—_—_— een ‘Tax Suitusonian Mustom.—The work of »,_ Preparing the Museum at the Smithsonian Insti- ‘ion is progressing as steadily and as rapidly as cumstances and the nature of the work will it. The of the specimens re- res the exercise of great skil) and patience; their for exhibition calls sMhe wits and mechan ingenuity of the ar- “rangers mtly to the test. So far much has been done in the Museum, and many interesting specimens bave been arranged in the cases. The arrangement is much better than formerly at the Patent Office. There the cases were so tall and the specimens so closely packed in them tbat it ‘was very difficult to inspect clos: ly any article in the upper sections. Here the specimens are ar- ran; to afford the visitor oppo-tunity to “er each separately; for, in addition to the fact that the articles are not crowded together, after the visitor bas examined all in the lower cases, be may ascend to a gallery constructed around the cases, about mmid-eighe of the hall, and closely inspect all in the upper cases. ‘0-day, a curiosity which will attract much attention will be adjusted in # case in the hull ; this is the dress worn by Dr. Kane while in the Arctic regions. It is acurious suit of clotuing, made of the thick soft fur of various animals pe- ealiarto that frozen clime. The suit was made evidently, with a view to comfort only, leaves no part of the person exposed—the head, face, neck, bands, feet, all being clad in the warm skins—the face being indicated by an ordinary mask. Great careand patience were necessary to get this relic in a condition fit for exbibition. ‘The destructive moth had made considerable havoc with it, but it is hoped that in its present condition, in the sealed = prepared for it, it may be ten fs longer Stanley's apleedia canery of Indian portraits ‘bax beon rearran; and is now ready for exbibi- tion. Catalogues will soon be prepared for this ‘very interesting ba!l of the Institution, which will doubtless be more attractive than ever after the last arrangement Thix important work cannot be done hurriedly. Prof. Heary and his able assistants would hardly be willing te permit the work to be hurried if abere isany danger of its being wags he goa com- Pleted—consequently the work will progress steadily and surely, and it is probable that by the aniddie of December the museum will be in a condition to attract visitors from all sections of the country. Tae AoricctturaL Fair at Rocxvitts.— This fair opened yesterday morning at Rockville, and was attended by the entire agricultural com- munity of the surrounding country, and a large number of visitors from this city and county and from Virginia. It is estimated that between five and six thousand persons were present, among ~ whom were many ladies. Richard J. Bowie, Esq , called the assembly to order,-and made some brief remarks, after which be introduced Judge Z. Collins Lee, of Baltimore, who ad- 1 dressed the audience, in the necessary absence of Robert Ould, Esq , of Georgetown, who was «<» CXpected to deliver the opening address. Judge e Lee spoke for half an hour, in a style of elo- ‘quence for which be is so justly noted. Mr. Ould ~Sasrived about an hour after the meeting bad # opened, and the President announced that he would deliver bis expected address in the after- ~ eon. Accordingly, at 2o0’clock Mr. Ould de- | liverea bis address, which was in his usual pow- * erfully thoughtful’ and happy style, and was listened to with marked attention by all present On its conclusion, Mr. Jos. Hl. wenn moved that the address be reserved for publication; which was ordered. Mr. Charles B. Calvert, of Bladensburg, was then called upon, and gavea very spirited account of the Maryland Ayricul- tural College, which appeared to be higily sat- isfactory to bis bearers. ‘The assemblage then dispersed over the grounds and looked on with admiration to the exercises of a large collection of saddle and draft horses in tbe ring. The en- tire day was one of quiet pleasure to all present ‘The fair continues taroughout to day. ‘Tur Festivan at Hunter Cuare..—a large and agreeable company were assembled at Hun- ter Chapel last evening, and the ladies in attend- ance were assiduous in their endeavors to make everything as entertaining as possible. All the fraits of the season loaded the tables, while the usual confections and the more substantial reali- ties one looks for after a pleasant drive, were not forgotten. Vocal music. by a quartette of two ladies and two gentlemen, contributed to the pleasures of the evening, and the glee “* When far from the town I take my way,” was sung with peculiar zest and animation. ‘Happy We” spread a pleasant smile on each countenance, while “ Hail, smiling morn!” seemed at one time to serve only as an introduction to that an- cient melody which has ever been a favorite with all “good fellows’’— We won’t go home Gl morning.”’ The attendance lastevening was so large an increase over that of the Preceding evenings, that it was determined to continue the festiveton this and to-morrow evenings. As the object is to complete the Chapel, and as the dive is a mest delightful one of only two or three miles from the Long Bridge, we advise our readers to avail themselves of this opportu- nity to spend a very agreeable evening, while, at the same time, they contribute to a noble and deserving object. Wasnineton Tagatre—Last night, Mr. Ed- win Booth achieved new honors by his spirited delineation of the part of Sir Edward Mortimer, in the Iron Chest. The audieuce was good, and th¢play pleased them well,as was demonstrated by the frequent and hearty applause with which its personation was received. The company all did their best to sustain him in his ditticalt part, and (be performance throughout was of achar- acter to justify the high encomiums with which all were greeted at the close. Miss Partington astonisbed, deligkted, aud fascinated the audi- ence in @ pas sewl, which she had to repeat. Dawson sbone conspicuous in that “phunny pharce’’—*A Kiss in the Dark.” To-night, Mr. Booth receives a benefit, and Will be received, we feel assured, by a crowded house. ‘The play of Hamlet, which character Mr. Booth takes to-night, is a favorite with Washington theatre-goers—the most of whom have sat spell-bound under the mazic voice aud manner of the lamented father of Mr. Booth in this character, will bail the announcement for to-night with pleasure Mr. H. C., September th, 1958. in Fine Ataam —Between 9 and 10 o'clock last night, the fire companies were called out by an alarm of fire in the central part of thecity. It was soon ascertained that there was no real necessity for the apparatus, and the firemen returned to their quarters. During the time of alarm, several indications of rowdy spirit were manifesed, evi- dently for the purpose of forcing the firemen to a renewal of disgraceful scenes. The yood sense of the companies prevented any serious outbreak. Our firemen have labored hard, recently, to place tuemseives on a respectable footing, from which they were thrown by acis of Persons principally unconnected with the departinent and the city, aad a few thoughtless ones who were led off by them. Now that they have vot rid of these dead weights, we hope they will be able to sustain that repatacion, as lasted and good citizens, for which they have strugyled. PiLremeRs.—The dealers in the Centre Market continue to suffer by the juvenile pilferers who loiter about the market, and rob the wagons and stands of whatever they can conveniently make eof with. So skillful are these young thieves that they frequently steal from the dealers e when they are watching the motions of the little scamps. One dealer yesterday morning told us that he had sold a dozen canteloups to a hotet Proprietor, and laid them aside where be could see them and every one who approached them When about to send them to their purchaser, he found all had been taken except one. ‘The dealer ho suspicion of who bad taken them, and - sapmaa Were surprised when he related CLoruixc —Mr.J.G_ Steptens, clothier, No. 30 Peansylvania avenue, under Brown’s Hotel, adverti-es that he is prepared to please all bis customers, no matter how fastidious, as to fits or Prices. Ae ER oe a Tux Pustic ScHooLs FoR THE pheggedar es | Public schools of thit efty are not ‘rag: schools,’ as intimated by “Not one of the Needy,” who writes in the Star of August 30th, and it will be a sad day for education in Wash. ington when his suggestion is adopted and the Trustees ‘inquire into the pecuniary cireum- stances of persons applying for admission,” and on, ad all but paupers. hese schools rest upon the basis of rights among citizens, and the communica alluded to is the first, as we hope it will be the last, attempt to introduce into the system of pub- lic instruction a distinction of caste. are free schools—free alike to rand rich, in- tended by the very terms that designate them to ita class, but to be, in- 8. part of the act in relation to public schools which relates to the admission of pupils isin the following words : “That all. white children between the age of six and sixteen years, within the respective school districts aforesaid, shall be admitted into the scho Is,” &c. Thus, it will be perceived, the suggestion is not within the power delegated to the trustees. They have adopted the plan of education upon the principle of first come first served, and we think any other policy would be unwise, as well as il- legal. “Phe writer of the communication to which these comments are directed has failen into the error which prompts his suggestion by not dis- cerning the true character poem public school system. The public schools bear analogy to the public hydrants. Has any citizen wants, either of water or education, which the public conve- niences do not supply? He may use private means to secure better accommodations; -but surely folly would be grown to madness, if it es- sayed to Inquire into the circumstances”? of all c= using the hydrants, and limited the wa- er to “the really needy” Yet the hydrants, when the water comes, will not be more free than the schools now are. True, the supply of water will be ample, and the means of education are limited Bat it were surely better to join hands with those who are laboring to extend the school s ystem, so as fully to supply the demand upon it, than to inaugurate Measures that would inevitably bring the schools into disrepute Now, the patra: F the schools are participants in the benefits of acommon furd to which they contribute. Were the suggestion adopted, they would become the recipitn's of charity : getting education as the Poor of a sister = do soup—upon certifica‘e of Pauperism. f those who suggest improvements are as sin- cere in their desire to furnish educational facili- ties to “the really needy” as are the trusters, they will strive rather to extend than to contract the sphere of public education. It would, we are ores bei them no less gratification than it would afford the trustees, if it were possible that thrift and industry and wise economy should raise every citizen to comfort, and the schools, in lieu of being pauper insfitutions, should contain, in all their extent, “Not Oxg or THe Nexpy.’