Tux Union Prarxe Maerixos are contin- ued the present week at the Rev. Dr. Butler's (English Lutheran) Charch, corner of Eleventh and H streets, and are attended each afternoon by large and deeply interested congregations. These meetings have been in progress, we be- lieve, abott six months; and jartag this time, Mis thought that 3 La number of persons bave been led to embrace religion, whose atten- tion was first called to the subject of prayer and repentance, by attending them. It would seem, from this fact. that the erance jous men and women of the various Christian denomina- tions, in keeping up the interest originally awa- kened in this community by their united efforts in behalf of the careless and indiff-rent, bas not been lost upon the objects of their pious solici- tude, and that, in some instances, persons have been converted who never before gave the sub- Ject of feligion more than a passing thougbt.and were led to the prayer meetings at first from mere motives of curiosity. We have recently heard of a@ nomber of instances of this chaa*ter. charcb, at the five o’cleck meeting yesterday af- ternoon, was completely filled with ple, and the exercises were of a deeply Interesting ebarac- ter. The Rev Mr. Morsell opened and conduct-d the meeting, and was assisted by Rev. Doctors Smith, Garley, Sunderland, Sampson yal members of the laity. After the opening hymn had been sung. Rev. Mr. Morsell read a portion of the one hundred and nineteenth Psalm, commencing “O, how I love thy law; it is my meditation all the day.’ Upon this portion of Seriptare, the Rev. gentleman spoke briefly and eloquently Rev. Dr. Smith followed, and read some sta- tistics furnished by the Secretary of the Wasb- ington City Bible Society, showing the number of copies of the Seriptures which had been dis- tributed by that society, durihy a short period to families heretofore destitute of them; and containing much valuable information as to the it mode of dispensing the Bible, and as to the large increase of their benevolent operations in this respect Kev. Mr. Sampson spoke of the interest which those not professing religion bad in the daily prayer meetings—particularly those having fam- ities—and went on to demonstrate the point by saying that there were occasions when the pa- rent bad need to impart religious instruction to bis echildren ; in sickness it was often necexsar fer him to direet his offspring towards the Sa- viour, and inculeate in the minds of bis loved ones the divine precepts of the Scriptures. How couid he do this unless he himseif read the Bible and became acquainted with the way of eternal salvation ? . Rev. Dr. Gurley spoke of the relation between Prayer and the success of the word of God. He wished this relation were better understood ; the Spirit was given in answer to prayer. He thought the prayers of Christian people should be direct- ed to two objects; first, thet men might search the Scriptures; and, second, that reading they amigbt understand and be directed to seek Gud An eloquent prayer was then offered up to the throne of Divine Grace, and other remarks were made, after which the benediction was pro- nounced. Tue Serena bexs.—To-night the Virginia Ser- enaders open fora brief season at Odd Fellows’ Hall. The company comprises some of the best talent in the Ethiopian concert line in the coun- try, among them being John Landis and Paul Berger, both of whom will be remembered by our plaisure seekers, from the yenuine pleasure they have previously aifurded to Washingto- ians, as without rivals in their respective parts in such entertainments. The newspapers else- where speak inenthusiastic ierms, not only of the professional imerits of the individual members of this accomplished troupe, bat also of the artistic skill with which their entertainments are inva- nably conducted, from beginning to end. We cannot doubt that the hail will be nightly crowd- ed during their sojourn here. Grocenizs anv Ligvoxs —Onr dealers gene- rally are preparing largely for the coming busy seasom. Heavy stocks are already in store wait- ing for customers. We know of no men in the world whose promptness, politeness, and busi- ness tact entitle them to a larger patronage than the merchants of W ington. Our friends, Barbour & Semmes, especially, seem determined to be ready fof every demand that can be made Upon them inthis line. Correspondence of The Star. GEORGETOWN, Sept. 22, 1658. We learn, this morning, at the Canal office that they have a report (unofficial) from the break on the nine mile level, that the repairs had been so far completed as to admit of the Passage of boats. None loaded with coal or any kind of produce have, as yet, come in from any point above the break. This ‘temporary difficulty has roved an interruption to trade, and Medora Tilers and matters in general about the canal wharves quite loomy and lifeless. We hope, however, that the yey Sea been entirely and thoro raised, and before the close of the week ness matters will in begin to wear their usual encouraging aspect. The demand for vensels to freight coal to north- from some of the captains of the vessels that the of freights which the coal companies have been offering for some time past is the chief reason why the \ficulty exists. We learn from a note from one of the members that the mines eon pee Guards have resolved to lay aside their old un form, and in the future appear in a new one, consisting of black coat and pants, and glazed cap. here is still room for more members in this sprightly corps of young volunteers; and they desire that the young men of the town unite with them. A meeting for this and other purposes will be beld at the armory of the company, Forrest Hall, on Thurs- day night. See advertisement. ‘he Potomac Light Infantry. Capt. J. McH. Dr. Lewis Mackall, Jr., was last night elected surgeon regret to learn that the last-mentioned com- any was very much annoyed during their drill t night, by some anprincipled creatures, whose conduct was, in part, of the most vulgar and dis- fepatable character, evidencing to every respect- able person (hut they were much better qualified, in point of decent training, for the cultivators of the Corporation farm, than the waiks of social life. We sincerely hope our police will, in the future, afford the company the protection they are entitled to, from the annoyances and insults of such miscreants.
