I love to suppose myself in all pussible painful Positions arising from delay, carelessness, and Procrastination. 1 fancy myself in a cab, mis- erably jammed up in a long line of carts and wagons in the midst of the great struggling eity. Ages seem to pass away, and yet the we hicles and howling drivers move not an ; and I hear an hour tolling from the tower of a neighboring church, every stroke of » Shick goes like a nail into my brain. On L go when it is too late, to find a dreadful stillness, where all was noise aud excitement a short half-hour before ; to find « clear plattorm, closed gates, careless porters, and no one to whom to unburden a heavy, self- repreaching heart. Sometimes I fancy myself arriving at a pi turesque spot in a couutry celebrated for its beauty all over the world. I am not seeking for mountains, cascades, rocks, forests, nor ruined castles, but for one whom I have been straggling to reach for many weary d llow harsh and cold sounds the precise voice of the hotel book-keeper, when he tells me that the pe 1 am in search of started that morning | tox England, and left no word or sign? Iwan- | Ger about the town from that moment, like a drunken man, listless, aimless, and with eyes reached the stroke of seven There I sit for the next two hours, while a poume of the events at the theatre passes efore my mental vision. I hear the sharp click of the prompter’s bell, and the voice of the call-boy, shouting “overture, gentlemen,” up the staircags. I see my aged dresser, who has been used to punctual men, old actors, and slow makers-up, walking franctically about the room, oetnriee where I can be, when I have to go on in an elaborate costume, in the mid- die of the first act. He taxes his memory to ascertain whether I was ever so late before, when the same Et was being performed, and he determines that [ never was. Unable to bear his mental torture any longer, he hobbles down to the hall-keeper, and finds that Ihave not yet passed into the thentre. Then commences a consultation, and the in- formation is spread behind the curtain that Mr. Sockskin has not arrived. although ho has to goon in the next scene. Prompter, actors, eall-boys, and manager, takes the alarm, and the latter dives to his room to prepare a few hasty words of apology. The moment arrives that can be no longer delayed, and the pale, nervous manager goes on in a comic dress, and, with the most heart-broken voice, and the most piteous face, that contrass ludicrously with his gay and facetious attire, tells the disappointed and indignant audience all he knows himself, namely: that Mr. Sockskin is not in the thea- tre. The curtain rings down amidst a torrent of yells, while another piece is being hastily put upon the stage, aa am gnawing my fin- ger-nails in the enforced and unwelcome soli- tude of the railway station. These are some of the phantasms of procrasti- nation and delay that a morbidly regular man like myself will occasionally call up before him in his hours of idleness. “As there are many men in the world who cannot be kept in the i FARM IN ALEXANDRIA COUNTY,VA.. i FOR SALE OR EXCHANGE FOR IM- PROVED CI PROPER 2 Y.—A Farm of fi sores, 7 miles from Washington and the anme dis: tance from Alexand town, adjoining the of Mr, rk.
