d < LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Tus Paayen Mexrixcs.—The unusually bot ‘weather, and the rainy aspect of the clouds yes- did not prevent a goodly number of people Of Both -exes from attending the afternoon prayer Meeting held at Rev. Dr. Sunderland's. Four- end-e-balf street Presbyterian Church. The zeal and ardor which bas animated and sustained the ex and lay-members of the various churches the prayer meeting cause throng hb the hot sum- mer mipaths, ix indeed worthy of all praixe, and ia sufficient of itself to cause the most indifferent and hardened member of society to bold the of religion thus faithfully and earestiy sougat be enhanced m respectfal and serious cons: tion. The meeting of yesterday evening was characterized by matters of more than ordinary interest te those who have the success of the re- ligious efforts of those aged in this good work most deeply st heart. After the opening bymna and prayer, Rev Dr Sanderland mentioned. as an instance of the yood effect of the revival effort bere. and the depth of impressien it had made on minds hitherto careless as to their future welfare, that neiny persons, citizens of Washington, who had left the city forthe scenes of their usual sum- mer gayety—the springs—had not forgotten the impressions which bad been stamped upon their minds while in the prayer meeting; but had formed daily payer meetings there, which were well and regularly attended ; the words of ex- bertation and prayer were heard, and at some of the gatherings the proceedings had been cbarac- terized by deep and thrilling manifestations of religious awakening on the part of impenitent sinners. These instances of the presence of the Spirit of God at the watering places, were to be regarded by all as evincing the wide-spread infiu- ence of the prayer meetings among the people, and «8 an incentive to ali good christians to re- double their ardor in the cause of the salvation of souls. Another subject, which was made one of special remark and prayer, was that of the chris- tian ministry. Rev. r. Sampson, who was resent, remarked upon the necessity of a min- istry which should be d of deep and ardent piety. Many of the ministers of the Gospel of the present day were men who had been con- verted to God while engaged in their collegiate studies, and who bad entered college for the pur- pose of fitting themselves for the practice of other professions. Of these, many were the best—the most active and energetic members of the clergy. Hence the desirability of more religion among the members of our colleges and institutions of learning. Persons converted and drawn Into the fold while at college, and choosing the calling of Christ as a profession, were better fitted for that cause by reason of the devotion which they paid to it. Their theological studies were more de- vout, and their minds better prepared for the work. Thespeaker hoped that his subject would not be overlooked by the brethren in their peti tions to the Throne of Divine Grace; for they were bound to pray that laborers might be sent forth into the field. After an hour spent in alternate exhortation, singing, and prayer, the congregation were dismissed with the Doxology and the usual benediction. Firru District Porick —Since the publica- tion of our last notice, (erroneously printed “Fourth District Police Office,’’) the attention of Officers Ross and King has been specially called tothe number of street beggars (for the most part imposters) who infest that portion of Pennsylvania avenue, between Seventh and Tenth streets. To such an intolerable length bas the nuisance of street ss reached in every part of the city, and especially on the avenues and streets ropaing through the First, Second, Third and Fourth Wards, that storekeepers, housekeepers and hotel keepers find the jutrusion of these mendicants a great annoyance, and a hindrance to their respective business operations. We understand that in the course-of next week, uader instroctions from Mayor Berret, there will be a general descent upon all such offenders against the Corporation ordinance authorizing the commitment to the workhouse, in default of security, of “all persons found begyiay or drunk in and about the public streets.” The nuisance thus referred to is then, it appears, likely to be speedily abated At the Fifth District Office, (No. 452 Ninth street, between Dand E,) Henrietta Black, free hegress, Was yesterday fined 85 and costs for Luckstering in thit city without a license. At the same time, Hormsted Reed, negro. (a witness agaimst Henrietta Black.) was fined 35 and costs by Justice Thompson, for occupying a and in che Centre Market without license. hese cases were brought in by Officer King. AND YET THERE 1s Room.—Much has already been done by the authorities to remove from the streets the accumulation of filth with which the heavy rains of the early Summer left them Hooded. One considerable portion of the city, always requiring special attention from its low situation, pas not yet, however, reccived the no- (ice of the street scavengers, and to this fact at- tention is especially solicited. South of Penn- <yivania avenue, and extending from the Centre Market-Louse to the Mall, aud bounded north and south by the avenne and the city canal, the streets and gutters are generally loaded with ith and garbaye of almost every description ; aed particularly D street, and Twelfth, Thir- teenth, and Fourteenth streets ‘The grass has Leen permitted to establish a rank growth in the gutters, which should be kept clean for the pas- sage of the water, to such an extent that an ordi- nary shower of rain floods the pavements and there remains until the sun and the earth gradu- ally exhausts it. Ia drying away, a vapor of xickening and deleterions character ix given rixe to. which fnfests the whole neighborhood to the ujaty of the many residents thereabouts Com- plaints are also made of the great arcily of wa- ter la the