SSS eee Tur Heattuor Wasnineton —The report of the Commissioner of Health of the sanitary con- dition of the city during twelve months recently passed, has been issued with tabular statements, and as the matters of which it treats are of great Public interest and importance, we lay before our readers @ synopsis of its contents. The Re- port is as follows : James G. Berret, Mayor of Washington Sin: In compliance with the requirements of law, | herewith submit the annual report of this office for the year ending June 30th, 155 During the year, 1,108 deaths were reported, which was an increase of IS2 over the year Ppre- ceding. Of these, omitting the still-born, 41 89 per cent. were 5 years and under; 10 57 per cent., from 5 to W ; 1771 per cent., from 20 to 40; 13 63 per cent., from 40 to 60; 12 94 Per cent., over 60; and 3 56 per cent., age not reported. "Two deaths were reported of persons over 100 years old—one of them 102, and the other 108 years Kstimating the “poyrpee at 60,000, there was one death in every 56 (2 inhabitants. We can justly congratulate onrselves on the sanitary condition of the city as exhibited by the mortality statistics. There were only twenty deaths from congestive, intermittent, and remit- tent fevers, and one hundred and twent eight deaths from all forms of fever. From consump- tion there were one hundred and fifty-two deaths, apparently a large number, bat it includes many bere only temporarily, or whose residence in the city had been of short duration. The deaths from cholera infantum were sixty-four, a very small nomber im proportion to the population. The city was visited by no epidemic. Erup- tive diseases, and especisily scarlet fever, were more prevalent and fatal than for a number of years previously. Small pox prevailed to acon- siderable extent ems the winter and spring This disease was introduced into the eity in- fected persons from vessels plying on the r ver, and was disseminated by reason of the great num- ber of our inbabitant®@who are not vaccinated. Jn this connection | would suggest the Passage of an act to prevent the introduction of contagious diseases into the city, and also making vaccina- tion beer gone 1 would also recommend, 2s more economical, that the streets, alleys and gutters be cleaned by contract. From year to year, as uses spall be found for the offal, the expense will diminish, as in the case of the removal of garbage by contract Too much stress cannot be laid upon the im- portance ef a general system of sewerage, by which all sewers may Prod ap of a general plan; instead of being e merely with refer- ence to the particular place to be drained The contractors were actively engaged during the year in removing the garbage, the benefit of which has been experienced by the citizens, both as regards health and comfort. From the annual decrease of the expense attending the removal of the garbage, it may be presumed that it will, eventually, become merely nominal. I would renew the suggestion offered in a for- mer report, that it be made unlawful for dairies to be kept within the city limits, as from them arises one of the most serious nuisances to which we are ex da | would ask that the above » receive the early consideration of {| ctis. Very respectfully, Cuartes F. Force, Commissioner of Health. Tux Backs —We Mentioned, a few days ayo, that the police officers in charge of the hack and coach stands ia the Fourth Ward, bad obtained a large number of warrants for violations of the regulations. Within 48 hours the number has greatly increased. Yesterday some of the cases were called for trial before Justice Donn. In one of these the party was charged with appearing on the stand on Sunday be defence was that he was engaged, and was waiting for bis passen- Upon giving the name of the person, the officer reminded the Justice that another party claimed that he bad been serving the «ame pas- senger the same day, the same Ss same place. This case was laid over bearing. Some of the backmen were greatly in while others But the officers only ument in justification—“We act not of oar own will, but by the order of our superi- ors. Cmanez oF Aspuction axD FsLony.—Last night, Officers Zimmerman and Yea! man arrested H. B. Roberts on a charge of abduction and fel- ony. Tue Batt or raz Exptax Civs.—Temper. ance Hall. on last night, was the enti for the Inds and lassies elig paying their court to the temple c The Hall (which, by-the-by, is rapidly becoming the most popular saloon in vall, the aqcommodating janitor,) was well filled with pairs of handsome and gay looking dancers, who partici ia the Merry-making witha zeal which rated how well they enjoyed the pleasure of the occasion. Schroeder-s fine cornet band discoursed such music as the true vota y of the dance loves to hear ; and the instru- ments, stringed and wind, were kept in active employment under the well arr: orders of floor managers, | Morriee, S. B. ©, Geo S. Donn, and F.. Martin, whose efforts to please the company were rewarded by looks of grati- tude which sparkled from many an eye of beauty and sentiment. No time was lost in carrying out the weil selected programme of marches, quad- rilles, reels, waltzs, polkas, Spanish dances, schottishes, mazourkas, cotillons, round and hop walizes, which comprised the entertainments of the night. Thecinbs represented were the Good Will, Liberty, Social, Monumental, Friendshiqy and National. Schaffield catered ina style which placed all bis previous efforts inthe back round ; and the dance went round until the little hours crept on apace. and the satisfied merry makers at last surrendered to the somnoient intinence of absolute fatigue, dropped off to their bomes, and sought the recuperative power of “tired natare’s sweet restorer—balmy sleep.” Ongan.