Tux Lecrors Last Niout —The lecture be fore the Catholic Total Abstinence Society, which took place last evening at Philharmonic Hall, ‘was the occasion of calling together one of the largest and most Intellige: been assembled in our ci: Giscourse ralongtime. The as we had anticipated, a rare in- tellectual treat, and the style of delivery plens. ‘ant. im jive, and entertaining. The lectnrer, Joseph S. Wilson, Exq , Chief Clerk of the Gen- eral Land Office, chose for his subject, “The developments and effects of moral causes upon the social coadition.”’ Leaving the beaten track usually followed by lecturers on similar occasions, Mr. Wilson first alluded to the degrading influence of the vice of drunkenness on the human family, and then gave # historical sketch of how it bad been regarded by the wise legislators of oldea time, from the days of Solon down toa period since the power of England has made her one of the leading na- tions of the world. By the most of these ess treated as acrime per se, and made punisbable as other crimes. Even in English law, it had once a place in the category of crimes, bein, Lapate there by the act of King James I; and it be! id it — until the statute was repealed by George Mr. Wilson next gave historical examples of the national calamities which were strictly at- tributable to indulgence in this vice; and in this connection introduced a beautiful analogy be- tween the moral and physical world. ‘This por- Uon of the discourse evincea deep research aud ‘eat philosophical thought. The latter portion of the lecture was devoted to encouraging the So- ciety in ite laudable efforts to eradicate intem- perance, and it was impressed upon them that the humble means a’ their disposal was no cause for abandoning the undertaking. The instance given by Thucydides of the Plague which rav- aged Athens ast the second Peloponnesian war, being arrested y the exertions of one man, Hippocrates, was brought forward as an illas- stration of what one single man ma effect; as were, also, the instances of the philanthropist, Howard; the apostle of temperance Father Matthew, and several other ce: lebrated charac- ters. {n conclusion, the lecturer sought to impress on bis anditors the extraordinary necessity there is for the citizens of this country to preserve themselves from the vice of intemperance, in order to maintain and transmit to their posterity the invaluable blessing of the free institutions under which we live. The lecture was listened to throughout with the strictest attention, and the au fence dis- persed bighly gratified with the instructive les- son they had received. Reticious Fzstivans.—To day, Is celebrated by the Catholic Church throughout the world, as the feast of All Saints, Saturday last having been kept as a solemn fast, in Preparation for it Though the festival of some Particular saint is celebiated almost every day, as the number of those who have been canonized greatly exceeds the days of the year, and as there are myriads reigning with Christ in Heaven, whose names are utterly unknown to men, this annual festivity in honor of all the blessed, hax been kept since ‘To-morrow, !s the commemoration of All Souls It is well known that Catholics believe that those who die in venal sins, or without having sufti- clently satistied God's justice for greater trans. gressions which He bas pardoned, are purified im & middle state called Pargatory, and that their term of suffering can be shortened by the prayers of the faithful. A day in every year Is therefore set apart for a remembrance of all the members ef the church who may be in this state of sulfer- ing. This is the occasion on which the tombs ef the ay ae are adorned with flowers and lights in New Orleans, and surrounded by kneel- ing crowds of borage yy The newspapers rad erroneously call it “All Suints,"’ con- founding with the previous day. Tax Taratre —The dramatic season will be resumed to-night with the accomplished artist and general favorite, John FE. Owens, who bas been retained for a few nights longer, in order, the play bills state, to present him in a number of the characters in which he has won bis great- est celebrity. The first of the series will be bis Jobp Unit, in Mrs. Bateman’s comedy of “ Self,”” an effort which we do not hesitate toc lass among the most powerful and brilliant ever witnessed upon the stage of an American theatre Itereated on its previous performance here a remarkable sensation, and its repetition for this evening only is in deference to populardesire The cast of the comedy is perhaps the strongest with which it bas vei been presented Embodying, as it does, an addition to the regular company of the ex-ab- lishment, the leading favorites of the Holliday Street Theatre force, Mr. HF. Daly. Mr J Har- tison, Mrs Muzzy, Mrs. Daly, and Miss Jennie Parker. Mr. J M. Dawson, and Messrs. Dawes, Tayleure and Proctor, of the regular company, also rinit The farce of “The Windmill,” with Mr. Owens as Dawson Lowe concludes. THE Gravinc oF tHe StREEts.