The number of first-class dwellings and business bouses which have been erected on the principal tho- Toughfares, and also about the suburbs of the Capital city this season, far exceeds that of any | 39 em year, and is calculated to exerta mighty nfiuence in stamping Washington with an as- portance abroad, and to draw ber persons with means sufficiently ample to enable them to take a —— and abiding in- terest in common witb our citizens in ma! ae ae the pet city of the American Repub- ie Among the various |: and handsome new dwellings about ae: | finished for occu y we notice on the I » between Sixth Sev- enth streets, on Virginia avenue, two fine first class dwelling houses, which have recent! erected for Mrs. Williams. They are feet wide by 40 feet deep, and three stories high, with a roomy basement story, and are fin’ in a bigh style of art in every respect, and capable of commanding at least $100 annual rent, and cheap at that. Mr. J. A. Cassell executed the brick work, which is done in a faithful and neat manner; Mr. T. Milburn was the ca: iter and superintendent; the stone work,a pretty job, was eager by Mr. J. Vi Tr; the iron work by Vhite & Co ; the painting ty J.T. Cassell; and the plastering by Al! & son, who know bow to execute work, and do it always. Another handsome improvement which has been in operation for some time in this nelgb- borhood, and which is now nearly finished, is the two large houses owned by Mr. J.A. Cassell, and fronting on the reservation formed by the intersection of Seventh and B streets, with Vir- ginia avenue. These buildings have been erect- ed under the personal superintendence of the proprieter, who is a bricklayer, and laid the walls himself, which are a model for the most aspiring of mechanics of this class to follow. The houses are twenty-two feet front by sixty- four feet deep, and three stories high, the rear wings being three stories high, with a large and Well-constructed basement. The carpenter work was done by Mr. Clements; painting by J.T. Cassei, and the plastering by Messrs. Allen & Jackso: Those houses contain eleven rooms each, and are calculated to accommodate the most extensive housekeeping requirements, as well as to adorn the entire neighborhood. | of Increased im ‘Tux Names oF THE StaEETs oF WasHING- ‘Tom.— A subscriber writes us the following in- teresting suggestions with reference to a general change in the numes of the streets (not the ave- mnes) of the Federal Metropolis, which he pro- Wasnincton, A ist 28, 1858. Bditor of the Star: The plan of an alphabet- feal and numerical denomination of our streets, while it commends Itself to all for its conven!- ence, has been censured by strangers for its pe- dantic monotony, as well as for its harshness and lack of dignity and propriety. [ confess that such were my own impressions on first coming to Washington. Time, and habit have, how- ever, the course of a dozen or more years, soothed the asperities of offended taste, but they bave by no means rooted out the latent grounds of it. +] still regard the system asx eminently convenient, but at the same time objectionable in point of taste; and I respectfully propose an expedient by which the principal esthetic objec- tions may be removed without, in the slightest degree infringing on its utility. Our avenues are named from the States. Sup- Pose that the alphabetical streets take the names of the distinguished patriots, warriors and states- men who have passed away. Thus. A street north would become Adamx; B, Benton, or Ber- rien; C, Clay, or Calhoun, or Clinton ; B, Davis or Duane, &c. The people inbabiting the severa streets might be permitted to select the name baving the corresponding initial. There would be no difficulty in arriving at satisfactory results in every instance. In many cases there would be almost entire unanimity. The alphabetical streets south of the Capitol might be numed in same manner, after public ee ee adopt the names of the most American trees, with correspond- chai ——— ‘he numeral streets west of the Capitol might take the names of American rivers, in alphabeti- cal order, always giving the preference to those of lodian origin, and avoiding those which are also the names of States. Thus, ixt street would become Alleghany, 2d would be Brazos, 3d, Chattahoochee, or Colorado, or Catawba, 4th, Delaware, or Dan, &c. ‘The numeral! streets east of the Capitol might, in Ike manner, assume the names of the prinel- pal American citles and towns, with correspond- ing initials. Tom willing to allow that the plan I have sug- gested is liable to the objection of being antic, but each individual street would gain a dignitied and appropriate name, in plsce of the barsh, in- sipid and derogatory nomenciature by which they are now distinguished. It will be observed that it retains all the convenience of the original plan, siuce by it any one who is familiar with the alphabet can at once decide in what part of ibe city he ts, by the initial of the street he may be upon. Yours, truly, FRanxuiy. ARREsTs.—On Tuesday, a gentleman from Virginia, on a trip to the North, fell into compa- ny, with a person in this city, who ‘‘ appeared to be a nice sort of fellow,” and went with him to the Capitol. There the nice young man met a friend, with whom he bad a tinancial settlement to make, in order to do which, he drew from his — @ roll of red-backed notes, and finding he ad none small enough, he wested the Vir- — to loan bim #5v till they returned to the wotel, which be did. Upon their return, they went into a room, and the Virginian was re- quested to be seated. and the stranger went to ¥et bis note changed, but has not since returned. The description of the sharper was given to Lt. McHenry, and last night be met « suspicious in- dividual who answered the description and fol- towed bim to s house kept by acolored man, near the corner of Four-and-a-half and C streets, where be was arrested. with two others Retr J — their names as James Ross alias Wm. G. yon, Wm. G. Clinton and Jas. Powers. They were committed to jail for a further hearing by Justice Donn, and a telegraphic dispatch sent to Richmond for the unfortunate yentleman who fost the money. AT THE ARsENAL.