A lecture recently delivered in Carlisle, Eng- land, by the Rey. A. Mursell, contained the following amusing but instructive passage: The point to which I have next to direct atten- tion is manliness in speech. There are many Young men who seem to consider essential to manliness, that they should be mastersof slang. The 5 Pay world, like its brother, the swell mob, a language of its own; but this dog- English extends far beyond the sporting world. it comes with its ho of barbarous words, threatening the entire extinction of genuine English! alien just listen for 2 moment to our fast young man. or the ape of a fast young man, whe thinks that to be a man he must talk ia the dark phraseology of slang. If he docs anything on his own responsibility, he doez it on bis uwn “hook.” If he sees anything re- markably good, he calls it a “stunner,”* the superlative of which is a “regular stunner ” it a man is requested to pay a tavern bill, he is asked if he will “Stand Sam?”’ If he meets ® savage-looking dog, he calls him an “ugly eustomer.’’ If he mocts an eccentric man, he ealls him a “rummy old cove.’’ A sensible man iga“‘chap that's up to snuff.’ A man net remarkable for good sense is a “cake” —a “flat’’—a “spoon’’—a “stick”.—“ his mother does not know he is out." A doubtful as: tion is to be “told to the marines.” An in- credible statement ia ‘all gammon.’’ Our young friend never scolds, but ‘blows up"’— never pays, but ‘stumps up’’—never finds it difficult to pay, but is «* rie up’ ’—never feels fatigued, but is ‘used up.” He has no hat, but shelters his head beneath a “tile.” He Wears no neckeloth. bat surrounds his throat with a “choker."’ He lives nowhere, but there is some place where he hangs out.’’ He never goes away or withdraws, but he “ bolts’’—he “slopes"’—be “mizzles"’—he “makes himself searce’’—he “‘walks his chalks’’—he «makes tracks’’—he “cats his stick”’—or what is the same thing, he “cuts his lucky.’’ The highest compliment you can pay him is to tell him that he is a “regular brie! He does not profess to be brave, but he prides himself on being “plucky."’ Money is a word which he has for- gotten, but he talks a good deal about “tin,” and “the needful,’ “the rhino,” and “ready."’ When a man speaks, he “spouts when he holds his peace, he ‘shuts up '—when he is humiliated, he is “taken down a peg or aud “made to sing small."’ Ho calls his his legs “pins.” To be per- plexed, is to be * flummaxed’ —to be disap- inted. is to be “dished’—to be cheated is to “sold”"—to be cheated clearly, is to be , “done brown.”’ Whatsoever is fine. is ‘‘nob- by”’—whatsoever is shabby. is “seedy “—what- soever is pleasant, is“ jolly.’’ He says “Blessed if he does this, blowed if he does that.” “banged” if he does the other thing; or he excla‘ins **My eye!” “my stars!’” If you asked him which were his stars, he would be “flummaxed.” Then he swears “ By George” es the Lp sot on — oe rae he selects “the piper that played before Moses.”” a ated deat of this slang is harmless the terms are, I think, very express there is much in slang that is objectionable. For example, as Archdeacon Hare observes in one of his sermons, the word “governor,” as applied to a father, is to be reprchended. have heard a young man cal! his father the “relieving oiliver."’ Does it not betray on the part of young men great ignorance of the pa- ternal and filial relationships, or great con- tempt furthem. Their father ix to such young men merely a governor—merely the represen- tative of authority. Innoeentiy enough, the expression is used by thousands of young men who venerate and love their parents: but only hink of it, and I am sure you will admit that it cold, hearties: word when thus applied, and one that eught forthwith to be abandoned. There he halted and rested for the recruit and refreshment of the sick and wounded for a few days. The citizens of Tuscaloosa, then a small village, got up @ public dinner tu the General. A eputation of militia officers, armed cap-2-ple, went to Carthage to extend the invitation to Jazkson. They found him busy, on foot, near the main road, dismounted, and with well set phrase, their spokesman invited bim to the dinner. ‘For how many bare you made Provision?” asked Jackson.“ For all my men ?”’ “No, only for yourself and ofticers.”” “Then,” replied the old hero, “I nor officer of mine will not eat a dinner not provided for all my boys!’ Thon turning on bis heel ab- ruptly, be left them. je pour militiamen were sadly -disoomfite] and mortified at this rebuff. But worse was in store for them. A quartermasier, or his us- sistant, had laid his hands upon every horse of the delegatfn, and claimed them for public service. The plan is this: Procure a dat dish of porcelain, into which pour water ; place upon a vase of flowers, and uver the vase # glags-bel! with its rim in the water. The nir thst eurrounds the flowers being confined be- neath the bell-glass. y moist with water, that rises into it in the form of vapor As fast as the water becomes condensed it runs down the side of the bell-glass inte the dish ; aod if weans be taken to enclose the water the outside of the bel!-giass, so a3 to prevent it evaporating into the sir of the sitting-room, the atmosphere uround the dowers is continually damp. Walter H. Shube, formerly editor of the Shield and Ban- ner, at Mansfield, Obio, gives aclear account of his sensations at the time of the accident on the Central Railroad, at Sanquoit Creek, by which six persons were killed, and about forty wounded. Ie says it is the third time he has been through a similar scene within nine months. The first intimation Mr. Shube had that all was not right on the train, he heard a shriek apparently from a female voice, immed ly followed by a cracking sound. Having made up his mind that the surest way of escaping injuries upon such oecasions, was to make fast to something, be grasped his seat firmly, and was immediately carried, seat and all, over the bead of the man in front of him. He felt the fire flash from his eyes by coming in eol- liston with the head of the unknown wan, who was lying dead in the baggage room. Mr. Sbube says he distinctly pot g the crushing sound of breaking bones as the old man was thrown against the side of the car. He says it sounded in his ears like that produced by a do “eraunchine the bones of a partridge,” an was to him the most horrible noise ho ever heard. [> The Paris correspondent of the London Times furnishes an interesting summary of the financial operations of the French Government: The revenue of the empire is derived from direct taxes, giving a total of 67,555,979/. as the ordinary income of the State. The grand total of revenue is placed at 70,529,313/. Dif- ferent items of ordinary expenditure, though some have been greatly increased, give a total of 69,453 337/., to which mut be added 1,114.- 953/. for extraordinary works—making the total expenditure 70,608,290/. ‘The inereaze of the national liabilities since the revolution of Is48, is represented by an increase in the amount of dividends equal to 5,520.000/. yearly. The successive governments of France have received in the course of the last ten years 112,400,000/. by way of loans over and above the annual revenue. It would consequently appear that France is addiug to her national debt at the average rate of 11,250,000/. sterling every year. ee eneert ee Presayrerian GeNeRAL Asseusiy.—The Geueral Assembly of the Presbyterian Chureh (oO. 5.) has been in session at New Orleans for sev- eraldays. Dr. Breekinridge moved that the report be spread upon the minntes, and that the committee be discharged from the further consideration of this subject After discussion, in opposition to Dr. B.'s mo- tion, the overture was placed upon the docket of business.
