The scene was graced by the presence of a large number of ladies, who bad been attracted thither by the extengive preparations of the Company to make the sffair one of pieasure to all, many of whom were invited guests, aud during the afternoon evinced a deep Interest in the ceremonies of the eccasion. The hall was tastefaily decorated ‘With banners, pictures, wreaths, etc.,and looked more like the scene of a Say day joliification than gy | else. Withers’ Band had been engaged to furnish the necessary music, and well did they perform their musical duties, being frequently and loudly soptented for their javers. Gas Exptosions —Kefering to the late serious accident which bappened to Senator Chandler and bis daughter, at the Senator’s residence in Detroit, Michigan, by an explosion of gas, Quan- treo, the Washington correspondent of the Alex- andria Sentinel, says: “1 bad @ narrow escape myself last fall, ‘The placing of large station metres in the new wings of the Capitol, rendered a change necessary in the position of the pipes aud metres that supplied the vid building. A more unprovoked, dastardly, and murderous assault on quiet, unof- fending persons, never occurred in this city. It displayed the characteristics of the rowdy as- sassin and murderer in perfection The conduct of the officers of the Northern Liberties, and the members, indicated a desire for the preservation of the laws, and the restoration of order.
