OrriciaL Rerort oF rue Cairr oF Poticr.— WasHINeton Crtv, Sept. 2, 1958. Dear Str: In accordance with the 16th section of the act establishing a police force for the city, 1 respectfully state that the Police force during the month of August bave been vigilant in the discharge of the duties assigned them. The peace and quiet of the city at thls time ts as good as it has been at any time for the last ten years. The greatest cause of complaint now ex isting with many citizens {< the large number of hogs and dogs running at large contrary to law, which nuisance | hope to have abated in a few days, as strict orders have been given to the police to at- tend to that branch of business; for it seems that the taking up of hogs or the destroying of dogs has no effect on the owners of those animals In their keeping them confined There have been arrested and bronght to the guard-house of the city during the month 315 persons, a large Lhe sees of them charged with drunkenness and vagrancy, of which number there were—whites, 215; colored, 97; females, 66; males, 249; natives of the District of Colam- bia, 102; Maryland, 37; Virginia, 32; Pennsyl- vi 1; New York, 10; Kentucky, 1; Missouri, 1; North Carolina, 1; Tennessee, 1; Ireland, 90; Germany. 16; Italy, 1; Wales, 1; France, 2; Eng- land, 7; Scotland, 2; and, in addition to this number, 53 were accommodated with lodgings. The regulations in relation to the drivers of hackney carriages, have been more strictly en- forced, with an excellent effect, and some fines on that account have been imposed. The amount of judgments and costs obtained for violations of the corporation ordinances dur- ing the month of August ix $3,009 41; the amount collected is $1,255 &2; and a larger amount of supersedeas than at any previous month. - Very respectfully, your obedient servant, J. = ebuprar ef of Police. CENTRE MARERT opened this morning withan ample supply of provisions in every ¢epartment; and a very large atteudance of dealers and pur. chasers—consequently a brisk demand and quick sales. The prices generally were as quoted in the Star of Saturday last. The regulations, so far as relate to order, were strictly observed, and few complaints were heard. A very dangerous practice, which we have frequently called atten- tion to, is still the cause of accidents, viz: the practice of igpetes : melon rinds in the gang- ways. This morning a venerable lady was thrown upon ber face eer ise upon one of those dangerous traps. ‘ortunately she was not seriously injured. Those occurrences are very mortifying to the sufferers at the least, and some- times they do injary that results in making crip- ples for life. If the officers cannot prevent this practice, it would be well for dealers to Protect their customers from harm by aiding the officers and punishing every one guilty of violating the market regulations in this way. The enforcing of the law in such cases would soon break up the dangerous practice. Eves Toots.—Attention is called to the ad- vertisement fn another column of E. L,. Simons, whose shop is at the corner of G and Seventh streets. Mr. Simons is a thorough going work- inan, being an old and experienced hand at his business, which he has pursued to the satisfac- tion of his customers in New York, California, and at the Navy Yard and Capitol in this city. It will be seen that he is prepared to perform, at short notice, all kinds of work in his line, for the faithful execution of which he is competent in every respect. Those in want of pumpmaker’s augers, tops, dies, drawing-knives, cleavern, mill-pieks, stone and marble cu ters’ tools, car- penters’ tools, sculptors’ chisels, rippers, skew- ers, machinists’ tools, etc., will do well to give Simons a cali. Tue Wasuincton Firemen in ALEXANDRIA. The Franklin and Columbia Fire Companies, and the Metropolitan Hook and Ladder Company of this city, ran down the turnpike to Alexandria, on sight of the fire in that city last Sunday night. Having given what assistance they could to the Alexandria firemen, they were hospitably enter- tained at the engine houses of the Friendship and Sun fire companies, and returned bome in the steamer George Page, leaving Alexandria at fif- teen minutes to four o'clock on Monday morning. Samuel T. Hartley & Son return thanks, in the Alexandria papers, to the firemen of Was ington for their successful efforts to save from the flames the store which they occupy. Recovery or tHe Bovy or Mr. Horrma The steamer James Guy left this city morning, with a number of those who participa- ted in the recent fishing party at the White House, and other friends of the young man (Samuel Hoff- man) who was drowned on Sunday. At 11 o’clock the steamer arrived at the spot where the sad accident occurred, and forthwith every ar- ran; it which ingenuity could devise was made for tbe Tecovery of the body of their drowned comrade. The first drag was so well directed that it caught the object of the search, which was quickly taken on board and the steamer put on her homeward way. The party arrived at the wharf a few minutes before three o'clock. The body was removed to the Powhatan Honse, foot of Seventh street, and an inquest held vf Coroner Woodward. ‘The examination elicit- the facts we mentioned yesterday, and the ay, returned a verdict of accidental drowning. his morning the funeral of the unfortunate Bape! man took place, and his remains were laid a their long home, at the Methodist cemetery. Tue Wasnincton Tuzatre.—The Theatre seemed, at its opening last evening, as familiar as the faces of friends that now and then we meet on the street, just returned from summer recrea- tion at White Sulphur and Red Sulphur, Moun- tain top and-Sea-side. ‘The audience was large enongh to give prom- ine of greater patronage when the Summer wan- derers return, and ‘the city” is again in town. Edwin Booth gave a fine rendering of Bulwer’s “Richelieu,” in which he was ab! y su red by the company. The farce of -‘Betsy Baker” concluded the entertainment. To-night a brilliant audience is expected. The company present ‘“Othello.”’ Edwin Booth as “Tayo,’? Miss Jennie Parker as Desdemona, and the entire caste of the play being made with ad- mirable taste. Mr. and Mrs. Peter White, (Mr. Wm.
