Such a law would be a jong stride towards an era of law and order among us. The bill appropriates $15,000 towards the purchase of four steam Py ee and $12,000 towards the establishment of a fire alarm and police telegraph. ‘To any one who bas ever seen the steam fire-cn- gine in operation its advantages over the manual engine is too obvious to require any explanation, one of them being worth at least three of the engines now in use in our city, and when well worked by experienced engineers will do the work of four common engines. With the estab- lishment of half a dozen of these steam engines here, and the forthcoming water works in full operation, our citizens may be pretty well at ease with regard the devouring element. ‘Tue greatest schemes that human wit can forge, Or bold ambition dares to put in practice, Depend upon our husbanding a moment.
