him on the morrow, and expresses no feeling as to the efforts of his friends before the Executive for a commutation of his sentence to imprisonment for life. It is thought by the guards at the jail that the effect of the respite granted him by the President two weeks ago, ‘was to give rise toalingering hope that he would not bave to suffer death but still he has given expression to no such feeling if he entertains any. The peculiar atrociousness of the crime of which he bas been convicted, and for which he will suffer death within the next twenty-four hours, cannot be easily forgotten by the people of this city, who have suffered in common, from the acts of ruffians and murderers within thu past two or three years PLeasant Gaturnines To-niont.—We trust our readers will not forget the pleasant times promised at Island Hall, to-night, by the Mount Vernon Association. Those who pass the night with them may be sure of a glorious time. The Forward Club also come forward to-night with a proposition to insure a pleasant night for such of the Star’s readers—that is, every one in the city—who may visit them at Stott’s Hall this evening The “Forwards” are never backward in festivity, and those who want fun could do nothing better than “trip it on the light fantas- tie toe’’ under their auspices. 3328 13 91.416 21 Tue Orrmans’ Covrt.—At the last Court day 4 71.692 93 | three administrators who bad failed to settle Fitth Ward.. 38,151 36 | their accounts, were attached by the Court to in- Sixth Ward. 21,7 2 | sure their prompt attention to these matters ac- = 31,575 85 | cording to law = This mode is, no doubt, very eral Fund... 1 mortifying to those whom it affects, and this notice of it may save others from its operation. The accumulation cf important business in this Court. renders it necessary that the business sbould be attended to, and Judge Purcell seems determined that it shall be. Since 1935 the boundaries of the wards have been changed. The report on the school bill was read and met the unanimous approbation of the Board. The report gives a history of the school bill, in sub- stance, as follows: The bill passed the Aldermen on September 20th, and was taken up in this board on the 27th. Upon examining the bill as it came to this Board, it was found to be made up of printed newspaper slips, pasted oa paper, with marginal smendments and alterations, so iucongruously put together as to render it almost unintelligible, One section was stricken out en- trely, and then, ‘on a sober second thong ht,** directed by a marginal note to b> inserted. This Board being unable to act on the bill in this con- dition, it was referred to the Committee on Pub- lic Schools, and ordered to be printed in bill form. This was done, and on the Lith of Octo- ber it was reported with amendments, read a third time and passed. An Officer, this morning, (not @ police officer, by the by,) informed us that en incident of this sort occurred last night. A ball ‘was going on somewhere last night, apd a Ger- man, who had an Irish wife, had embtaced the opportunity of baving a waltz with one of his pets country women without the knowledge of is spouse. But uvfortunately, he stepped out of the ballroom, probably to order up the usu:l drinks. When not far from the door he was bor- rifled by the sight of his offended deme, who, fusbing forward, seized him by the collar, ex. claiming, in a tone indicative of violent tage, “Och ! yer bia’gard ; an I've cot yez, has 1? GroRcRTowN, Nov. 4. 1458. The following statement shows the operations of our police for the months of August, Septem- ber and October: Whole number of persons ar- rested and taken to the watch house for disturb- ing the peace, &c., and who came in for lodging, 3:7. The places of their nativity are as follows: Georgetown 21, New York 8, Pennsylvania 2, Massachusetts 4, New Jersey3, Washington oy 7, Virginia 3, Maryland 9, Vermont 5, Eng 4 Ireland 281, Germany 2, Poland 1, Wates 1, ~ land 4, Canada 1, colored 25 Whole amount of fines imposed for the same period, for violations of law. #534 31. Of tats amount $231 66 has been collec and prid into the corporation treasury; le ving to be collected a balance of $299 65 Most of this amount, we learn, bas been superseded the parties upon whom the fines were im \. According to the annual report of thee: ition clerk, W. Laird, Exq., laid before the ncils in January last, the sum total of all the fines made for the year 1857 only amounted to $116 72. The foregoing certainly argues well for the new police system, and proves, conclusively, its su- Periority over the cid and inefficient one which i: superseded We learn that the late beavy rains bave fur- nished the upper — of the canal with an sbundant supply of water, and that quite a large ficet of laden boats are now on their way down. As there is now no probability of any deficienc occurring again during the present we think it more than likely, from all we can lear: that the trade between this and the closing of navigation that trade over it will be unusually beavy It seems that the underground railroad, or some other similar process of transportation bas been again put in operation to deprive our citizens of their property. On Sanday night ast, a valua- bie slave belonging to Mr. Jobn M. Williams, suddenly disappeared, and his not ween heard since : Quite a number have gone the same way this fall. Arrivals.—Schr. ALEXANDRIA, Va., Nov. 4, 1838. The City Councils were called together last night. Inthe Board of Aldermen no quorum appeared. In the Common Council, John Summers, pres- — pro tem., the following business was trans- acted : The finance committee, to whom was referred the -ommunication of W C. Reynolds, late col- lector of taxes for 1814, made a ordering the account to be cloned, and directing the trus- ters to reconvey the remainder of the Property in accordance with the trust; adopted. The finance committee, to w ‘was referred the resolution. asking for the indebtedness of the Alexandria Canal Company, reported the indebt- edness of principal and interest to the Ist of Sep- tember, bss, to be over $140,000, and recom- mended that additional securities for loans be required by the City Council; adopted. communication was read from the President of the Alexandria Canal Company, asking for a farther loan to place the Potomac Aq uct in good order for next season; the communication was received, and the Board ndjourned A very beavy ager of a a ro during the entire of yesterday; business, considerabl inconvenienced, was quite brisk Among the marriage licenses granted by the clerk of the County Court on Monday last, was one to a party then and now in the County Jail, awaiting trial on the charge of borse stealing. We bave not heard whether the marriage was solemnized The dead ery the man which was found on the beach at Rozier’s Biuff,on T.
