Md., e 18th instant, agid about 58 years, GEORGETOWN. —— Correspondence of The Star. Groxncorrown; August 20, 1858. At an early hour of the afternoon our streets ‘Were alive with acrowd of beings of all ages and both sexes, who were wending their way toward the corner of High and Bridge streets, near which the Masonic Hall is in the course of erep- tion. The lodges of your city were largely re; resented, and wearing their gorgeonst mal ja, hen Egy ra a bite scent spectable. Atabout o’cloe: sublime imposing ceremon' was performed by M. W. CoM . Whiting, assisted by the officers of the Grand rey, in the presence of the Mayor, officers of the Corporation, Boards of Aldermen and Com- mon Council, and immense multitude o! persons. A fine band of music was in attendance, and per- formed a number of national and appropriate airs duri proceedings. The building ts under the charge of Messrs. R. R. Shekell, bricklayer, and Henry Wingate, carpenter, which fact is a certain guarantee of its early completion. Persons living near our city, having fruit trees on their farms, are loud in their complaints of de predation on their property committed by reck- less youths, and in some cases young men, who should have more honesty and decency than to steal. Look out, fruit robbers! Some of the in- jured parties are watching, and have determined va} these midnight visitors a warm reception. e have been requested to call the attention of the wed a me any police ?) to the outrageous conduct of a party of rowdies who station them- selves on the corner of Bridge and High streets, and make it a point to insult every decent person Passing the corner in question after sunset. But that is not the only resort of the rowdies of George- town; there is scarcely a corner in the town that some gang of rowdies does not occupy in the same manne id -‘make night hideous’’ with their obscene and blasphemous doings. If there is any legal remedy for this state of things, then we hope that the prores authorities will apply it at once; or if not, then respectable citizens would do well to take the matter into their own bands and by inflicting summary punishment upon t offenders put a stop to their rascality forever. Workmen are penity cagnars along the eastern portion of Bridge street in digging trenches for the mains of the water works. The work on the bridge spanning Rock creek, at the western ter- minus of Penasyivania avenue, is progressing ses n Monday next a jury will assemble for the purpose of condemning certain lots in Holmead’s addition to Georgetown, through which the new Aqueduct street will run. Spectator, Jr. ere ee Se ALEXANDRIA. gesrinrels Correspondence of The Star. ALEXANDRIA, Va., Aug. 20, 1858. Since the resumption of the trade upon the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, the locks of the Alexandria canal have been quite busily em- ployed. The coal wharves have resumed their liveliness. and the changing of cargo from canal boat to vessels furnish employment for a large number of men. Notwithstanding the failure of the steamer Alice C. Price, a large number of our citizens are of opinion that a Potomac boat from Cone River to Washington would pay. Certainly Alexan- dria, and I have no doubt Washington city, loses much of the trade for which they are the natural markets, by the want of some such convenience, ‘The companies owning the Alexandria & Wash- ington ferry line paige find to their interest, as it certainly would be to that of the public, to extend their operations in that direction.’ A good, staunch boat. with such a commander as Price, Baker or Magar, and managed by a re sponsible and energetic company migbt yet find the river route protitable The vacation draws to its close and the excel- lent sehools with which Alexandria is blessed in abundant profusion are preparing to resume studies.
