The subject of a market house to be situated in a cen- tral location ia the Seventh Ward is agitating the popular mind, and at the same time en- deavors are being instituted for doing away with several old established auneyances, which have long since become the objects of to those interested in the welfire ant portion of the Federal M. of the wants of the fast augmenting ulation a number of the leadi citfaens bave determined to call a meeting of the citizens of the pees ore the purpose of,taking into serious considerat! among other t the opening of Sixth street through to Peppsylvania avenne, the building of a market house, and the drainage of James’ Creek With respect to the latter object there can be no doubt but that the health of the entire city is more or less aliected by the condition of James’ Creek during a considerable portion ofevery year; bat at the same time there Is a prospect that the rop@sed improvements at the Arsefial wil! ef: a this object without the interference of the citizens, ‘fo, pare the for the erection of the pi Arsenal tidings much grad- ing and filling’ up will be uired, and the amount of filling up’ will far exceed that of grad- ing, so that there will be a Tatet for the use of a latge amoant of material more than will be obtained from the cutting down of the elevated portion of the ground to beimproved. That aide of the late purchase which Nes next to the river will reguige ail the material which will be ob- tained from the excavation. The qnestion will then arise as to the best place from whence to ob- tain the material for fill i that portion bor- dering on James’ Creek; and bere is the plan for abating the pestilence which, rising at this point, is every day and every hour during the warm months of the year, conveyed all through the city and is the foundation of the fortunes of nine- tenths of the medical fraternity. In sames Creek is to be found this material, the removal of which from its bed will not only drain the marsh and render this now waste territory useful and valua- ble, but will save the Government the expense of hauling from distant places. Thus, a two-fold object will be attained at a nominal expense. Bat the subject of a new market-house for our neighbors of the Seventh Ward seems to be a le- gitimate question for them todiscuss. The time will eventually come when the Centre masket Will cease to exist at its present location; it will ive place to more important matters, and it be- faoes the people of this part of the city to look tothe question in season, of their accommoda- tion. Fae Island is becoming thickly settled, even to its most extreme southern limits, and the distance whieb a considerable portion of its pop- u jon are now compelled to travel for articles of dally domestic consumption, is becoming a mat- ter of serious contemplation to them; and, if properly fostered, will soon end in the establixh- ment of 2 good market-house in a central part of this extensive community. We notice with pleasure the activity of the Seventh Warders upon this subject. At the “Arsenal Under the active superintend- ence of Maj. Ramsay, the new commandant here, the quarters of the officers have recently been pisced im complete renair; the exterior walls of the various buildings have been freshly painted, the walks an@-drives about the grounds hand- somely repaired, the lawns nicely trimmed, and & number of the celebrated Dablgreen howitzers placed at the various gates of en Ty. A general spirit of improvement is observabie ali about the piace. Mc. George Wright, the master of the machinists depastmeat here, is engazed upon the manufacture of congreve rockets for the arma- ment of the vessels designed for the expedition to Paraguay. These fatal missiles aire consid- erable skill in their construction, and are in the Proper bands to insure theircorming out all right, sbould there occur any necessity for their use. it is understood that Mr. T. U. Waiter, archi- tect, will in 2 few days proceed to occupy the building at the north extremity of the new por- tion Arsenal grounds, and place a uumber of draugbtmen Lacon tr dag at once commence a the drawings for the roposed new bulld- ioghaer the Armory, &e This fact will give rise to renewed and redeuvled enterprise throughout the entire lower portion of the Seventh Ward, which will not flag for the next two years, at least No Sout ror Mesic'—Mr. Editor: In the Star of yesterday I noticed particularly the notice of the nuisance to which our citizens have been subject- ed for some time past by the organ grti ders, &c Aucther ciass, equally to be complained of, are those who hawk about our principal streets fruit, vegetables, &c., blowing, at every few Paces of their progress, those miserable, shrill tin horns, much to the annoyance of the welt, but severely painful to the afficted sick.