? The recent burglaries which have been committed upon the dwellings of several of our citizens is 2 matter of considerable surprise and talk amovg our citi- zens.@ The general impression is that these dep- redations have been committed by villains who reside elsewhere, and have their pimps and ad- visers among us, who spy out and report to them the various dwelling houses where booty to any amount ts most likely to be found. It behooves our citizens, therefore, to keep a vigilant lookout and not only guard well their premises, but spy out if possible, and report to the officers all sus- -Picious characters that may be found lurking about the streets, day or night. A trifling interruption bas been caused to navi- Xation upon the lower level of our canal, by one of the large scows used for transporting cement, stone, &c., up the line of the Washington Aque- duct, sinking with a cargo of large stone, neat the Great Falls It is most seen jowever, that the difficulty will be entirely removed by to-mor- Tow evening. Mr. J. W. Barker launched from his yard, near the outlet locks of the canal, on Wednesday, a tere boat, constructed by him for Messrs. Pian- nell & Aud, and intended for the canal trade. She is calied the Capt. Aud, and bas been proe nounced, bt boat builders and other competent judges, decidedly one of the best boats, in point of model, arrangement and execution, now upon thecanal. This is the first boat of the kind built by Mr. B. at this point, and we sincere: hope that its superiority over the U pessgel # boats trading upon the canal will induce others having boats to build to contract with hing, aud build up for him a permanent business in our city. There is considerable speculative demand for flour. The demand is fully equal to the supply; and sales, which are confined paces to the home trade, are made at $4 62a$1.75 for géod Canal su- perfine brands. There is but little coming in by the canal. The supply of wheat coming in fs gradually increasing, and good to prime qualitiex of red and white find a ready market at $1.%0al.25 for the former, and $1.25a1 35 for the latter. Quite a large number of our citizens went to Rockville yesterday, to witness the agricultural fair now being holden there. We learn that the number of articles, animals, &c , on exbibition is quite numerous, and ax a general thing of a very superior character. The collection of per- sons there yesterday was unusually large, and the annual address, which was delivered by our esteemed fellow-citizen, R. Ould, Esq., was characteristic of its author, appropriate in every sense of the word, of extraordinary ability, and was listened to with profound attention by the immense concourse of persons who had the pleasure of hearing it. The sporting season has opened in earnest, and the office of our friend, Wm. Albert King, Esq., is overrun with young mea and old men, little boys and big boys, all purchasing ammunition with which to slaughter loads of game. Messrs A F. ALEXANDRIA, Va., Szpt. 10, 1858. Our City Councils will probably resume their Sessions next week. ‘The summer recess has ac- cumulated an amount of business for them which will make the next two or three sessions quite lively. The paving of King street, and another effort to secure for the Alexandria and Washing- ton Railroad Company the right of way across the town to the Orange and Alexandria depot, are already exciting much interest and street talk. Petitions in favor of both projects have been circulated, and much anxiety is felt 2s to the action of the City Councils in the premises. That King street sadly needs repairing, no one doubts; but the Leavy outlay required for the Purpose, ix believed by the opponents of the scheme, to be more than the town can attord in the present condition of its finances. They argue for delay: if times get better, we'll have more money; if times grow worse, the streets will have to keep them company. The friends of the “right of way’? contend that there is a change in the public sentiment of the people which will justify achange in the action of Council. The opponents say that there is no such change, and that in addition to all the arguments used for the Proposed extension at its iast trial, the over- whelming vote which then killed it, makes it incumbent upon the Councils to stand’ by the ac- tion of the people. They profess, however, a perfect willingness for a reconsidesation of the vote, if the railroad company will pay the elec- tion expenses. In the County Court, yesterday, A, Smyth, qualified as an Attorney at Law, and W.J Alli- son resigned the position of countyconstable.