—Mr. Ed- tor: I wish to ask the M ayer, as our ayent, paid to see the money of the tax-payers properly used, how it is that the graveling of the streets stand so badly’? We have one Well-graveled street (Fourteenth street, from I to Boundary,) all the others that | have noticed either from too much mixture of clay with the gravel, or not being rolled until so cut up with vehicles using one track in thecentre are nothing but dust in dry, and mud in wet weather. It would appear as if those employed to grade and gravel our streets were left to use material very unsuitable and then leave it unrolled to be cut in ruts, and thus the roads are but little better after than before the heavy expense the citizens are taxed with I would suggest the commissionrrs ought to know what sert of covering is best, and also able to judge when the work is Properly done. There as great lack of proper management, by which we all suffer. A Heavy Tax-Paver. Fasuions.—The changing seasons require di- verse garments, and the varying fashions shape those garments as best suit the Paris Jockey Ciub or whoever else in Paris that four thousand miles away declare in what costume a gentle- wan sball parade Penosylvania avenue, visit the or trip it through the delightful mazes of “Les Lancie:s.”” We do not object to this, and if we did it would make no surt of difference, for gentlemen would still continue to crowd the extensive model sairsrooms in Browns’ Hotel, and purchase the tonnish “belongings” that have long since established for Stevens a Teputa- tion second tono man in that business in the Union. Virginians from the Piedmont region will call there, expecially when they know tbat Deale—until aor the accommodating clerk of the City Hotel, Alexandria—js at Stevens’, ready there to receive and sopply their orders for all the “essentials to a cultivated exterior.”? STAIRWAY FoR THE NaTIonaL Cairo: —The Philadelphia Pennsylvanian gives the following description of a massive balustrade, just finished by Messrs. Archer, Warner, Miskey & Co »of that city, for the Capitol : “Itisa massive Piece of bronze work, truly original indesign. It was executed under the orders of Captain Meigs, the superintendent of tbe Capitol extension, and is designed for the Private stairway, inside the building, by which members ascend to the halls, four flights in length, making the balustrade one hundred and sixty-two feet. The balustrade contains seven main tgures—a buck at full s eed, a spread eagle, fall front, of the bald headed kind, a black eagle stooping, with raised wings and open talons, a boy recoiling from an irate rattlesnake, a Pigeon’s nest in a tree, with the young birds in it, acd the mother ascending to it, and two fine figures of Cupids, in different postures, among the scroll work These are on y the main figures. There are, all through the work, fine representations of the pine apple, rhododendron, Tose, lilac, cotton lant, tobacco plant, Indian corn, acacia, etc. be plants and figures are all modeled from life, and evidence great skill and rare fidelity to na- tue. The spectators were numerons, some of them, too, seeming to have designs upon the men. At least we thought so, this being “pay day.?? The review differed in no respect from the former ones—about balf-past ten the men formed in one rank, the police on the right, avd the guards and specials on the left. Afler some time employed in getting the line tolerably straight, the roll was called by Lieut. Thomas, and all answered save two or three who were sick. This being concluded, Mayor Berret, with the Chief of Police, appeared at the left of the line, and marched with a quick step to the right. ‘There they halted and faced about; the Mayor said something to the Chief which occupied some- thing over a minute; they then marched back to the left, and then went into his office. The po- lice formed in two ranks and marched through the west wing of the City Hall, and the parade was dismissed. The force looked very we! 1, and would have looked better if they had been more uniform in their positions in line. To some of them the reviews are not at all agreeable, they regarding them as folly. Sa.Lixe on Sunpay.—The Police, for a long time, have suspected that a certain well known Lager-beer Saloon was open regularly for busi- ness every Sabbath, in violation of law. They Lave tried to prove thrir charges against the pro- prietor frequently, but could never get the right witnesses. Last night, however, four young Germans were caged by the Guards for being drunk in the streets; and they, in their mortifica- ion, accounting for their misfortune, disclosed the secret that they had been at this Saloon du- ring the day and night, bad drank over-much, and hence their misconduct. The officers were not at all averse to hearing the disclosure, though the proprietors witl doubtless be displeased.
