z Ager ENT gr yas Garrres <Abest pond wad eb Fleishell. a citizen of the Fifth Ward, wno is eugaged in the erection of the beautiful marble stairways for the new wings of the Capitol, felt” from a sczBvld in the south by m: the breaking of 2 plank, 4 of 0) twenty feet, striking on the brick’ pavement the peenae dvlow He was immediately tales up by his companions who were work ingagyl oy and an iron bedstead & mattrass bei rovided or Danningtoa, chief of the Cap- tol police, he wus laid thereon aud taken to his home, on East Capitol street. Dr. Windsor was called in before he was remaved frora the build- ing, and proceeded to examine the wounds, which were found to be very serions indeed. In falling, bis face was downwards, and his left arm — ia contact with some of the angles of the brick wall, was in two places. His face next came in contact with the pavement and hen Bp sin of loose brick which were lying scattered about; the right temple was laid open i bocking manner, forming a deep, triangu- ash some two inches in length, from Ly extracted several pieces of brick. It was aiso found that one of man’s Ax UNrAmstianen Ovtascr!—in the course ©f our somewhat protracted experience in city Nile, wewhave hardly ever known any community to suffer the infliction of so gross an outraze, fer a extended period of time, as is pow be- ing against the citizens of the Istand; and ts not of that quiet, uncom- Plaining sort, either, which chonses “to bear the ills we bave, rather than fly to these we wot not of.’ Qn the contrary, complaints have been loud and frequent, but it seems not yet sufficiently Doisterous to bring about the application of a remedy We slinde to the outrage of depo: rs the contents of sinks in the slough in the sowth— eastern pa the Seventh Ward, which bas been done nigbtly for some two months. The efiuvia which arises thence is carried by preva- lent southeast winds directly across to the most pulous portion of the ward, and the nuisance = now become intolerable The practice is one prohibited by age a) it Continues te be perpetrated, apparent! eny effort on the part of the city ‘ities to revent it The consequence is, as might be ex- that neighborhoods oa the Island, which ‘would be healthy but for this abomination, have Tecently become sickly; and, should an epidemic visit our city, this ravating cause wi cer- tainly tend to make it of a most virulent has a great eet fe kecp the voles of preence has a great val on the Isiand much reduced when compared with other sections of the city, while it prevents those ‘who own —* there from ing improve- ments, because rentals — could ni bly obtain, while this nuisance suffered to Te- main, would not justify the outlay. Our city authorities surely do not hold the opinion that those who dwell on the island are 9 so little importance as to make their agyrie ances and complaints unworthy attention? If they should remember that this aggrievance al- ready extends its influence over nearly one-half of the city; and should an epidemic occur, no one can pretend to fix the limits to which it might attain. Although by the time the poiluted air reaches Pennsylvania avenue, the disseming tion of the obnoxious gases has made their pres- ence less perceptible, their infectious qualities are hardly so reduced but that they tend to in- jure the health, to a very considerable degree, even at that remote distance But the citizens of the Island are equally deserving of the care of the Corporation with those of any other purtion of the city; and if ‘‘the powers that be’’ will only do their duty towards them in this and other respects, the advance of Beoperty there, and the greater freedom from sickness, will cause them to become wealthier, and, consequently, larger contributors to the ——— of the muni- cipal government. Then let the nuisance be at once abated. Firta Distgict Pouice.