[ Described’ by Thomas H. Benton ] _ The Senate had pas-ed. some years before, on Gen. Jackson, a resolution condemning the re- moval of the deposits, de., as high-handed ex- ceutive acts, “in derogation of the Constitution of the United States.” Mr. Benton offered a resolution for expunging this condemnation ‘The struggle continued for years. It reached ita close in 1837. A fierce and most exciting debate (Jan. 14, Is37,) in whieh the whole strength of Calhoun, Webster and Clay was brought to bear against the expunging process, had carried the day's sitting far into night, and what followed is thus deseribed by Col “Denton in his “ Dhirty Years’ View,” pp. 730, 731: Midnight was now approaching. The denso masses which filled every room in the lobbies and galleries remained immovable. No one — ut—no one could get in The floor of the 3 nate was crammed with privileged per- sons, and it seemed that all Congress was there. Expeetation and determination to see the con- clusion was depicted upon every countenance. Jt was evident there was to be no adjonrnment until the vote should be taken—until the deed was done; and this aspect of invincible determi- nation had its effect upon the ranks of the op- pesition. They began to falter under a peraist- ence, for they alone now did the speaking; and while Mr. Web-ter was yet reciting his protest, two Senators from the opposite side wno had been best able to maintain their equanimity came round to the author of thie View and said: “ This question has degenerated into a trial of nerves and muscles. It has become a question of physical endurance; and we see nv use in wearing ourselves out to keep off for a few hours longer what has to come before we sepa- rate. We see that you are ableand determined to carry your measure; so call the vote as soon as a perce shail say po more.”* Mr. Webster concluded No one rose. There was a pause—a dead silence—and an intense feeling. Presently the silence was invaded by the single word “+ Question’ —the parliamenta- ry call for a vote—rising from the seats of dif- ferent Senators. One blank in the reselve re- mained to be filled—the date of its adoption It was done. The Acting President of the Senate, Mr. King, of Alabama, then directed the roll to be called. The yeas and nays had been previously ordered and proceeded to be called by the Secretary of the Senate, Mr. Asbary Dickins. Forty-three Senators were Present answering, five absent. The yeas were— Yeas—Messrs. Benton, Brown, Buehanan, Dana, Ewing of Illinois, Fulton, Grundy, Hub- hard, King of Alabama, Linn, Morris, Nicho- p Niles, og ee Robinson, Ruggles, Sevier, Strange, Tallmadge, Tipton » Wall, Wright pica eien, Nars—Messrs. Bayard, Black, Calhoun, Clay, Crittenden, Davis, Ewing of Obio, Hend- ricks, Kent, Knight. Moore, Prentias, Preston, Robbins, Southard, Swift, Tomlinson, Webster, White. ‘Tho passage of the resolution was announced from the chair. Mr. Benton rose and said that nothing now remained but toexecute the or- der of the Seuate, which he moved be done forthwith. It was ordered ace dingly. The Seoretary thereupon produced the original manuscript journal of the Senateand opened at the page which contained the condemnaxtory sentence of March 265, 1534, proceeded in open Senate to draw a square of broad black lines around the sentence, and to write across its face in strong letters these words : “+ Expunged be order of the Senate, this 1th day of March, _Up to this moment the erowd in the great circular gallery, looking down upon the Senate. though sullen and » ng In their looks made no manifests feeling; and it was doubtless not the intention of Mr. Webster to excite that manifestation when he referred to their nambers, and expressed his ignorance of the feeling with ch they would see the deed done which he so deprecated. Doubtless no one intended to excite that crowd. mainly com- Posed as usual, since the bank question began, of friends of that institution; but its appear- ance became such that Senator Linn, tho col- league of Senator Benton, Mr. Geo. W. Jones, since Senator from Iuwa, and others, sent out and brought in arms; other friends gathered about him, among them Mrs. Benton, who, re- mewbering what had happened toGeneral Jack- son, and Knowing that. after him her husband was most obnoxious to the bank party, had her aaxiety sufficiently elicited to wish to be near him, in this concluding scene of seven years contest, with that groat moneyed power. Things were in this state, when the secretary of the Senate began to perform the expunging process on the manuscript journal. Instantly, a