On taking thechair,\ir. Thomp- son paid a most elequent tribute to the memory of the deceased. In commencing bis remarks, he said : “ We have come ti ther to discharge a sad and mrlafcholy duty. Mississippi, our beloved State, mourns the loss of an honored son. The whole South bax been despoiled of a true advo- cate and shining light. The country at large bas been deprived of one of its truest citizens, who had ever been ready to lay down bis life in de- fence of tie honor of our national . Whensach 3 man fallx—when be |s unexpectedly called from th Set of duty and usefulness to bis Gnal ac- coyht—what maa with any heart can restrain the sympathizing tear ?"? He then proceeded brietly to recount the public and private virtues of the acceased, and concluded with the remark, ‘* bat when dangers bad passed and the voice of lamentation was Lusbed, and the labors of an a:duous session of Congress were finisbed, he returns to the bosom of bis family, and there, in the arms of affection, calm and quiet minereve, Lis spirittakes its flight. Scand- ng over bis tomb, the sad reflection es itself upon us—of what avail is wealth and honor, and the esteem of men and deeds of noble daring, aud all the pride and circumstances of life? “<The paths of glory lead but to the grave At the conclusion of Mr. ‘Tbuompsou’s remarks, on motion of Col. Dowling, the Chair was au- thorized to appoint = committee to prepare reso- lutions expressive of the sense of the meetin) Messrs. Dowling, Pickett, Jewell, Slocnmb, Cook, Haley and Clark were beg, inted such committee; and, on motion of M jocuim, tbe chairman was added tu the number. The committee retired a few moments, and on their retarn Col. Dowling reported the followin: preamble and resolutions; which were unani- moasly adopted: Whereas most of those now bere assembled, (citizens of Mississippi,) residents in the Federal Metropolis during the three sessions whieh their distinguished and lamented fellow-citizen, Gen. Jobn A. Quitman, served in Congress, have, from their position, enjoyed favorable paler ties of witnessing the zeat aud fidelity with which he labor for the maintenance of the tights and honor of his constituents, and in the discharge of all his —_— duties; and also bis noiferm courtesy and kindness to all who came within the circte of bis influence, whether in the balls of legislation or in the domestic circle, aud especially bis fraternal regard for every Missis- sippian who approached him during bis resi- dence here as a public servant: And whereas, wuile the nation mourns in bis premature and unexpected demise the loss of a soldier and statesman, without fear and withoat Teproach, and views the event as a public calam- ity, we, as a portion of his more immediate neighbors and friends, feel, under the circum- stances, that we bave an additional motive to cherish and venerate his memory, and unite our voices In unison with the general expression of sympathy with his family and frie: in their afflictions which bave gone forth from il por- tions of our extended Confederacy: therefore Resolved, Tuat, in common with the people of Mississi pp! and the nation, we sincerely syimpa- thize with (he family and friends of the deceased ig the recent bereavement which hax deprived the,one of an affectionate husband, father, aud Protector, and bis countrymen of the services of @ tried patriot, hero, and statesman, who in a life devoted to their honor and glory in the State and national councils, ax well as by his gallant achievements iu the battle flelds of Mexico, bas rendered bis own name immortal and shed un- fading glory ou our common country. Maseloos, That a copy of these proceedings, signed by the president and secretary, be for- warded vy them to Mrs. Quitman, at Natchez, Miswiiegt and be published in the newspapers in this city and in the State of Mississippi. The meeting was afterward addressed by Mesars. B. F. Slocumb and 8. B. Bargie, both of whom delivered speeches highly appropriate to the occasion, in that they were just tributes to the memory of one of the nation’s great men. The meeting then adjourned sine die. BSuswer es. Rerp.—aA civil suit was tried on Friday last before Justice Thompson, of the fifth potice district, which has attracted considerable notice and inquiry, and we therefore give it be- low for the benefit of such of our readers as may desire to know the particulars : A suit was brougbt by Constable Busher against Wm. Rapp, to recover the sum of twenty-five dollars a! to be due for certain services ren- dered in collecting a bill of $100, due the defend- amt from 2 party iu Philadelphia. It was a jary triat; and facts came out before the jury, in evi- deuce, ax follows : It seers (hat a party in Philadeipbia owed the detendant a bill for rent, and other charges, amountnyg to S100. ‘The plaintiff, as was alleged, was going to Philadelphia on his owa business, and the defendant employed Lim to collect the aforesaid bill, paying ove balf of plaintiff's ex- penses to and boa Philadeipbia, and promising hum twenty tive of the one hundred dollars, if be could succeed in collecting the money.’ The pisintif! then took the papers and went away, aad after a few days returned to the defendant, giving the papers back aud saying Le bad failed tu obtain the money usequentiy, the defend - is oF otber, collected the bill + plaintitt, learning this fact, put faim for the twenty-five dollars offered him fendant in case he (plaintiff) should collect «bill. ‘Phe money was refused, and hence the A civil warrant was issued, at plaintiff ’s in- ee, by Justice Giberson, and made returnable before Justice Doun. The defendant appeared, and expressed a desire to rule the ease before Justice Walter. He was informed by the justice that be could not so rule the case; that It had been msde returnable before him, (Donn,) and there- fore must be tried in bis office. The defeudant persisted in bis desire to have the trial before Justice Walter. but was refused, until be at last said be would consult a lawyer, and see if be must be deprived of bis right to rule his case where be chose. At this the magistrate informed bim that be might rule the tris! where he pleased, so that he did uct rule it before Justice Waiter; but that he could not rule it there. So the case was accordingly ruled before Justice ‘Thomp- son, and the tria! came off as above stated ; the jury, after a little reflection, returning a verdict for the defendant. Mr. Rapp wishes to know if be sinned against any law in desiring to rule bis trial before Jus- tiee Walter; and whether he bad not, by law, or at least by courtesy. the privilege of choosing his own “ justice shop.” Carutwar Covrt.—On Saturday, Daniel Stuart, charged with an assault and battery upon An- thony Guimonaski, was convicted without the jury leaving the bex. A mo- bad been made for arrest of judgment in this case, om the ground that under the ect of Congress of 1531 bank notes worth less than five doitars hed no tegs! value, and hence this was not sm indictable offence. The Court sustained view, but remarked that « decision of this question bad been reserved until the last moment bec suse its « fect wus to discharge the party, and altbough not legally guilty he was moral ly so, and deserved some punishment. Neo other business appearing upon the docket for adjudication this term. the jurors were tinally diseLarged with the thanks of the Court and tuelr couatry. And the Court adjourned. Tair oF THE ANctENXTs—The young and gay Portion of our citizens ate having lively times witb their pic nics, excursions, &c., and it gives us pleasure to speak of their happiness and satis- faction. Who Lave a better right than those venerable men who bave done so much for our city and society generaily, to enjoy life, even 4s it is passing away?) We wish them a plens- ant trip; we are glad that as many as a dozen can be found among our old anid worthy citizens who can sing with the energy of youth “Time bas not thinned my flowing hatr, Nor bent me with bis iron band.”* We bope, upon their return, to hear a glowing account of the sights they have seen, and tie localities they visited im their Northern tour. May they live to enjoy many annual excursions. < [coMMUNICATED. Mr. Editor: In your last issue, under the head of “Police Retarns,”’ it is erroneously stated that Wm. Thompson, Police Magistrate of the Filth district, returned for the month of July, 1855, 31 cases. Now, by referring to my return, on file in the Mayor's office or that of the Chief of Police, it wilt be seen that 1 returned 42 cases. How this error originated EF cannot readily perceive. As an act of simple justice to me, Lask you to publish this eorsection. If my return of cases, daring the last month, was more than three times the number returned in the month of June, it is rasinly attributable to the vigilance of the police officers of the Fifth distriet, (W.L Koss and J. ¥. King) who, I hope, will continue thus faith tully to discharge their duty in the district to which they gry it will be seen, in the offi- cial statement of the Chief of Police, (published in all the city newspapers) that officer Ross re- turned a larger amouut of money collected by bina for the Corporation in oy tban any other Police officer.