—The new organ recently purchased by the congregation of the Unitarian Church, on Lonisiana ayenne and Sixth street, was exhibit- ed last evening to an assemblage of members of the congregation and others. It is from the cele- brated mannfacturers, E. & GG. Hook, of Bos- ton, and is an instrument of fine appearance, as concerns its external mechanical design, and when played upon, charms the cultivated ear by the sweetness and power of its tones It _con- tains twenty stops, namely: ‘Tremulant, haut- boy, principal, stopped diapason treble, dulci- ana, open diapason, celestina bass, and stopped diapason bass in the swell, with open diapason, stopped diapason treble, stopped dia jon bas: principal, flute, fifteenth, and Viol the great organ, and sub-bass, with the couplers swell to ind swell to pedals and great to pedals, and bellows signal. It has two manuals, and two octaves of als. The case is in imi- tation of black walnut, and has three rows of gilt pipes in the front, which is of Gotbic finish. The size of the instrument is 15 feet high, 10 feet in width, and 7 feet depth. It was played upon by Prof. W. H. Palmer, Prof. T.N. Caulfiel id, and by Prof. J. P. Caultield, who is undoubtedly the Most finished performer uw the organ in the United States. He drew forth the capabilities of the instrument in a most admirable manner, by the artistic performance of several of Mendels- sobn’s most ditficult and beautiful sonatas. The extempore performance of Prof. Palmer was also elegantly and skilfully executed. Prof T. N. Caulfield tested the best points of the instrument by @ brilliant execution of one of Sebastian Bach's fugues. Circtit Covrt.—Judgments were given yes- terday in the following cases: John M. McCalla vs. Joseph Radcliff, judg- ment affirmed with costs; Delila Hazel rs. Cor- poration of Washington, do. doy John Alexan- der ves. Wm. H. Par er, judgment reversed with costs; Daniel McLaughlin ts. Corporation of Washington, judgment aftirmed with costs; Ho- race S. Johnson vs James McFaul, do. do.; Helen M. Corporation of Georgetown, do. do; John Lange vs Morritz Pinner, judgment reversed with costs; George W. Oyster vs Lemuel Towers, judgment atiirmed with costs; William H. Campbell rs. A. B. Gladmon, judgment affirmed with costs to the appellee. To-day, a petition was filed before the Court by Henry Rackaway for the removal of Richard H. Trunnell from the office of county constable, for alleged malfeasance of office in collecting the amount of a judgment and refusing to By over to the plaintiff. Rule was laid upon Trunnell by the Court, to show cause why he should not be removed from his office, and the time for a rps, was fixed for Saturday next. F. W. Jones for petitioner, and Robert Ould for re- spondent. The appeal of Humphreys & Juenemann ts. The Corporation, wherein appetiants were fined for selling lager bier without a license, was taken up, and Mir, Moigas, for the appellants, was ad- «dressing the Court when our report closed. A CoLtision—Boat Suxx.—The fogs, at this season of the year, hang over the Potomac quite beavily, and much impede the navigation of the river—especially during theearly hours of the day Yesterday morning, soon after the steamer Mount Vernon had passed ‘the Bluff,” the fog became so dense that nothing could be seen ten feet be- yond the bow ofthe boat. While thus enveloped, the steamer ran over a longboat, loaded with firewood, and sunk her. ‘The mate of the steamer and some of the deck hands went in a boat to the relief of the sunken vessel, took off her crew, towed ber ashore, and sent to Washington for another boat to carry up the cargo of wood. The Hot reversed the engine as soon as the long boat became visible thre the fog, but too late to prevent damage —~ Joun E. Owens ts ALexanpita.—The an- nouncement of the appearance to-night of this admirable comedian has, we learn, created a positive furore among the quiet denizens of Alex- andria. The indications are that Liberty Hall wiil be overwhelmed to-night, and the facetious Owens receive a flattering ovation. Manager Tayleure certainly merits the grateful acknowl- edgments of the Alexandria public for present- ing it attraction of so bigh an order; and we are led to believe they will be tendered in no niggard manner. Rear Estate.—Our readers cannot fail to no- tice the excellent terms which Messrs. Evans & Thompson offer real estate. Indeed, they sell, we are sure, almost as soon as they advertise. They announce, to-day, a frame dwelling house, on the island, as well as several unimproved lots of ground in the neighborhood of the Armory. Let those who want homes on easy terms call at once on these accommodating gentlemen. ‘TRaVRLING —Our readers in Washington and Alexandria will notice that Hugh Latham an- nounces in another column that bis omnibuses will be ready at the steamboat wharves as well as the depots of the railroads. The public have long known Mr. L, as a most enterprising gentle- man,and such attentive, pelite and accommo- dating agents and drivers as are in connection with + lines merits for them not only the exten- sive patronaye they are now receiving, but a large increase. Tue Panorama.—The Odd Fellows’ Hall Presented, yesterday afternoon, a most beautiful spectacle. All the orphans of St. Vincent's Or- phan Asylum were present by invitation, and about seven bundred other children, all of whom were delighted with China and Australia. The Panorama continues open to-night. Rivex —Business at the wharves is still on the increase. The coal trade continues with undi- minisbed activity; and at the wharves of the va- rious dealers vexsels are arrivivg almost hourly, freighted with fuel for Washington consump- tion. Several heavy arrivals were reported this morning at Harvey & Clarke’s wharf. Tue Marxet.—This morning, although the supply in the Centre Ma ket was not as large as we have seen it, it was equal to the demand and of excellent quality. The hay market was well supplied, but the sales appeared to be dull Rear Estare Sate —Yesterday, James C MeGuire & Co., sold a small brick house and lot on Eleventh street, between C street and Penn- sylvania avenue, for $2,695.
