LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. To Apvertisers in ALEXANDRIA—Mr. Geo. E. French, in Alexandria, will receive and Promptly forward advertisements intended for ‘The Star. Those in Alexandria desiring to avail themsélves of its immense circulation to bring Their business, wants or other requirements to the notice of the public had better cali at his period- ical depot. Tre Excrrsiox ann Pic Nic of the Young Catholics’ Friend Society, of Alexandria, carried town to Glymont, yesterday, nearly a thousand of our neighbors below, as also a large number of Washingtonians. The weath was delightful; Fy brisk southerly wind tempered the heat of the sun's rays, and made the atmosphere quite pleas- ant. At 5 o'clock, the steamer Powhatan left Washington, and at 94, well freighted with a merry cargo, cast off ber lines from the Alexan- dria wharves, and, to the music of Esputa’s band, sped on her watery Way to the pavilion at Gly- mont. A pleasaut run “through broad Potomac’s hem of pine,” and the party safely disembarked and prepared for a glorious day. Soon the com- modious pavilion shook to the merry measures of the hundred dancing feet that followed Esputa’s bow through all the mysteries of “forward two,”? * ladies change,” ‘tone cross over,” « half prom. gnade,”* “swing corners,”* and ‘‘promenade all.”> ‘The dining room, under charge of the ladies of St Mary's congregation, spread its choicest viands to delight the inner man; the fountain sent its sparkling waters dancing in the sunlight; the swings vibrated their lovely burdens between earth and sky; and soon the lofty green hills that surround the pavilion on every side were check- ered with the gay dresses of little family Parties, and the snow-white @oths spread for pic-nic dinners beneath the shade So passed the morning and early afternoon ™metrityaway. The little pr. the children of St. Mary's Tueir glad shouts as they langhed and played in the wholesome gratification of their janocent souls, made hearts lighter as eyes looked on them The Powhatan, returning to Alexandria, r- mained aw and then leaving at two o'clock, arrtved at Glymont about four o'clock. Another crowd of pleasure-re-kers united with the merry party in the pastimes, then at their height, and joy was unconfined AtSo’ctock, the shrill scream of the whistle called the little folks and such ef their friends as wisbed to conclude betimes the dav’s festivities, to re-embark. A large crowd bad farewell to the pleasant throng left behind, and ina few hours were recollecting, ‘neath roof trees in Washington, Alexandria and Georgetown, the Pleasures that left no sting behind Maanwhile enjoyment lagged not at Glymont. A sailing party went dancing in their little boat over the waves, and fishing lines with alluring bait tempted, we are sorry to say, entirely in vain, the finny residents, of the Potomac to take a bite As twilight came on and the glow of sunset faded from the river, the woods gave up che scattered parties only to make the throng at the pavilion larger and more joyous For awhile the supper suspended dancing Mouths worked. this time without the aid of Esputa’s magic bow, faster than feet had done when he played * Pop goes the weasel.” A Petite allayed, Esputa took the chair, and the Sax-horn made a noise like two thousand Jews harps playing at ence, which proved to bea sig- nal to recommence dancing Fen sets were re- formed, aud between Esputa’s music and Floor- manager Latham’s enerzy every body kept mov- ing until about ten o'clock, when the steamer hove in sight and the parties re-embarked, leav- ing Glymont toquietuess and night. About half- Past eleven o'clock the boat arrived at Alexan- dria and disembarked @ throng that mide gay for awhile toe sleeping streets of that pleasant old city ‘The Washington participsnts in the evening's festivities were soon after safely landed at the foot of Sixth street, and all that remained of the hours that made up the merry day were memories that came in dreams—tlike encored ac- tors at a play’s close—with only half their gilded trappings to bow themselves off the stage To the committee in charge of the excursion, the participants owe all the thanks that are due for such complete arrangements ax assure at all — a pleasant day. Our Alexandiia friends have every reavou to be proud of themselves as caterers to wholesome public amusement. If the pic nic bas proven half as profitable as it deserved, they will need but little other aid to complete thetr contemplated improvements. Tue Orrna was well attended last night, de- spite the rather uncomfortably warm state of the weather, and the side windows of the hall hav- ing been taken out the air had good cireulation, rendering the place quite cool and pleasant. The Bobemian Girl, a favorite Opera with Washington andiences, was presented Stnee the closing of the late theatre season the Orchestra hax been enlarged so as to admit of an tnereased number of orchestrians, and according- ly the pe formance was rendered much more ef- fective than would have been otherwise. The performance went off with great eclat, each part being admirably sustained throughout. Miss Milner was hailed on her entre by a flat- tering demonstration of welcome, which was gracefully acknowledged by her. Her persona- tion of Arline was a decided hit, as the frequent and loud applause abundantly attested Mrs. Holman was excellent ax the Gipsy Queen, and impressed the audience most favorably by her powers as aa actress. as well as her abilities Count Arnhiem was superb throuzhont the performance, and gave “The heart bowed down”? with great effect. Rudolphsen as Devilsboof carried the house with him, whenever he appeared. Possessing a voice of unusual excellence, and an extremely happy naturainess of manner, he completely ideutifies himself with his part, and is in every respect, for the time, the genuine article, and no imitater. Mr. Holman, as the popinjay Floris‘an, cave to that character unusnal pith, expecially in the scene in which, being a little “ fou,” be falls into the clutches of the Gipsies and looses his per- sonal! decorations. Mr. Frazer, as Thaddeus, was really excellent, and was frequentiv encored. Mr. H_ © Cooper conducted the orchestra with great efficiency, considering it was the opening might The opera was well performed in all respects. and was a most refreshing musical treat to the andience There will be a crowded audience to-night, when it will be repeated How w !T ’—A correspondent asks if Mayor Magruder did not solicit a specisl police force prior to the municipal election in is57, and