Tue May Fastivar at tax Write Horse — The #unday Schoo! attached to St. Matthew's church spent yesterday most pleasantly at the White House Pavilion. The school, with a large number of its friends, embarked at § o'clock a. m., on board the steamer Grorge Page. Capt. Price, and after a delightful trip were safely landed at their journey’s end. The morning passed most pleasantly exploring the adjacent woods, swinging, or tripping it on the light fantastic toe to the music of Esputa’s band At 11 o'clock, the May-day ceremonies took piace with ail the flowery splendors of the spring. The coronation was beautifully per- formed, and was witnessed with manifest de- light by a large concourse. That over, Her Ma- jesty, Miss Fannie Harvey, ao of May, came forth in trinmph, attended y the ladies of her ber court, as follows: first maid of honor, Miss > rol; second maid, Miss Mary Brid- third m Miss Elizabeth MeCarthy ; fourth maid, Miss Isabella Davis; orator and Page, master Jas. Pilling. During the ceremonial, Rev. Jas. B. Donelan occupied a piace beside the throne, and when the mimic court concluded théir salutations tothe new crowned queen, he was loudly cailed on for aspeech. He declined, however, saying that the eloquence of his petite friends had left him no- thing tosay. Father Donelan has just returned from a trip to Rome and the Holy Land = Travel seems to have dealt well with him, for he never looked beiter or seemed happier than yesterday, surrounded by the little ones of Lis late charge at St. Matthew's, or receiving the congratula- tions on bis safe return which were showered upon him from all points. At La!t-past three o’clock, the steamer Thos. Collyer, Capt. Baker, reached the White-house, large reinforcement of pleasure seekers. Dinner was quickly discussed, substantials with their lighter auxiliaries, disappeared, and music ealled to the dancing saloon, where quadrilies were the order of the day until supper. After supper, the George Page received on board the children and a number of others, and moved away homeward with a delighted party, leaving music keeping time to bounding feet at the Pa- vihien, where danciug was kept up until a late hour. The seeoud party embarked for home in the Thomas Collyer, at ten o'clock, and the day With its joys bad pasxed. Much credit is due uittee of arrange- eccurred to mar the pleasure of the guests or to disturb the quiet amusements of the festival. To Captains Price and Baker, the friends of this ax of every other excursion, which passes in the boats under their charge, owe thanks for everything that foresight or ¢ tersy can do. to add to the comfort of the party. Gxronortown, May 15, 1953. The union prayer meetings have contin. ued this week at the Congress street M. PSelrurch, and bave been changed from tri-weekly to daily. At the meeting yesterday afternoon, notwith- standing the very gloomy condition of the wea- ther, there was quite a good attendance. The exercises were conducted by the Revs. Messrs. Speak, Wilson, Bocock, Remick and Cooper. There is also to be held at this point, during the week, a datly morning union meeting from 6 to 7 o'clock. These meet) ngs have certainly effected considerable improvement in the morals of our city. and doubtless every lover of morality and eg order would be loth to see them discon- u We learn that the boats were, in con: of the fall in the water, com: dam number four on the C esaprake and Ohio Canal on Friday last. The breach is said to be about one hundred feet in length. The work of Tepairis to be pushed forward by a strong force of hands to completion with all possible speed. From all the information we can ther, from reliable sources, we incline to the belief that the work canuot be completed short of three to four weeks. The delay will serve to enable the coal companies located in our city to get their wharves clear of the great quantities of coal which have accumulated during the last four weeks. Two more coal companies, we are informed, are to be located in our city, each of whem will soon commence the work of preparation for re- ceiving and shipping the article by the construc- tion of wharves, car tracks, &c. Our fishermen are beginning to return home. Mr Theker bas atready returned, and Mr. Crop- ley, we learn, cuts out the early part of this week. Me. Clark, at Syeamovre landing, has been rather more successful the last few days, and still holds on. Upon the whole, we are informed that the season has been a very unprofitable one to the large lower-river landings. Our river wharves this morning look quite lively. The following vessels have arrived since yesterday morning, most of which were towed up by the Potomac Tow Company’s tugs: Sehars Mist and Prowess. from New York, with cement to Capt. Meigs; Rio Grande, Parker, Philadel- phia, coal to Dickson, Gordon & Co: Embark, Donoho, Philadelphia; steamer Col bia, 1 pets from Baltimore, to Hyde & Davidson; K. The accident on the Alexandria and Washing- ton railroad, mentioned in your issue yesterday, took place at the curve near the basin of the Alexandria canal. The woman killed was Mrs. Mary Cline, residing on Queen street, near Co- lumbus street. Coroner Neale heid and held an inquest npon the body yesterday afternoon, which Tesulted in the following verdict : “ Mary Cline came to Ler death by being aeci- dentally ran over by the Alexandria and Wash- ington train, when said train was slowly moving, and no blame on the part of the officers thereof.”° The oceursence excites much feeling in the commanity. ‘The neighborhoed of the O:ange and Alexan- aria Depot winessed a shooting match on Satur- day evening. Rumors to the discredit of a young woman, residing in that Vicinity, having been traced to several parties, she called, in company with her brother, upon Mr. Willian Pope. and demanded a withdrawal of certain charges. Pope reatirmed them, when she shot at bins, the bail passing between his arm and side. and just te lng his clothes. fler brother then drew a pistol, and a fight ensued, in which, it is alleged, Pope came off victorious. The steamer James Guy, on Ler way up the river yesterday with the thiree-muasted brigantine Ephraim Willizms in tow, broke the braces and bursicd the cylinder bead cf her engine. The accident occurred about a mile above Fort Wasb- lagton. The Guy will be repaired imunediately ‘The lightning of Saturday's storm shivered the mainmast of the schooner ‘I. With » comm us post ottice, and such accommodating gentlemen as Postmas- ter Asbby, Deputy Postmaster Padgett, and As- sistants Boutz, Garth and Lee, Alexandria will certainly have no cause to complain of her postal arrangements.
