LOCAL INTELLIGENCE: Noricz to Apvagartszns.—To seoure the most conspicuous positions for advertisements in Ta Stam they must be sent to our office as early in the day as possible. Those who delay to observe this caution should not complain ff they do not find them where they prefer tonee them. It fs @lways safest to get them to our counter between 8 and 10 in the morning, if wishing them insert- ed satisfactorily on the same day. Catmutnat Court—Trial of John Essex for the murder of Owen Quigley —When our Teport closed yesterday, Mr. Ould was addressing the Jury on the part of the defence. He closed his remarks after a speech of one hour and a half, In which he.made a powerful effort to sustain the theory of the defence, that the prisoner strack ‘the deceased in self-defence, and under the be- iief of an impending attack from the deceased The jury then took a short recess, after which Mr. Bradley began the closing argument for the sdefence. He spoke nearly two hours to the jury, = over, with minuteness, all the facta which adduced in the trial of the case. Mr. Key then followed with his closing argu- meat, summing = the whole case with charae- teristic brevity and great legal power. He bad net concluded when the Court adjourned. To-day, the closing argument of the District Attorney was resumed Mr. Key occupied half an hour in concluding his argument, and closed’ with a most impassioned appeal to the jury in bebalf of outraged justice. The case was then given tothe jury, who re- tired to consult upon their verdict. The court then took up the case of Francis Penay, colored, charged with assault and bat- tery, with intent to kill, on Julia Bigley, white. Scrrene Covrr—Friday —George L. Davis, Feq., of New York, was admitted an attorney and counsellor of this court No. 113 John Holroyd, plaintiff in error, vs. Levi Pampbrey In error to the Circuit Court of the United States for the District of Columbia. ‘The matters in controversy in this cause having been agreed upon and settled between the parties it was, on motion of Mr H. Agkest oF Picxpocxets —This morning, two suspicious lookiug strangers were noticed by Mr Reyuolds, of the auxiliary guard. and Officcr Allen, at the sale at Green’s anction store. Capt Klopfer also noticed their suspicious appeara ce and conduct, and the officers beyan a strict watch of their movements. Ja a few moments a lady asked ‘‘ Who has my pecket book?”? The offi- cers made for the strangers, and a race bean which ended in the capture of both of thein They were taken before Justice Goddard and searebed, but the lady's pocket book cou!d not be found One of them, during the chase, threw a pocket book over a fence in an alley near Sev- enth and E streets, which was produced. They bed doubtless heen operating elsewhere, and bad accomplices who bave not been taken. ‘They gove their names as George Thomsen and —— Davis. Justice Goddard sent both to jail for trial at Court Birt TrRorsst acain.—Last night, a colored boy, belonging to Mr. William Goodin, of Va, came to this city with a lot of butter for sale at the Centre market. He was absent from his wagon about five minutes, and when he returned atub containing about twenty pounds of print butter was missing. He entered his ‘wagon, de- termining to watch, and in a few minutes a came and took out anotber tub; but the boy ed for help, and the fellow rau; he was arrested, however, and taken to the rd-house, where he proved to be the identical Bill Cropsey who has recently figured so extensively in market robberies, shop-lifting, &c. The tub was found with two prints left in it, and about ten pounds were recovered this morning. ‘The colored boy not being evidence, the larceny could not be shown; bat Bill was sent to the workhouse as a suspicious vagrant. Seppsx Dsatu or a Veteran —Every per- son, who knew him, will deeply regret to hear of the death, on yesterday evening, of the vete- Tan soldier and much respected gentleman,Jacob Hilbus, Exq. The deceased had started out from home apparently in bis usual health on profes- sional business; and, shortly afterward, was taken suddenly ill, and conveved to his home in acarriage. He lingered until 7 o'clock, p.m when he died The deceased was a native of Westphalia, Germany, but emigrated to this country when achiid. He bore arms in the late war between this country and Great Britain, and was for half a century a resident of this city. His age was upward of 71 years. Marxer Tuixves —The dealers in the Centre Market would do well now to make arra: ments te detect and punish the pilferers who usually loiter about their wagons and stands, in the spring of the year. The thieves are not ai- together of the juveuile sort. There are ape:er- ous old hands at the business who have served out terms ia prison for robbing the markets and ether places, who have returned to their old Pleces of operation, and are becoming familiar with the habits of dealers, and how they secure their goods at night. Some of them have at- temp/ed to operate recently; but they have been unable to succeed because of the vigilance of the Auxiliary Guards. But the guards cannot pay exclosive attention to them, and an arrangement cugbt to be made among the dealers themselves, for the security of their property. Dismisszn —Yesterday afternoon, the case of George Fasnaught, Lewis Deevers, Henry Hurly, Harrison Roby, charged with assault and battery and taking a watch from a colored man named Alfred Sturgis, on Monday night last, wascalled up for trial before Justice Dona. The complain- ant tried to prove that the affair occurred at a tav- ern kept by Mr. McChesney, in the Northern Liberties.