—Maj. Ramsay, the new commandant at the Washington Arsenal, hes re- cently had his quarters renoyated in a very sub- stantial manner, by causing the windows to be evlarged, the parlors to be replastered with a beautiful modern moulding, in angle, and the introduction of water. Bath rooms have also beea added to the sleeping rooms, and various ether medern comforts Led conveniencies have _ under bis direction, about the e, t of which were very much neede: » the quarters of the oficers here having been erected a number of years ago, and having received very fittle attention beretofore since their erection The most of the repairs bave been effected by tbe workmen inside the Arsenal grounds, under the superintendeuce of Mr. Miller, master of the ‘wood work shop. They will eacamp at that beautiful Spot and devote a portion of the day to those military maneuvers for excellence in which the corps are so renowned. ‘‘Grim visaged war will smooth bis wrinkled front,’’ as be cannot ble doing: atthe sight of such sweet smiles as will enlightea the encampment, and to the music of # fine cotilion band the party will «‘tread many & measure of the sportive dance”? Of course the belles of Washington know that the Washington Ligbt Infantry never fajl in their efforts for the public amusement, snd such a se fag beauty as the oecasion will present “may we be there to see ** Faimxpiy Warnixe —It is now the season when many of our werchants are about receiving new supplies of goods for their fall trade, and they consequently will be obliged to have bales aud boxes brought as near the doots of their ‘warercoms as possibile, for convenience. The nomination of several local agents by the Master of ‘Fransportation was contirmed. lt was stated by the President that he would attend a meeting of the Presidents of the four great lines at Philadelphia to-day, if they did not conclude to come to Baltimore for that pur- pose. Wasuincton Turatre —Another fine audi- ence greeted Mr. Edwin Booth on his third ap- pearance last night at the Washington Theatre. The house although not inconveniently crowded, ‘was well filled throughout, quite a number of transient visitors mingling with the throng of permanent visitors that made up the audience. Mr. Booth appeared ax King Lear. His concep- tion of the character of the jealous, petulant, and vindictive old man was as truthful as his delineation of it was admirable. To the rare meeting of extremes in Lear the stage too often holds up acracked mirror that distorts the fea- tures it should portray, and loses for the poet the Tare ambrotyping of nature that is the key to his wondrous influence upon the human heart. But the acting of last night never stepped beyond buman nature. The extremes of passion, from the awful malediction of the offended father He the untilial Goneril, to the last kiss that waited expectant of breath at the em of dead Cordelia, never ceased to be probable, and Lear, ‘every inch a king,’’ never ceased to be a man. Mr. Daly, as Kdgar, seemed to be at home in his part, ax did Mr. Donaldson, as Edmund Mr. Lanagan’s Duke of Kent was sustained through- out with an ease which would do honor to greater PH oapaceocie and we have seen the robes of Cor- delia upon shoulders less fitted to begr them than Miss Parker. The audience seemed highly delighted, and in frequent applause gfVve token of approval: When the curtain fell there was a very general and pro- longed call for Beoth, to plies d he made no re- sponse The National Medley was briskly danced, and being encored repeated still more briskly by Miss Partington ‘The entertainment was concluded 4 a good Tepresentation of the vaudeville “+ The Loan of a Lover,” Mr. M. W. Fiske drawing much ap- plause as Peter Spyke, and Miss Jetferson making one or two decided little hits as Gertrude. To-night, instead of “A New Way to Pay Old Debdts,’’ as announced yesterday, the company give © The Iron Chest,’? Mr. Edwin Booth ax Sir Edward Mortimer. Dawson will be funny as ever in the farce, which is ‘‘A Kiss in the Dark.” Mort THAN THEY Bagcainep For.—Our neighbors below are hard to beat; witness their energy displayed in the following, which we copy from the Alexandria Gazette : An evening or two since, three gentlemen, heads of large commercial houses, in this city, were seated at the front door of one of the trio, quietly conversing, when the topic of conversa- tion turned upon wood, and the price of putting itin cellars. Two of the gentlemen contended that fifty cents a cord was too i a price for the labor, and signified their willingness to un- dertake to do the same work for that sum per cord. Nosooner said than done, and Col. 8 at once offered his friends Messrs. W.& P. fifty cents a cord for putting away some eight or ten cords of wood, then lying in the street opposite bis house. His offer was accepted, and the two gentlemen immediately set to work throwing the wood down the cellar. Messrs W. and P- la- bored faithfully until dark, by which time they bad thrown in about three cords, and early next morning commenced again, and put in two more, when it was time to go to their business. The remainder of the w: was to have been thrown in last night, when they were to have received their stipmlated price if was refreshing to see with what zeal the two gentlemen labored, and the occurrence bappening in a quiet of the city, they were not mach eae pe ‘d ‘azers. The parties undertaking the work still declare thut the price is adequate, (but have declined sev- eral offers of larger lots of the same sort of work.) Taz Cnoi Union. — Last night we visited the Fourth Presbyterian Church, and had an op- portunity of bearing the Choir Union at their monthly rebearsal. The meeting was not as full as we expected to see, probably because of a rather late selection of the time and place of re- hearsal. The conductor of the Union is Captain F. A. Tucker, and we were glad to see that a few of our professional musicians bave united with this amateur association, and constructed a ba- sis for an orcbestra under the lead of Prof. John Exputa, for which they deserve credit. The music was yenerally of that class of sactéd mu- sic used by strong choirs upon special occasions, and consisted of selections principally from the oid masters. The rehearsal was a very gocd one. But, unfortunately, a number of the members did not arrive till late in the evening, and declined fo sing, which caused great inequality in the parts, aod resulted in a failure to display fully the beauty of the selections. The more perfect rangement of the Union will obviate such dis- advantages at future rehearsals. Trias at THe Guvarv Hovse.—Jobn Ster- ling, drank, disorderly and profanity; work- house, 90 days.