—Justice McKenna still continues to render his neat little Court- house at the corner of Pennsylvania avenue and some other street (whereof we ken not the name) attractive to the peop'e of bis district, who can- not eke out the measure of a month without hav- ing recourse to his legal advice upon matters touching charges of drunkenness, carrying wea- = of an unlawful character, small riots, fami- iv jars, vagrancy, and other interesting public topics. In all such cases, Justice McKenna dis- penses the advice with regard to the observance of that great cardinal principle which makes the law at once the ‘tion of the innocent and the terror of the evil doer. Mis list of cases for the montb of August foot up as follows : T. Van Murmike, for profane swearing, fined in two cases $3.16; Noah Payne, also profane, 82 4; Mary Brown, vigrant, workhouse 30 days; Lacry Ciarke, dronk and disorderly, #3 58; E W. Williamson, do. do , $3 5; Geo Willey, firing a gun in the streets, $5 55; Bill Dicks, do, $5 58; Martha Brown, dixobeying the fifth com. mandment, $394; Jas. Total amount of flues, $144 15. t will be borne in mind that Justice McKenna was away from his own office for a week during the month, in which time he officiated for J Donn, who was absent from the city. Of course, While acting for Justice Donn, ali the cases tried were entered on the books at Jus- tice Donn’s office. Notwithstanding this fact, his list of cases seems —_ fall, and denotes the activity of the police in his district in bringing to justice all violators of law. Cuntax Marxet—This morning, the attend. ance at the market was much larger than during the week past, probably because of the retu:n of many dealers from pleasure and business trips to the country. The gangways were crowded at an early hour, and so remained till near noon. The supply was equal to the demand, and of very ex- pan val quality generally. The fruit and vege- table stands were occupied by country dealers, who appeared to be doing very well. The butch- ers, too, were actively engaged. ‘The hay stands @ere well supplied prices in the sheds swere about as follows: : S12) Eggs, per doz.... 16a1S 6a=! Cucumbers 12 1at2| Apples ... s pan being entirely split open. Dr. Richards was also sent for, and the unfortunate man’s wound’s were properly dressed by him and Dr. Windsor. During last night, the patient was in great pain, and occasionally delirious. Mr. Fleisbell is a first-rate workman, a valuable citizen, and is much respected by a large number of persons to whom he Is Knowa, and who will regret to learn of his misfortune. THe WasHincton Tueatre —Theold patrons of the drama will be glad to see in our columns to-day, tbat the dramatic season will commence in this city on Monday evening next. The Wash- ing Theatre opens on that evening, Mr. Edwin Booth playing “ Richelieu,” supported by a caste of characters as follows: De ena Mr. H.F. Daiy; De Barabas, Mr W. A. Donaldson; De Berighen, M. W. Fiske; Louis XI, J. Ashmer; Clermont, J. W iting; Gaston, T Duncan; Julie de Mortimer, Miss Jennie Par Pas Seul, Miss M. Partington. The farce of ‘‘Betsy Baker,”’ with Mr M. W. Piske as Marmadnke Mouser, and Miss Cornelia Jefferson as Betsy Baker. The company which the enterprise of Mr. Ford thus introduces to the Washington public, is admirably selected, and to them will succeed, as the season progresses, various of those favor. ites of the public who always meet at the hands of metropolitan theatre-goers with <« bumper” houses, Of course,on Monday night the new regime wi'l be welcomed by an appreciative audience, and the “ season”? inaugurated in ample form. Bustness.—This morning the streets in the business localities wore a more cheerful appear- ance than during several days past. The mer- cbants were busily engaged with their country customers; and their activity encousages the be- lief that an early return of the busy season is ex- pected. The auction stands were all occupied, and surrounded by anxious bidders, while goods of every description, old and new, were « oing’? ata rapid rate. The showers, last night and this morning, created considerable mud in the streets, and made the crossiags very unpleasant to ladies especially. ‘This inconvenience will have to be endured for a short while, until the torn streets are in a fit condition for the relaying of the pavements. ATLANTIC TeLecRarn Caste OnnaMENts.— We understand there has been a great demand for this article, mounted in various patterns and styles, such as seals, charms, keys, rings, &c Our friend, Mr. H. Pirra District Ponicr Orrice.—The returns from this office to that of the Chief, show alarge amount collected last month in money, by officers Ross and King—besides a large amount in se- cured judgments. Justice Thompson’s return to the Mayor’s office shows that he bad fifty cases during the month of August. We have seldom seen the city market more thronged than it is this morning. A large supply of edibles of every kind are on hand—of fruits, especially, there is a superabundance. Wm. The Justice made a preliminary examination of the case, and committed Ages to jail for Court.