have it denied him by the Kaow Ne ngs in the City Councils, who doubtiess wished their imported allies to carry on their nefarious acts? We are of the opinion th vase; and ifso,.how much every tld be indebted to the Common Council whose official term bes just expired for promoting slaw and order” by the establishment of a special police —Union ef this MITMing It is so, without adeubt. Before nine o'clock thix morning, one magistrate issued four warrants for different individuals. and all on the oaths of fe- males This be considered a very lively begin- ning of the day, though very unprofitable to the Justice and officers, The service of these war- Tauts are an expense tothe magistrate, and a loss of time to the officer. ‘They are the most numer- ous of all United States cases, requiring more time and labor than any other, and the officers Ket no pay for them Sexrrisine a Rance —This morning, abont twe o'clock, the guards on the beats fiom Four- and-a-balf to Third sts, while passing through the well-known Jackson-Hall alley, came upen # <quad of colored individuals, who were em- ployed in a game of ‘oid sledge,”? quarter acor- ner.. Nodoubt the brain from which it emanated is richly stored. ‘with sach comfortable delusions, such as intellect, and even soul, being a monopoly of the self-styled lords of creation. Now, 1! am sure that the saying— ‘: When ignorance is bliss, it is folly to be wine,” ‘was intended for the originator of this nonpariel of wisdom and his fortunate companions. Now by what right do men profess to be the sole pos- sessors of this God-like attribute? Have we not examples in history where woman has not only equalied but surpassed men in the rapidity of her literary attainments? Now you will say that these instances are rare. But why isitso? Is not woman too often educated but to please the senses? Is she not taught that it does not become ber to strive for litetary attainments? hat it is only the heart which she can hope to influence. But let woman be subjected to the same mental discipline as men and see if she wonld not soon convince those epitomes of sense that she is their compare tn intellect But it is not the object of man to acknowledge the mental capi c ty ef woman; for, are we not told td a ene male writer, that “if a wo- man be possessed of mental superiority, she should be careful to hide it fromthe other nex; for man seldom forgives the intellectual superi- orityof woman.*’ And this fs the reason that we hear such expressions as‘ The dear little crea- tures were made to love, but not to judge.’ “Tis by such means as these, men strive to keep wo- man in subjection to their will. It is by thus cultivating the feelings at the expense of the rea- son, that they become more pliant tools in the hands of their would-be rulers. The world was in he pes pepe darkness while knowledge was confined to the priesthood. But the world is still in darkness, in comparison with the intellectual ealightenment it will attain when the female half of creation has equa! advantages with the men It is from the mother’s lips the embryo great man imbibes his first impressions of life; and it is well known that ideas formed in youth are more lasting than those in after years, and that they tend to influence our whole future life. Now, if those impressions be false, (such as they neces- sarily must be, the mother being ignorant and consequently narrow-minded.) those years are worse than lost; for it takes longer to eradicate than it took to form them; and thus, be can never arrive to that intellectual enlightenment which would have been his had his first views of life been correct. ‘Thus man defeats his own object when he would threw obstacles in the way of woman's mental advancement; for, that she is capable of great mental achicvements, let history vouch. Witnes< Gabrielle de Chatelet, the fellow stu- dent of Voltaire; Elizabeth, of England, who governed with a vigor, firmness, penetration, and address unsurpassed by any person that ever fill- ed a throne; Catharine of Russia, who formed a code of laws for the government of that vast em- pire—noted for their wisdom, justness, and adap- tation to the wants of her people, and which are still preserved in a golden vase in the Imperial Academy at Petersburg. ‘These are but a few of the examples that go to prove of what woman is capable, when she throws aside those barriers of education and prejudice by which her energies are crippled ant her mind weakened. For it is weil known that the mina, unlike everything else, becomes strengthened by use. And woman is told that she must cultivate the heart, for ‘To man belongs the empire of the mind.” Itis this ridiculous nonsense which makes the generality of our sex seem such “butterflies of fashion "’ For the mind eraves nourishment; and if wholesome food be denied, it will feed on f-ivolities, and thus, chamelion-like, partake of their nature. It is these disadvantages, under which women labor, which give rise to all of those fine sayings—such as “Ob frailty, thy name is woman.”’ But take an uneducated man and woman, and see if itis not the woman which displays the greater amount of intelligence. Witness Mrs. Bagnet, in Dickens's, Bleakhouse. It is this fact which reconciles me to the yreater cultiva- tion of man’s mind, for it seems to need it. Leey F alias Roraciz A. Tue HorticvtteraL ExiiBition to-day pre- sented new attractions. From the gardens of Mr. John Saul came fresh specimens of straw- berries, some of them being new varieties and of rich flavor. Among the best we notice the fol- lowing varieties, which are said to be the best in point of flavor and growth, the “Comte De Flan- dre,’ Triumph de Gaud,” seedling ‘Eliza,’ and others. It is said by horticulturists that the vicinity of Washington produces better straw- berries than any other portion of the country, the soil and climate being more favorable to their perfect growth. The specimens on exhibition at the Melodeon fully bear out this statement Mr. Cammack also presents, this morning, some beautiful collections of the Hovay and Vic- toria strawberry. Dr. P: *s table is also fragrant with fresh flowers, Roses, Petanias, and many other varie- ties. Mr. Saul exhibits, in all their beanty and deli- cacy of pink and scarlet tint, specimens of the Lord Raglan, Emperor Napoleon, Madain Mason, Glorie de France, Ornaments Jacdines, and Per- petual Rose The exhibition in all respects to-day showed Treat taste of arr; ment. and was deliciously specimens of florieulture. night closes the suow, with the additional attraction of a fine band of music.
