Phe Court reserved its de- Cision for the preseut, A Most Drscracerur Ovrrack —We have ere this had occasion to call the attention of the authorities to the outrages of the crowd so to assemble upon the corners of Sixth street and Pennsylvania avenue. On Friday night last, between 10 and 11 o'clock, Thomas Francis, a Printer, some sixty years of age, passing along the avenue there, hearing some one utter a polit- jeal cry uttered oue on the other side, when be Was instantly assaulted and a fight ensucd. Mr. Richard Sherkell a respected and respectable citizen who was Brown's hotel, hearing the muss, Went to the point, and. with others, sepa- rated the combatants. Two watchmen sbortly afterwards came up, and oue of them arrested the bleeding old man, when Mr Sheckell re- maried that his antagonist should properly be taken into custody also. This the other wateh- maan did promptly. An individnal in the crowd throwing aside bis coat, then exclaiming that he would punisi Mr. Sheckell for bis interference, commenced an assanit upon him, in which be Was assisted by the original assailant of the old inan, Who broke away from the watchman. Be- tween the twe, Mr. Sheckell was severely beaten and kicked. The upshot was that the old man was the only person arrested, the other parties escaping in the melee. Itis Mr. Sueckeil’s opin- jon that the watebmen exerted themselves to ar- rest them, but in vain Were this oceurrence the first of the kind that has of late taken place at that most publie point in Washington eity, it would reflect bad enough in all con nee upon the capacity of the police and night watch to preserve the lives and limbs of qniet aud respectable eitizens trom imminent pert at the bands of persons whose conduct proves then to be outlaws. Will not the Mayor station there at all times of the day and nighta police force sufficient to put a stop to such oceur- renees’? We know well how small the police and night watch are in comparison to the re- quirements of the city at this time, yet it is very certaih that at that most frequented and con- spicuous point the lives of quiet citizens watking along wilhout tarning to the right of left almost daily in imminent peril at the Lands of these who with perfect impunity huock down, kick, and otherwise biutally treat whom they will, Surely it isin the power of the anther ef Washington to hold such violators of the pub- tic peace there in check, if anywhere. Wuat Next?—We have just seen, on exbib'- tion at the store of C.