storm of hisses, gre and vociferations arose from the left wing of the circular gallery, over the head of Senator Benton. The presi ing officer promptly gave the order which the rules pre- seribe in such cases, to clear the gallery. Mr Benton opposed the order, saying Lhope the galleries will not be cleared, as many innocent persons will be ex:luded who have been guilty of nv viclation of order. Let the rufians who have made the disturbance alone be punished ; let them be apprehended J hope the sergeant-at-:rms will be directed to enter the gtllery and seize the ruffians, ns- certaining who they are in the best way he can. Let him apprehend them and bring them to the bar of the Senate. Let him seize the bank ruffians. I hope that they will not now be suffered to insult the Senate, as they did when it was under the power of the Bank of the Vaited States. when raffians, with arms upon them, insulted us with impunity Let them be taken and brought to the bar of the Senate. Here is one just abuye me that may easily be identitied —the bank rufians Mr. Benton knew that he was the object ot thie outrage, and that the way to treat these subaltern wretches was to defy and seize them, and have them dragged as criminals to the bar of the Senate. They were congregated imme- diately over bis head, and hac evidently col- lected into that place. Mis motion was agreed to. The order to clea; ¢ galleries was re- , the order to the disturbers was given, and immediately executed by the ener- getic sergeant-at-arm*, Mr. John Shackford, and his assistants.. The ring-leader was seized and browght to the bar. This sudden example intimidated the rest, and the expunging pro- cess was performed in quiet. The whole scene was impressive: but ne part of it so much so as to see the great leaders who for seven long years had warred upon Genera! Jackson. anda thousand times pronounced him ruined, each rising in his place, with painful reluctance, to confess themselves vanquished—to admit his power, and their weakness—and to exhale their griefs in unavailing reproaches and im- potent deprecations. It wasa tribute to his invincibility which cast into the shade all the eulogiam of his friends. The gratification of Genera! Jackson was extreme. Ile give a grand dinner to the expungers (as they were ealled) and their wives, and being too weak to et at the table, he only met the company. placed the “head expanger’ withdrew to his sick chamber. The anniversary of the birth of Henry Clay was celebrated by a festival at the Commercial Ifotel, Memphis, om the evening of the 12th April. Hon. H.3S. Foote presided. There was agood time generally. Among those who made speeches were the President, and R. H. Stan- ton, of Kentueky. Mr. Foote related an inter- os incident as follows : I shall never forget a seene which eccurred in the city of Annapolis, in Maryland, during the summer of i800. Mr. Clay had become greatly exhausted with the severe labors through which he had been passing; those labors, a continuation of which was so soon af- terwards to terminate his valuable life. An old and valued schoolmate of my own, Senator Pratt, of Maryland, invited Mr. Clay and a few others of his friends to spend a day or two at his hospitable mansion. Mr. Clay accepted the invitation, and proceeded to Annapolis, at- tended by several gentlemen quite well known to the country. Mr. Dickinson, of New York, was among the invited guests, Mr. Bright, of Indiana, and Mr. Dawson, of Georgia, whom ‘ou all know so well, and valued so Bighly. i ad the honor of being in company also. The day after we got to Senator Pratt's, it was pro- posed that we should take a short walk through the city, and visit that ancient, time-honored building, within the precincts of which the Rev- olutionary Congress held its session at the close of the War of Independence. We went thither accordingly, and entered the venerated room where Washington per- formed one of the most striking acts of his life. I allade to the surrender of his sword to the Continental Congress. When Mr. Clay entered the hall he inquired for the spot where Wash- ington stood when this seene was enacted. It was pointed out tohim. He stepped forward and occupied it for a moment, gazing solemply and earnestly around the room, which is pre- cisely in the condition it was in when occupied by Congress. A crowd of citizens gathered about him. I never saw him when his appear- ance and bearing were altogether so majestic andimposing. Ile secmed reaily to be for the moment the grand personage upon whese glo- ries his mind was meditating The multitude assembled demanded to hear his august voice. He addressed them. The speech was short but impressive beyond any orator cal effort I have ever witnessed. He took a rapid view of the condition of the country ; the commotion exist- ing; the danger of the hour; the expedients necessary to be resorted to in order to rescue the Republic from destruction. He especially enlarged upon the danger of showing too much respect at such a moment to party and its be- hests ; closing with the momorable declaration, “That party shall in future he my party which shall provemost faithful to the Union.” -_—__—_s2e-— A Naw Breep.