The Chair appointed as the committee Messis. Milter and Rett The Board then tock a short recess On r mbling, a resolution was received from the lower Board, which had passed that Board. #5 follows Resolved. (he Board of Aldermen concurting,) That the Mayor be, and be is hereby most re- spectfully requested, In making his appointments of special potice to serve on the day of election, to make said appointments irrespective of party. On motion of Mr. Donoho, the resolution wis laid on the table Mr. Goddard moved that a commit be ap- Pointed to wait on the Mayor and urge upon bim the necessity ef attending to the duties of bis etfice in the City Hall every day during this week Mr. Goddard stated that, in making this mo- tion, he felt it incumbent apon him to state that the annul election being close at hand it was rsolutely necessary that some actiou be had by ¢ authorities with a view to the preservation of the peace on that day. Anvbedy who would walk sbout the streets, and cast their eves about them, ceuld not be impressed with the ur- xent necessity for instant Hs eitosa action in the re Ss. A jeint resoluticn, authorizing the Mayor to appoint special police for the ensuing election, iad pomcd the Councils two weeks ago eral of the Wards had selected men to serye peeial police, and their names had been sent tothe Mayer for confirmation. The blank com missions Bad been printed and sent to the May- ons effice for his signature The resolution had le sti wthe Mayer also to furnish ch police as he should see appeiut. All proper measures bad been don the part of the Councils, and, strange ta sey, the Mayor bad as yet taken no action at all, he had not even been fn bis office since the the last meeting of the Board. He bad appa ently abendoned the ship to the fury of the im- peeding storm, ard it could not fail to be seen that he exbibited a disposition to work all the injary be could jut at the moment when his ser- Vices were most needed. Such conduct, Mr G. continued, was inconsist- ent aud derelict, and something must be done to save the city frem bloodshed. Feeling a deep interest in the peace of the city, he would rather the Corporation shouid spend teu thousand dol- lars to preserve order on that day, than that one baman life should be sacrificed through neglect The eyes of the whele country were directed to this city at the present time; and the question of the utinvation of the seat of the Federal Gov- ernment here perhaps depended upon the manner which the peace should be preserved on the coming election day. Several other members also addressed the Board to the same effect Mr. Riggs moved that the resolution which had just passed, notifying the lower Board of the Feadiness of this Board to adjourn sine die, be Teralled; that a committee of two be a »pointed to carry this mesxage to the lower Board. and that they be instructed to inform that B: whe bs td that this Board should adjourn they would ad- to meet on next Thursday, at { o'clock, p , or any day previons to that, should the Mayor deem it uecesaary to convene them he motion was carried; and the Chair ap- ited Messrs.
