This result is contrary to the ex- ons of lookers-on, generally, and as yet the matter is so obscured by- clouds that; at this distance from the scene, it is imppssible to tell why the alliance was not effected. In the ab- sence of certain information on this point, one may be allowed to guess, and we cannot believe ‘it will be far from right to attribute the break- ing off of the match to the multitude of aspi- rants for office to be found in the ranks of either division. There were no conflicting principles.in the way of a coalition, for each party..bad, it seems, previously consented to abandon those features of its own platform which were especially obnoxious to the other; and, as far as principle is concerned, it ap- peared that the union was really consummated. Could there, then, have been any other bone of contention than the division of the spoils, in case the coalesced factions were triumphant? We can think of none. But, be the cause of the disagreement what it may, the result of the two Conventions at Syracuse has been the nomination of two State tickets. The Republican nominees are: For Governor, Edwin D. Morgan, of New York. Lieut. Gov., Robert Campbell, of Steuben. Canal Commissioner, Hiram Gardner, of Niag- ra. : $ ate Prison Inspector, J. K Everest, of Clinton. While the Americans nominated, for Governor, Lorenzo Burrows, of Orleans. Lieut. Gov.. N.S. Benton, of Herkimer Canal Commissioner, James R. Thompson, of Genessee. State Prison Inspector, William A. Russell, of Washington. We published yesterday an account of the proceedings, embracing all of material inter- est that was done on the last day of the ses- sion, except the fact of the nominations having been made. A Lerrer From Battivore.— [Correspondence of the Star ] Battimorg, Sept. 8, 1852. There bas been no little excitement within the past week, concerning the fall election. The friends of the present Mayor (Swan) have pre - vailed upon him to become a candidate once more, and he has agreed. The probability is that there will be no opposition to him. Nearly all the old members of Counct! have been renomi- nated, including the present worthy president of the first branch, John T. Ford, Esq.; he was re- nominated by the citizens of his ward by acc‘a- mation. The city is well supplied with amusements. The Holliday-street Theatre is densely crowded every nig bt, to see the Florences ; eee have sev- eral new pieces and new songs. Their pe:form- ances cannot help but fill the house, wherever they go The enterprising manager (Mr. John T Ferd) has spared no pains to get together one of the best companies that ever appeared before a Baltimore audicace. The Museum has been doing a fine business with a small company. The Hutchinson brothers ar nightly at this house. reat yeas are being made to celebrate the 12th. The Baltimore City Guards go out to an encampment on their own hook to-morrow afternoon, and stay until Monday night. The oration to be delivered by bis honor Judge Joba Legrand, will call together a large crowd be subject will be the death of Wells and McCo- Mas, two young men who fell while defending the city at the battie of North Point. The pro- cession will be bers imposiag. The firemen, the butchers, the Old Defenders, the military and several of the charitable Orders of the city will be in the procession, including his bondr Gov. Thos. H. Hicks, bis honor the mayor, Thos. Swan, and the Hon. Judge John Legraad. ‘There has been much agitation here within the past five weeks with the tredepartment. They are to be re-organized. The steam fire engines work so well that several of the companies have ordered them. Mr. Thos. Winans, a wealthy mechanic of the city, is bailding a new sbipofiron. ‘fhe model is just like two cones putt gether, and perfectly round. The propeling part is a screw wheel which |s placed in the centre. He intends cross- ing the ocean in six days. There is mach curi- osity in regard to her success. But if she does not succeed ,the proprietor can suffer the loss well, for be is immensely wealthy, and has ney of money to play on. Yours, < Tue Crew or ruz Ecgo.—An effort has been made to effect the release of the crew of Ge_slave brig Echo, now confined in jail in Tharleston, 8. C. A writ of habeas corpus was granted on Monday, by Judge Magrath Of the U.S. Distriet Court, on the allegation of the prisoners that they had not been legally committed, inasmach as no hearing before any magietrate was granted, but that they were taken immediately from the brig to the jail. On Wednésday, a hearing ef the case was had before the court, and the counsel for the ac- cused presented their petition, and moved for a writ of eértéorati, to: be-directed to the Com- missioner, commanding him to show if any hearing had been allowed the prisoncra, to. gether with the particulars attending such pro- ceedings. After considerable argument, on the legal point arising from the fact that an appli- cation was made for a writ of certiorari before the proceedings on the Aaleas corpus were con- cluded, the prisoners were given in charge of the marshal, to be remanded to jail, and the court was adjourned to 10 o’clock Thursday, when the decision was to have been rendered on the petition for the writ of certiorari.
