The meeting then went into the election of can- didates for the Common Conncil; and during the counting of the votes Mr. J. G. Berret, the Dem- ocratic nominee for Mayor, addressed the meet- inz, saying that, having received the nomination for the highest office within the cift of the people of this oy representing the Anti-Know-Nething Democratic sentiment, it would be his proud am- bition to reflect that sentiment throughout the canvass; and if the nomination should be ratified at the ballot-box, be should take it as an earnest that throughout his administration he would be sustained by a sound public sentiment which would mark #n era in the affairs of the city, and lead toa result whieh weuld make the Federal metropolis a model in every sense of the word. He had not come there to make a speech, but to interchange friendly sentiments with the people. If elected to the mayoralty, he should execute the laws as he found them on the statute-books; for he held tht if aiaw could not be executed, it should be obliterated from the statute-books. Mr. Berret then retired, amid the cheers of thecrowd. Mr. Walter Lenox was then called out, and ad- dressed the people fora few minutes. He begged them, in selecting those who might represent them in the Councils of the city, to select those who would sustain the Mayor of their choice. He alluded to the nomination of Mr. Berret for Mavor, and stated that, although he entertained for the opposing candidate (Mr. Richard Wal- tach) the most friendly sentiments, yet he bad lived to little purpose if he conld not sacrifice those feelings when duty stared him in the face. Ou those grounds he endorsed the nomination of Mr_ Rerret cordially and fully. Capt Moore being called for, spoke brietly. He called upon the citizens to refrain in every respect from violence and those diegraceful scenes which have of late become prevalent at our elec- tious. To give their opponents no opportunity to engage with them in personal controversy, but to endeavor by every means in their power to maintain good will, good feeling, and kind rela- ions with all The count being taken on the nominations for the Council Board, it was found that Elijah Ra- monston Was renominated, and that Messrs.