—Fruit dealers should be cautious in purchasing oranges and lemons, arriving here from Philadelphia. Tie Gazette, of that city says : Among the recent arrivals at this port was a Sicilian barque. She is now lying at the foot of Chesnut street. She brought a eargo of oranges and lemons of the very finest descrip- tion. She also brought a quantity of live stock not represented on her bills of iading—a few mnyrinds of cockroaches, of a style an propor- tions which ¢annot do otherwise than improve the species now known here. These roaches are from two and a half to three inches in length—fat ones still larger. Some of them are called ‘scorpion back,’ and carry around a style of sheli that crunches under one’s boots like a remarkably tough egg shell. These fel- lows are very queer looking. One of them. we think, wonld throw # nervous lady into hys- te! They are dark brown in color, and when running look like « p of highly var- nished mxhogany under great excitement. In the way of speed they will teach our roaches a lesson. They run with remarkable rapidity, and soon found their way into the neighboring stores. As every box of oranges contained a goodly supply ot them, they will doubtiess be heard from hereafter. Should any fail in get- ting a supply, they can do so by taking a pair of tongs and a stout basket down to the fost et Chesnut sireet. Lovers of entomology will do well to secure a few ‘scorpion backs,’ as xpec- imeus of the land of mendicity and laziness. A New Way to Pay O1p Dents.—The Glen’s Palls Republican gives a long aceount of a novel way of paying vld debts A “eit- izen of standing,’’ whose autograph was in the possession of a large number of gentlemen re- siding in and about Glen's Falls, suddenty be- came “inelancholy,”’ and spent most of his time in lonely meditation beside lamp posts and other convenient ‘leaning’? places, while it began to be whispered that he was insane, and the remark “poor follow,”’ fell from the lips of all his friends and acquaintanecs. At length the melancholy gentleman disappeared, and it was feared that he bad ‘‘made away’? with hunself. The holders of his autograph offered to dispose of the same at a heavy discount. Fortunately for them, as they supposed, a per- gon was found who offered to purchase the de- mands against the missing man, and did so for a mere trifle. A few days after all the notes and accounts bad been thus purchased, the misanthrope reappeared, and hunting up his friend who had riz the rrsh of purchasing the demands, handed over to him the amount ad- vanced, and thus paid all his debts at a dis- count of 75 percent. He is now ready to com- mence operations anew, with a handsome cash capital ! EA “feller” coming home from California had a monster rattlesn: in a wicker cage, which he deposited with his other plunder un- der his bed at Chagres. The room contained fitty beds—half-full of drunken and sick -‘fel- lers.’’ During a teinporary absence of tho owner, the enake got loose, and the owner, com ing in and finding the critter gone, yelled out everlasting misery! who’s seen my watcb- mun?’? Many heads popped up from the flea fested, dirty beds, but nobody had seen the ng article. “What was he, old feller, you're inquirin for ’’’ sayya bald-headed man. © Why, my watchinan ; all my duat is under my bed, here, and I left a guard with it, but he's gone.”’ “Guard! was he a nigger ora white feller?”’ ‘-No! he was aCa!ifornta rattle- snake—nine feet long, and fifty-two rattles on his tail. Have any of you fellers seen the tar- critter crawlin ‘round here?’’ They hadn't, but all who were able te get out of bed and mizzle did so, in a bunch. A Goon Joxe, net Pout Suaxpen.—The fol- lowing good one is related of the mate of one of the Wheeling and Pittsburg packets. The boat was lying up at the town of Liverpool on her downward trip, when the freight was being transferred to the wharf boat. All had been removed but one barrel, which the mate or- dered to be rolled in the wharf boat.
