Destaective Firne.—About 12 o'clock last nighta fire was discovered breaking out in the store of Stephen Brown, on Seventh street, near the corner of Marylandavenue. A large number of the citizens of the neighborhood quickly as- sembied and endeavored to extinguish the fire, but all their efforts proved unavailing. The flames soon spread to the adjoining buildings, and in the space of two hours reached fram Hughes's floricultural gardens to the corner of Maryland avenue, and around on Maryland ave- nue west (Ouruing a number of workshops on Maryiand avenue) to the corner of Eighth street. The buildings destroyed belonged to Messrs. George E Kirk, AL. Holmead, Wm. Hughes, J. Cornwell and J.B. Grinnell, ‘and were occu- pied as follows : The corner store, a two-story brick, was occu- pied by J. F. B. Purcell, grocer, whose loss is estimated at $1,500 The others, fronting on Seventh street, were ocenpied by John E. Baker, dry gocds dealer; M. Frabluk, clothier; S_ Brown, tobacconist; W Bayly, harness maker; K & Bro., liquor re- finers; ‘Tacker, shoemuker. On Maryland avenue the buildings were occu- pied by C. C. Anderson. blacksmith; J Corn- well, wheelw t; and J. B. Grinnell, pump- maker. ‘The individual losses, as far as heard from, are estimated to be as foliows: Purcell, $1,500; Baker, $100; Bayly, $200; Grinnell, $200; Corn- well, $20; Andeison, $75; Frabluk, £200; Kagy & Bro , $1,5u0. Mr. Purcell, we understand, was insured for #2,000 in the Farmers and Mechanics’ Insurance Co. of Philadelphia. Mr. Baker had his furni- tare and part of store insured in the Washington losarance Co. ‘The value of the buildings consumed has not been ascertained Mr. Hughes, floriculturist, lost about $50 by the destruction of his garden fence. None of our fire companies were present. A company was there who style themselves the Good-Will Hose. formed out of what was for- merly the States Hose. The conduct of sonie of these, on last evening, was in strict keeping with that of the States Hose. A gentleman tellx us that he saw one of the members issue froma burning building with two bottles of liquor in bis hand-. A member of the Auxiliary Guard attempted to stop him—a whisper is said to have artested the office:’s preceedings. ‘The Good- Will Hose then clustered a-ound their apparatus and were apparently having a most excellent fime. Subsequently Mr. Purcell was applied to by one of the “Good Will” for a farther supply, which they received.
