SEE EEE eae Ciacuir Court —Yesterday, after our report closed, the appeal case of Messrs Humphreys & Juenemann was concluded This Layer-beer coatr which tuvolves lame interests to the Germaycelt zeus, may be summed up as fol. lows: Some two vears ayo, a German ni Rotzel, was toed for setling lager beer without lieense, and appealed trom the Magistrate's de- cision yg ey ramet 3 a pe at. torney, Mr. Morgan, took ¢ in ar- wmnent, that’ lener beer was Gotan intoxicating tink; aod that, therefore, there was no law to fine Rotzel; and, after bearing the evidence, whieb was very full, the Court so deeided. The Corporation leensable ; | roe & Juenemanun. who are manufacturers of ager beer were twice fined, they having refased to take out a license. Several grounds were taken by their counsel in these cases, one of which was that the warrants were defective on their faces— 2 ground in which the Court assented. But it Was agreed at bar, for the purpose of testing the question raised by fy par counsel, namely, whether the Corporation bad any right toimpose licease on the mannfacture:s, that one of the war- rants should be amended.’ After considerable argument uy) the warrant as a » the Court held that the amended City Charter of 4848 was no restriction or alteration of the Char- ter of 1820, but gave additional Powers, and that the Corporation bad the right to impose a license vpon the manufacture of every and any kind of erticle, if the same be sold in this city. The Court then considered the appeal case of Henry Rackaway rs RH. Trunnell, in which the jadgment of the mayistrate—H_ Reaver—was Feversed, and judgment de nove entered for the plaintiff for $17 S- and costs. In this case ft ap- red, from the evidence. that Rackaway en- rusted a judymeut for collection to Trunnell who is a constable, and soon afterwards fuund that the judgment had been paid, and wag in the possession of the original defendant, reyularly satistied. The defence was that Mr King, an other constable, collected the jadgment, ‘‘satisfied’ it, and that Trunnell not having Yeceived any portion of the amount, was not Hable. ft was also alleged for the defence, that it Was a case of malfeasance, and tha! the Proper action should bave been against the bondsmen of Trunnel!. The Court decided that King acted as the Kom of Trunueli, and that the latter was responsible, and accordingly gave judgment as above. F. W. Jones for appellant, Robt. Ould for ap ay, the Court is considering unimportant T appeal cases. Torrino ovr ENTER taInuent.—An entertain ment was given yesterday afternoon, to the hands employed upon the Church of St Aloysias, at the corner of K and North Capitol streets, the occa- sion being that of the completion of the walls and towers of the edifice, and the covering in of the building. The largest portion of the roof has been put on, and the church Presents a beantifal and noble appearance. The entertainment was given by Peter Gallant, Esq., the contractor aud superintendent of the work of erection. The edibles were provided by the popular caterers, Columbus & Nardon, and consisted of ever thing table and appetizing, and were partaken of y nearly one hundred persons who are engaged upon the work. The dinner was presided over by Rev. Father Stonestreet and Rev. Father Lynch of Georgetown College. After the hands bad been assigned their tions at table, an ap- Lae oe grace was said by Fatber Stonestreet. and the groaning tables were rapidly lightened of the load of well-cooked comestibles—such as oysters in various styles, beef steak, corned beef, ham, chicken, seasonable vegetabies, pies, and other substantials, surmounted by divers long- necked bottles, which were filled with something pleasant to the inner man—all of which were done ample justice to by the company. After the appetites had been completely sated, dives toasts were drunk, and some appropriate remarks made by Rev. Father Stonestreet, who proposed the bealth of the master bricklayer, Mr. Alfred Cas- sell; and then followed quite a lively time, during which a great many pretty speeches were made with reference to the occasion, and yood bumor and sobriety were the order of the day. After an hour in this manner, the tables were cleared away and all bands resumed work, well pleased with the pleasant episode of the afternoon. A full deseription of the church of St. Aloysius baving already beeu published in our columns, we do not deem it necessary to recapitulate or comment upon this bandsome structure, But simply to remark that it is oue of the most sub- stantial edifices in the country, and of a size commensurate with tue increasing wants of the Catholic poputation of the city of Washington The walls and tower contain about thirteen bun- dred thousand brick, an@ the external appear- ance of them is certainly sufficiently neat and ar- tistie to commend the admiration of every thor- ough-going mechanic. It is expected that the interior will be ready for use by next Faster Sun- day,and the progress now making vives promise of a realization of this expectation. We learn that the Rev. Father Maguire, who is well known to most of our citizens, is to have charge of this church when completed. Such an arrangement will be most satisfactory to many persons in this city who esteem that gentleman bighly. Potice. —Before Justice Williams —On the day before yesterday, Officer Henry Nasb ar- rested Joseph Gerhardt on a Corporation war- rant, for selling liquors in violation of the law agatnst selliny spirituous liquors on the Sabbath. be defendant exercised his right to have a jary called, it being an allege’ secoud offence, und involving a tine of $#, aud a forfeiture of li- conse. The heavy showers of last night and this morning have had the effect to settle the dust in those cavities made in the streets by driving heavy vebicles over uewly-improved portions, and will be no disxad- vantage to the improvements.