neighborhood of Fourteenti: Which, it ix said, is owing te some misy is iment of the pumps. The walls have been erected from the foundation so far as to complete the second story, and iu some portions the third story wall is im course of construction ‘The wall facing the court is of tine gray granite, and bas a firm and substantial appearance. The outside wall is of marble, corresponding with that used ia the construction of the west and east wings. The girders are all of malleable iron, firmly cemented in the wallsat theends. The use of tren for purposes of this description in the Government buildings hax become universal now, and leads a firmness and xolidity to the whole that is not to be obtained by wooden onex ‘The work of raising granite blocks used for the court wall is much facilitated by a parallel rail- way, extending the entire length of the wing, the having the block: are transported ale point where they are to be used k. worked by three meu, hoists the blocks jute place. AccipENT.—On yesterday afternoon a German newspaper carrier named John Boltz received a serious accident by falling from a ladder which he was ascendi t the dome of the Capitol He attempted to climb the ladder and carry a bundle of papers with him, when his fe issed the rang, and be was ipitated some twenty- tive or thirty feet, strikiay upon his side and cut- ting and bruising bis hesd and limbs severely He was taken up senseless, and at first it was ap- prenended that his wounds were fatal ; but after the application of various restoratives Le so far recovered as to admit of his bein veyed to the tavern of Me Jos Gerhardt, near First street acd Maryland avenue, where a physiciaa was seat for ad bis wounds were properly dressed Contrary to all expectation, it was found that no boues led been broken, though at first it was feared that tue seail bone was fractured. For this reason we are dixposed to direct public attention to the two excursions, leaving this city to-morrow. The Powhatan goes to Norfolk and we can add notbing to the commendations of this trip we made last week. The steamer Thomas Coliyer, Captain Baker, offers a shorter and esp St trip, and one that draws so sparing- ty upon the working hours of the week, that we are persuaded she will carry down to the fresh air and salt water of Blakistone’s Island, a large number of our city denizens. Tuey will find ample and excellent uccommodations at the Pa- vilion on the Island; and will doubtless come back on Sanday night refreshed, and ready to start on another week with more zest than had they remained cooped up in the heuted city. Tae Pasces —There is no doubt that ourc ti- zens will soon be obliged again to pay high Prices for their sugar and tour. This is unplea- sant intelligence for ou: laboring classes, who, though they frequently have to increase the amount of their expenditures, seldom bave the pleasure of adding to their receipts. GEORGETOWN. Correspondence of The Star. ‘Guonsztown, July 30, 1988. Our city this morning, and for several days past has been wnusually quiet. There is hardly 2 breath of news of a public character floating in any quarter. Under our new police and ight watch systems, things bave very materially changed for the better, especially at night. Ip many sections of the town before it went into operation, quiet persons found it rather a difficult smatter to sleep or enjoy themselves in any othet manner, until the arrival of one or two o'clock, in coaseq vence of the noise-and wproar out doc 8. Especially was this the case on Saturday and Sunday nights This oe with another very obnoxious evil which jad recently sprung up, viz , the multitudes of drunken persons that were daily seen lying about the streets in certain local- ities, has been entirely remedied, to the great satisfaction of respectable persons living in the localities referred to. We really think, in all candor,. that the marked change for the better ought to be sufficient in itself to silence all clam- oring against the reformation among its eppo- nents. The Thirtieth Annual Report of the President and Directors of the Chesapeake and Obio Canal Company bas been printed, and furnishes a con- siderable amount of important information to those whose interests are in any manner con- nected with this great public improvement. The Hada ph a cursory view of the present condi- tion the entire line; the amounts expended and the present ind+btedness for repairing breaks, &c , during the last yea or two; and the reve- nue received from all sources, &c. It raps the late managers pretty severely for what the pres- ent Board consider improper fement. In speaking of dams Nos. 4 and 5 the report has the following language : “ she only hope, therefore, to render the navi- gation reliable at these points is to complete the new dams as early as practicable. About one- fifth of the masonry (or 160 feet in length) of each of these dams has been completed; and with adequate means (estimated at $100.00) it is be- lieved that both structures could be so far com- pleted during the present season as to render them secure and navigation reliable.” ‘The report further says: ‘Other portions of the canal are represented by the superintendents to huve materially deteriorated during the past two years, notwithstanding the large expenditures which have been made, and to require the utmost vigilance and such additivnal expenditures as the means of the company will a mit, to main- tain successful navigation.” We sincerely hope that the present officials will not only preach but practice vigilance, tuat the public interest may not be left to suffer aay longer in consequence of any bad management in the affairs of this indis- pensable public thoroughfare. At the meeting held at Mr. Hunter’s rooms. on Wednesday evening, seven additional mem- bers signed the constitution of the new military company, and Mr. Samuel Robertson was elected third, and Mr. John Waters fourth corporals.
