A frightfal accident happened to two of the Union Line omnibuses yesterday evening, which putin imminent peril the life and limbs of a number of young persons, while returning from Mount Auburn, whither they had been ona pic nie Yt appears that while coming down the red hill faust north of our city, the coupling pin of the omnibns in the rear broke, which caused the veshicie to rush upon the horses, and they, being Minable to resist its force, ran off. The driver, Ar. Charles Scott, was dra ‘ged from the box un- der the horses, and narrowly escaped with his life. They soon came in contact with the four- horse cozch in front, which so frightened the horses attached to it that they also started down the hill at full s The driver made every effort to stop them, but the reins broke and he was forced to jump from the box and leave them to pursue their course down High street. When they reached the junction of High and Market streets, they took the latter, and were arrested in their course by a number of persons when near the twenty buildings The females in this conch manifested great presenee of mind and remained upon their seats, eeping perfectly quiet and receiving no injury, except one young ludy, whose name we have not yet learned, who jumped out when near the resi- dence of Mr. E. A. Eliason and was slightly in- jured. The two-horse coach, to which the acci- dent occurred that caused the alarmin; affair, was upset before it reached the foot of fue bi but strange to say none of the inmates receive any injury of moment except a colored girl, ser- vant of one of the party. Just ahead of the om. nibuses, David Edes and two other youths were coming down in a buggy. They hid presence of mind to drive the horse off on the roadside and jump out Soon after one of the omnibuses came in contact with the buggy and stashed it to pieces. The youths held on to the horse, keeping him from running off also. Mr. Scott, the driver who was dragged from the box, was very seriously injured. No blame whatever. we learn, attaches to the drivers They did all that firmness and presence of mind could to rt the frightful catastrophe. We learn from Mr. King that we were misin- formed (by the superintendent) a few days since, in regard to the manufacturer of the furniture for the new custom-bouse and post office. The con- tract has not been awarded to him ‘Things and matters avout our canal docks this morning, look dreary, gloomy and lazy. Owing to the suspension of navigation upon the canal, and the ney eed of coal ae become exbausted, everything is at astand-still. The multitude of hands generally employed there have nearly all disappeared, and the place is almost as silent as a churchyard. The following shipments have been made from Ray’s dork since our report of last Saturday: By the Detmold Company—for Troy, s®hnrs. Somer- set, Miller, 175 tons, Fanny, Stokes, 110 tons; for New York, Oliver H. Lee, Soper, 239 tons By the American Ce —for Boston, schrs. Restless, Smith, 266 tons; for Philadelphia, B. L. F »Trav- 's, 95 tons; for New York, Palestine, Camburn, 260 tons, and R. A. Wood. Cranmer, 350 tons— making in the aggregate 1,525 tons. But little business has been done upon the Canal this week. Only 15 boats in all have ar- tived, + from Cumberland with coal (passed dam No. i during the high water) and the r- mainder from other points, with flour, grain, &c. The receipts for tolls at the Georgetown Collec- tor’s office for the same period amounts to $1,730. We are informed that it will require some three weeks more, under the most favorable circum- stances, to render the before mentioned dam par- sable for loaded boats. The offerings of beef cattle at the yards yester- day amounted to 350 head; 200 of which were purchased by District butchers at $1481.75 on the hoof, equal to $5239 50 nett. Old sheep and lambs $2.50. per he: Arrivats. i , Jones, fm Baltimore, oats, to D. S. Shoemaker; Sidney C.
